In traditional Confucian societies, it was a little different, female virginity was a matter of duty (almost like a kind of bushido). Confucian cultures are all about structure and hierarchy, with the male head of household at the top. I have no idea how true that is now in modern Japan, but I know at least in Kurosawa's films it's still there. That article does a good job of explaining it better than I can. Interesting. | Yeah it indeed is emphasized a lot, but another thing concerns me. In tons of hentai, and sometimes even in regular anime, characters seem to be surprised when a 15-18 years old person is a virgin. Do teenagers really fuck that much in japan or is it just fiction? I'm 19 and virgin and shit, I don't think it's anything strange at all. |
