Even in characters that don't exhibit "purity" or "chaste" traits. Why is this almost always emphasized? "OH, SHE'S A VIRGIN, +1"

And then there was the controversy with Kannagi about how the heroine wasn't a virgin. Except it was never explicitly stated, butthurt fans just started assuming.

What's the deal with it?

I assume it is some kind of psychological trick. "She is a virgin because she is waiting for you," or something like that. I don't get why virgins are idolized either, gimmie a chick with some notches on her belt.

In traditional Confucian societies, it was a little different, female virginity was a matter of duty (almost like a kind of bushido). Confucian cultures are all about structure and hierarchy, with the male head of household at the top. I have no idea how true that is now in modern Japan, but I know at least in Kurosawa's films it's still there. That article does a good job of explaining it better than I can.

Interesting. Well, I guess my western perspective of things is incompatible I guess.

Because a female character having interacted intimately with another human in the past makes them feel like less of your property, and you won't feel like spending money on their figurines or breast mouse pads.

We have that as well here in the west(in some kind of degree) imo.

As someone said before me, rather a professional who knows what she does, even if I really doesn't care about that part of her really. It's her body, she can do whatever the hell she want with it. Even if she was my girlfriend it's not my business, she's not my slave for flucks sake.

Yeah it indeed is emphasized a lot, but another thing concerns me. In tons of hentai, and sometimes even in regular anime, characters seem to be surprised when a 15-18 years old person is a virgin. Do teenagers really fuck that much in japan or is it just fiction? I'm 19 and virgin and shit, I don't think it's anything strange at all.

Agree. And if people is surprised by someone being a virgin at some point of age, then they at least could voluntare themselves into unvirginize the virgin :D
Seriously, it shouldn't really matter.

Oh, and two movies that kind of is stupid and weirding me out: 40 Year Old Virgin and 18 Year Old Virgin. Does that mean that women should lose their virginity earlier than men? What about the thing when women is considered a slut as soon as she has slept with someone? That's just... what?!?

I think it's a cultural thing in Japan. I think the rest of the world has kind of moved past it, but Japan is kinda still holding on to this.

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself."

Japan is a male dominated culture and it gets reflected in their art, that's not just exclusive to anime. If you ever watch Kurosawa movies, this comes up as well. Here's a good article on that, if you're interested: http://www.popmatters.com/feature/131923-defining-the-most-beautiful/

Because they are pure and untouched, which are desired traits in a male dominated society.
It's also some kind of metaphor. A virgin is pure and untouched=the virgin is innocent, loyal and kind (most virgins in animes are portrayed as innocent young ladies, it's rare to see a character that is actually swearing like a sailor and killing everybody AND people emphasize that she is a virgin).

You know, even though it might be have been toned down a few notches in recent decades, it's still present within western culture and the general public's conscious. Madonna-Whore complex and all...

I think it has deeper, more universal roots than simply stemming from the Japanese's love for little girls...

The US is a patriarchal society and it's not valued outside of religion. It's just a marketing campaign that pollutes the entertainment industry in Japan that needs phasing out.

I have to disagree a bit there. Take Inahime for example - she never actually held power and was still told who she was going to marry. In the same period, Elizabeth I of England decided to never marry (killing off the Tudor line) and ruled England with near absolute power, while Inahime was renowned more for being a great wife and mother - not a political or military leader.

i said how is os protayed in fiction with ina

and no hime was kown as he power behind nobunanga

and also ina was trained by mher father ot be strong and are you going ot doubt her father was strong

and Japanese fear of ot much female powr comes from Chinese fears of the same cuase of wu jitein and how shes seen from history closer to her time

To have sex with whoever you want whenever you want, no. Some cultures have certain occasions when its okay to sleep around or to have sex with stranger, particularly travelers for instance. Professional whores might be afforded a little less disrespect in some places. America for instance. But that's about as good as it gets, really.

Anime is selling a fantasy. In most peoples' fantasy they want a girl that is pure and not a walking STD lab. Although I could be wrong on this theory.

That's actually pretty accurate. Otaku don't want a girl that has been tainted by other men, they want a pure virgin. Similar example is that Aya Hirano got a lot of hate when her fanbase found out she was having sex with people in her band.

Emphasized? I actually... have never seen it emphasized in anime.

I have seen it emphasized when it comes to real life idols, like Kpop and Jpop though. I know that in their contracts, they are not allowed to date anyone, or that they are not allowed to be around a male unless that male is a coworker or family member
