2015 Manga Reading Challenge - Discussion Thread! You may find the Sign Ups as well as more information about this challenge here! Discussion is not necessarily required for the challenge completion, but it will be encouraged! Users and potential participants will probably have different reading backgrounds, and we might even have people who take this as their starting point in manga reading (what can I say, I'm an idealist). Here, we can have a space where people can ask for recommendations or share lists of manga that can fit certain criteria, to help other users who don't know where to start or aren't sure what they may like. Any question about the challenge itself (i.e. criteria explanation, questions about graphics, donating graphics for prizes, other) should be asked in this thread and not the sign ups thread! To keep things neat and avoid spoilers, I recommend using spoiler tags in saying major plot points or when your post has become too long (i.e. longer than 3 big paragraphs). I also recommend using the quote option and @mentions to call the attention of specific users. |

I'm already reading a lot of manga currently, so does finishing manga that I've already started reading count towards the challenge or can only manga that I start reading after I've signed up count. Also, what if by reading one manga I complete multiple challenges? Should it only count for one? |

So here's what I plan to read (not much variety in terms of authors, but that's because of my additional no scanlation rule. When I pay for each manga I'm less inclined to take risks :>. And stuff I have already on my shelf, but not read yet, I also tried to incorporate (without forcing it though): ➤Read a one-shot (Something from A Drunken Dream and Other Stories) ➤Read a manga published before the 90s (MW) ➤Read a manga published after the 90s (Panorama Island) ➤Read an award-winning work (A Distant Neighbourhood) ➤Read a manga by your favorite author/artist (Sousakusha) ➤Re-read a manga (Record of Lodoss War: Lady Pharis) ➤Read a manga by Osamu Tezuka (Dororo) ➤Read a manga with a score of or below 7 in MyAnimeList (Becchin to Mandala) ➤Read a manga adapted from a different source (i.e. original anime/light novel/videogame) (Cowboy Bebop Graphic Novels) ➤Read a manga with a target demographic that does not apply to you (i.e. shoujo if you're a male in his 20s, etc) (Oooku) ➤Read a manga with a target demographic that can apply to you (i.e. josei if you're a female in her 20s, etc) (Ten no Taka) ➤Read a manga that has a main character of gender opposite to the demographic (i.e. female lead in a male demographic (Sensei wo Kaban) ➤Read a manga with a score of or above 8.5 in MyAnimeList (Dorehedoro) ➤Read a manga that starts with the same first letter as your username (Hare Yuku Sora) ➤Read a manga that someone on your friends' list rated a 10 (Subarashii Sekai) ➤Read a manga that you can relate to yourself (Billy Bat, I love comics) ➤Read a manga recommended to you by another Manga Reading Challenge participant (Olimpos or Shinanogawa) ➤Read a manga that has a main character that is a professional in his field (doctor, detective, embalmer, etc) (Trouble is my Business) ➤Read a manga that has a one word title (Adolf) ➤Read a manga that another user has read for this challenge(Buddha, read by Stark700) ➤Read a manga that focuses on non-romantic relationships (Nijigahara Holograph) ➤Read a manga about food (Gourmet) ➤Read a manga about war (Enemigo) ➤Read a slice of life OR comedy manga (Golden Boy) ➤Read a horror, sci-fi OR fantasy manga (Uzumaki) Feel free to recommend me something for that particular challenge, just keep in mind that it needs to be lincesed either in english or german or I can't use it :P. Of course I'd be happy to recommend you something as well so don't hesitate to ask! Also gonna keep my eyes open to see what you guys pick so I find something for that particular challenge as well. |

I've got one question. I know this is a manga reading challenge, but can manhwa count as well? And yeah, I know "read a manwha" is a specific goal but I'm wondering about the others. |

Well, some stuff I've seen and read that had a score less than 7: http://myanimelist.net/manga/29647/Kurokami_no_Helga http://myanimelist.net/manga/3588/Double_House http://myanimelist.net/manga/11995/%5Bzion%5D http://myanimelist.net/manga/40393/Soushokukei_Ism For anyone that wants to read these. I also recently read Conductor and I thought it was good. It's a murder mystery manga, and it's an adaptation of a light novel. |

Becchin to Mandala is also below 7 and if disgusting stuff and a lot of craziness doesn't bother you, it's a fairly entertaining read with a nice twist at the end. Very crazy though. And did I mention disgusting? |

Also on an unrelated note, you could check out something like Olimpos. It's licensed in English. I'm not sure if it's up your alley, but it has a philosophical thing going for it. Utahime and Elhanburg no Tenshi, also by Aki, are licensed too. Ranoom said: Hello guys and... do you guys know any debut manga's? or where to find them? :P Well, I suppose you could go to some manga artist's page and figure out what their first manga was from the dates listed. Mangaupdates is pretty helpful since the dates are listed right next to the titles. |

Heh, that's why I ain't bothering doing the "no scanlations" thing some other people are doing I guess if it's still airing manga you wouldn't need to read all of it, cause that'll be dumb if you're reading something like One Piece |

Actually I just found something the OP said in some other thread "As for the length of manga itself, I think it would be OK to count 1 volume as enough to check off an item if it's a long-running series, except for the item above with the asterisk or the one-shot." (found here) There is your answer....I think |

I'd still say you don't have to read only completed stuff, I'm planning to start Dorohedoro for one of the challenges and will see how far I get. It's definitely gonna be more than one volume though. For most other challenges I choose gekiga works of 1 or 2 volumes at most though, since that's what I read most of the time anyway, and it's affordable. It would be hard to do it without scanlations otherwise. |

Thanks for the recs, Elhanburg no Tenshi seems the most interesting among them (I'm weak towards Josei and medieval settings) but the english version goes on sale on March 24 (at least on my amazon) so I still have some time to think about it. Maybe I'll check out Olimpos while I'm at it, I like the synopsis a lot. |

Also, what if by reading one manga I complete multiple challenges? Should it only count for one? Since this is a 2015 challenge, anything that you started on or after January 1st counts, so if you started an ongoing manga then, you can finish it and include it (or include it if you have finished it!). If it's from before January 1st, it won't count though. One manga counts for just one item even if it fits more than one. TFO1013 said: I've got one question. I know this is a manga reading challenge, but can manhwa count as well? And yeah, I know "read a manwha" is a specific goal but I'm wondering about the others. If you would like a bigger challenge, I invite you to do it a second time with the items you missed and reading other manga in the categories that overlap with your first challenge. @kuuderes_shadow @JOJOAOAA Yes, as Higashi_no_Kaze says, that idea was scrapped due to the fact that 1 volume/book would make the challenge even less difficult for experienced readers, so people can choose only-1-tankobon items or they can choose longer manga at their own discretion. That said, you can read manga that are not finished, but you'd have to catch up to publishing/scanlation, You can also continue things you started reading after January 1st and still include them in your list. |

After going through the items I've chosen for the challenge, this is the line-up I'll probably go with: ➤Read a one-shot: Hanshin ➤Read a manga published before the 90s: Kami no Hidarite Akuma no Migite ➤Read an award-winning work: Kodomo no Omocha ➤Read a compilation by different authors: Japan as Viewed by 17 Creators ➤Read a manga by your favorite author/artist: Offered (Ikegami Ryoichi) ➤Read a manga by Osamu Tezuka: Ayako ➤Read a manga that is tagged with a genre you dislike: Seven Days (Shounen Ai) ➤Read a debut manga: Undecided yet ➤Read a manga that has been adapted to live action: Liar Game ➤Read a manga with a target demographic that does not apply to you (i.e. shoujo if you're a male in his 20s, etc): Anastasia Club (Shoujo) ➤Read a manga with a target demographic that can apply to you (i.e. josei if you're a female in her 20s, etc): Old Boy ➤Read a manga that has a main character of gender opposite to the demographic (i.e. female lead in a male demographic): Hito Hitori Futari ➤Read a manga that starts with the same first letter as your username: Ciguatera ➤Read a manga that someone on your friends' list rated a 10: Undecided yet ➤Read a manga that you can relate to yourself: Undecided yet ➤Read a manga recommended to you by another Manga Reading Challenge participant: Undecided yet ➤Read a manga that another user has read for this challenge: Undecided yet ➤Read a manga that has a main character that is a professional in his field (doctor, detective, embalmer, etc): Sabu to Ichi Torimono Hikae ➤Read a manga with children in it: Doubutsu no Kuni ➤Read a manga about food: Oishii Kankei (Considered Bambino first, but the sequel is far from being scanlated) ➤Read a manga about music: Full Moon wo Sagashite ➤Read a manga about war: Horobishi Kemonotachi no Umi ➤Read a manhwa: Annarasumanara ➤Read a slice of life OR comedy manga: National Quiz ➤Read a horror, sci-fi OR fantasy manga: 2001 Ya Monogatari I'm open to any recommendation for the categories that are missing, and I'd be glad to help if someone has trouble choosing. |

Personally I think the "relate to yourself" one is the hardest to get something for. All the others you can tell whether or not it counts before you start reading it, but that one you might have several failed attempts before you come across one that actually counts. If you're being honest, that is. |

Here we are ! You did some good work tsuyokunaru . I would be very pleased if some people could help me and suggest things to complete this list . - Higashi_no_Kaze : I see we have some common plannings , and I didn't even do that on purpose for MW and Dororo haha . I would be interested to have your impression on "Panorama Island" , "Nijigahara Holograph" and "Subarashii Sekai" after your read , if you don't mind (sad thing "Umibe no Onnanoko" and "Oyasumi Punpun" aren't at hand for you yet , but it will come sure enought I think ) . Since you like Gekiga , I hightly suggest you to read things from Kazuo Kamimura . It seems "Dousei Jidai" or "Kantou Heiya" are not translated in english or german , but "Lady snowblood"seems to have been , and "Furious Love" too (haven't read that one yet , but i'm pretty sure it's very good) . Really if you can , read some manga of him , it definitly worth it . If some people want advise for some item , I have those that come to mind right now : - read a sci-fi manga : "planetes" - manhwa : "My heart is beating" ( didn't liked it that much , but why not trying ?) - read a manga that has been adapted to live action : "Himizu" , "Helter Skelter" - Read a manga that focuses on non-romantic relationships and Read a manga with children in it : a lot of works from Taiyou Matsumoto do both = "Tekkon Kinkreet" , "Gogo monster" , "Ping Pong" . lkjhgf911 said: Well then...I'm all ears ^^ . Tell me what you think is the best (maybe something other than Uzumaki , for some reason I don't feel like reading that one) .If you guys need a good horror manga, I can recommend some. |

JOJOAOAA and Rothrock count for all 35 (in the former case because it doesn't seem as though he put any thought into what goes in which part of the list, and in the latter case because the list actually has all 35 things in it). Prototype and manhua are the least popular picks. The "relate to yourself" one and (surprisingly) webmanga were also picked by less than 50% of participants. On the other hand, "horror, sci-fi OR fantasy" has been picked by 29 of the first 30 participants. |

Maybe that will help someone. I'll try to sign up myself soon. |

Thanks. (no hentai please) I got this ones, if you're interested: Bonnouji is 3 volumes long, it's a sweet light comedy/romance from 2008-2012 and not on your list ;D. Aqua is 2 volumes long, It's the prequel to Aria, it's a relaxed enjoyable, episodic read, it's not really from the last 5 years (The Aria series spawned from 2001-2008), though it's a series good enough to the point that there's a new adaptation coming soon '3' http://myanimelist.net/manga/17348/Wa! (The BBcode's not workin on this one, I wonder why._.) Wa!,3 volumes long, is a comedy/romance(More comedy though), basically people like someone else till a "Circle" is formed, finished on 2011. |
