This episode didn't sit well with me for reasons I'll get into.
I thought Lucci tanked the third gear punch and was alright but if he landed in the water that would have been a one hit kill! I really like what this fight has turned into. A slow but incredibly strong giant Luffy versus Lucci who is using his speed in beast form, and his projectiles to make Luffy freeze up to abuse his speed over Luffy's slowness. It's created a super interesting dynamic to the fight. Last time I think I referred to Luffy blowing up his limbs like balloons but It's pretty clear even by the move name that he bites into his bone on his thumb and blows his bones full of air. That's brutal and it'd hurt a heck of a lot more than smacking someone with balloon limbs. Of course, it's ridiculous, but the only logical problem I'm stuck on is how he blew that much air with his mouth! Jeez, he's a giant!!! It also got me thinking, gear third doesn't seem to blood dope and thus it doesn't seem to overly exhaust Luffy. I wonder if chibi Luffy occurs when Luffy blows the air out of himself causing him to shrink! If so the only problem with this form is its lack of practicality and it's slowness. It'll be interesting to see him choose between fighting normally or choosing between gear 2 or gear 3 depending on the challenges he faces going forward.
Now since I've said my praise let's get into the part that bothers me. THE WORLD GOVERNMENT AND LUCCI ARE SO EDGY AND CORRUPT IT'S HARD TO EVEN BELIEVE! Seriously!? There's utilitarianism where you do as Spandam said, kill 1000 on the spot to save 10, 000 later. Or, even as they were doing framing Tom or attacking Iceberg, they were causing pain to save pain later by getting a weapon to stop others from using it against them. These are debatably morally reprehensible yes, but they make complete sense. Here we have Lucci as a 13-year-old kill 500 innocent soldiers because they were weak. There's stopping evil and pain in the name of justice and then there's cleansing the world of all of those who aren't ultra strong. This is something that I cannot even see as defendable. To be fair we've seen Lucci act on this behavior before, he was full of joy when he killed Nero for being a weakling, he seems to believe only the strong should fight and that would also express his respect for Luffy! And after that, we have a navy admiral shoot a man dead in cold blood because he questioned why they would kill 1000 of their men to possibly hurt a criminal who hasn't actually even killed one single person. I understand it was to create a message to the others to not hesitate or question justice, but it's so evil and uncalled for. Spandam said they would kill 1000 to save 10,000 but we've seen the government act and knowingly kill 500 for not a single life but instead kill people for being weak, and here kill a man for hesitating in cold blood and plan to kill 1000 of their own men not to save lives but to hurt a single guy who has actually done the government some favours.
HOW DOES A SYSTEM RUN LIKE THIS?!?!?! The hypocrisy and idiocy of their actions make me facepalm. It isn't even efficient. I think Spandam and Lucci and these admirals are great examples of the 1D evil-doers of the navy. We've had Smoker who challenged the corrupt system and the navy captain who was training Coby and Helmeppo and we had Aokiji save Robin's life and go against the navy, they're not all bad. But these guys are worse or on the same level as Crocodile, Eneru, and Arlong. I understand that is the point and I'm not saying this is a flaw necessarily, but I certainly prefer some more moral ambiguity rather than both extremes being pure evil.
I'm sure systems have functioned like this before. Things can be messed up. For now, this isn't a criticism, just a vent on my hatred for the navy in this freaking anime and some ways that I'd prefer it to be instead. However, I do understand the point of the world government at this point especially with the contrast of Spandam and Spandine being that they can do absolute opposite actions, fight for opposite causes, and both times say they were doing it for justice because to them, and I suppose to many authorities in the world "justice" is purely what they call fighting for their ulterior motives. It's a justifier for cruel acts, etc. If they were less corrupt this thematic message wouldn't come through as strong. One big strength of making such a horrible authority is that the disgust of how it's run makes you contemplate these things no matter what.
So, even though this was intended to be more negative, through writing this I started to really appreciate what they stand for as a horribly evil and corrupt authority as well as how it characterized Lucci on a level he wasn't before. Now Lucci's at least on an Arlong tier of a villain but he's not quite Crocodile tier for me yet. Good episode, I suppose frustration doesn't always equate to poor writing! |
