What causes people to denounce their own culture only to become obsessed with another, believe it's superior and try emulate it?

Ignorance, feeble-mindedness, lack of identity. Perhaps a clumsy parent that dropped them on the floor as a baby.

Imagine this: An ostracized outcast that is struggling during a turbulent part of their lives. They inevitably discover anime and become obsessed with it, and as is clear with obsessive people, they often want to reflect and promote their interest in some way. It becomes a part of their identity. They finally have something that resonates within them, even though their perspective is heavily distorted and delusional.

If you exclude the part where they reject their own culture and have a distorted view of the one that they admire, this isn't really exclusive to weebs alone, but it could be applied to a wide range of fandoms. Essentially it's just another form of obsession, and some people are susceptible to them for various reasons. I do think that it ultimately boils down to their lack of identity, and searching for a place to belong, but that's just how I see it.

More often than not, it's a subtle rebellion-- most get into this phase when they reach their teens.
Some adults are in this phase as well though, and I just don't have an answer for that.

It is as sometimes caused by virginity, why? Let me explain if you look up any "How japanese women view westernmen" it is fairly positive like how absolutely average guys in the western world end up with hot Japanese chicks so guys already into animu see this as an opportunity to lose their "male cherry" so they lose all their western customs to better understand japanese women through animu but in doing so they fail to shower, eat well, exercise and shave their neckbeards they use to keep at bay. When they arrive in Japan and try to meet the women so they can lose their man cherry they get rejected because of the things I listed above so they spiral into depression look at themselves in the mirror and say "My life needs to change" so they then begin collecting figurines. They love 3d girls don't get me wrong but in a 8-11 inch form made out of glass or plastic . The averagr life span is exactly 35 before they off themselves from debt because of the animu addiction I would go more into detail but I am getting bored.

Inferior genetics, we must purge the weeaboos in order to ensure a bright future for the human race.

That or some people just like to escape reality a bit and don't care if what they're doing is considered embarrassing. I think Moog has some good points too.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if it had something to do with how white people are seen in the public. Most weeaboos are just white people. Lately with the radical social justice movement, many people have started viewing being white as being racist. The best way to prove you're not racist, denounce your association with the "racist" group which is pretty ironic considering that Japan is one of the most xenophobic cultures in the world.

In general I notice that behavior stems from people who want to be something they're not. A lack of identity if you will. It's got less to do with culture and more to do with someone trying to pose as something that just isn't who they really are. I don't even believe in "acting one's own culture/race", it's just there's a difference between being passionate and then outright becoming an adoring fan. I used to listen to hardcore rap when I was in middle school and I never went down the wigger route. There was a major difference between loving the rhymes and wanting to be Mr. Thuglyfe from middle class suburbia.

They have the delusion than all their flaws will be accepted in Japan, because in anime even being a retard is seing as cute.
The irony is that japanese people, as far as I know, have little tolarance with social deviance.

But Weeabooism is racist in itself; believing that one culture (Japan) is superior to another (your own) is racist.

Also, weeaboos aren't just white. I can promise you that. Hel,, they can be Japanese-American, black, Latino, etc. I've seen them all.
"Lately with the radical social justice movement," nah, weeaboism is way older than this current movement.

Literally acting like an anime character IRL when you're not Japanese

Or going to Japan solely because of anime and not for language/culture/other things relevant

"Acting" fully a certain race, whether you are said race or not is a retarded idea to begin with, especially in individualistic nations. tl;dr, be yourself, and don't be fucking linear/dense.

This is an interesting view on this. I must say that many weeaboos actually are grounded in reality, but for many, it becomes a game of pretending to be Japanese or wishing to be Japanese.
I think, while this theory is thought-provoking, the others have to be accounted for as well.

Step 1)
be an insecure and shy nerd who spends most of their time alone

Step 2)
watch a tonne of anime (the main culprit) and play Japanese video games etc, activities you can do alone

if you are at peace with yourself, you can fit in anywhere in the world, and won't feel ostracized everywhere but in fiction
you would stop here, at 'otaku nerd' level weirdness
but, due to qualities aforementioned, the weeaboo does not

Step 3)
"learn" (wrongly) from anime that Japan is full of 'smart' but shy otaku nerds just like you, and cute girls are everywhere, believe it because it's convenient for you

Step 4)
decide that you're "spiritually Japanese" and it's the only place you'll ever feel at home

Step 5)
now you are a weeaboo, and you will obsess over doing the supposedly Japanese thing, and flaunt it to others
moving endlessly towards the unrealistic vision in your head

Yeah, the level of irony only increases when you look at it that way. Also, i just said weeaboos are white because of the origins of the word. Weeaboo is just a play on Wapanese which originally meant, white people who think they're Japanese
