You see Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2? Sometimes I just think, no wonder he's like that. People kept taking the piss out of him and he eventually just gave up on the world. That's how I feel sometimes. He wanted to do some good but people kept on ripping him off so he just said, fuck it and became a tyrant.

Andrew Ryan - Bioschock

Great character, charismatic and very well made.

Yagami Light - I really liked his actions and would probably do the same

Is it that odd? I relate to most villains more than protagonists. Protagonists are usually bland and naive.

Well I haven't played Borderlands: The Pre-sequal but in the trailers, his personality is different to his handsome jack personality. I think a lot of people betrayed him before the events of Borderlands 2. Anyway, he takes over a huge company called Hyprion and dominates a planet called Pandora.

Handsome Jack is irredeemably evil so no I can't sympathize with him in the slightest.

I can however sympathize with the antagonists in Katanagatari, at least so far, the current owners of the swords aren't necessarily bad people just somewhat victims of circumstance.

You mean Liquid Snake. It's so hard to keep up with the mgs story because so much stuff went on.

Jack just becomes a paycho, when Lilith marks his face and he does that evil laugh, you know Handsome Jack is born.

I usually to sympathise more with antagonists than protagonists, but it depends, and I think I tend to prefer anti-hero types.

No immediate villains come to mind though, except perhaps for Norman Bates.

Considering most anime writers feel the need to shove a sad backstory for the villain down my throat I guess. It's definitely something western animation does better in my opinion. While I sometimes want the villain to have a backstory I prefer western animation usually not giving them one compared to the overcompensation that occurs in anime.

I think the villains I tend to find the most interesting are the ones who have a strong personal relationship to the hero or the ones who really push the heroes to their limits.

Suigintou from Rozen Maiden series is a great example of the former. Her relationship with the heroine Shinku is rather complicated and adds a lot of emotional depth to their confrontations, especially after watching Rozen Maiden Ouverture, which elaborates on their history.

Pretty much all the main villains and many of the minor antagonists in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure fall in the latter category, which is largely why the fight scenes are so exciting. The heroes are really pushed to the limits of their physical strength and intelligence, and they only are able to win with a combination of sheer determination, balls of steel, and clever thinking. And because Hirohiko Araki is skilled at making the situations the villains put the heroes through seem impossible to escape, it ends up making the heroes' victories more satisfying.

Yagami Light at first. Then he went off the deep end in the second half and I couldn't relate to him anymore.
Kotomine Kirei is also someone that I can relate to, because he's just so pitifully human.

I've felt related to several anime villains. Although they have been more like antagonists than villains. Those who have an explanation and reason behind their actions.

Some of those are the antagonists from Re:␣Hamatora or Code:Breaker. And who wouldn't have felt related to one Light Yagami at first before he lost your good books?

I think every tales of I've played has a villain that has some sort of sympathetic background. Van would be the closest not to be. Lambda is the most awww

From anime, not sure. Probably
