Is it? The more I think about the theory that Mari has dissociative identity disorder while I read this the more convinced I am. If they swapped bodies then I don't know why Mari would be checking out her own body.
Slaine did nothing wrong.

A lot of personal details of Isao has been manifested, which theres no way Mari could know unless they've spoken to each other. Theres a lot of things to happen yet, but as things have been going, its pretty safe to bet that they just swapped bodies.

Isao dosen't seem to even recognize her when she speaks to him either (could be that he's really surprise that she approached him the way she did).

I just found this on Crunchyroll on Friday and now I've read the whole thing twice - once on CR and once here.

Some random thoughts:

I much prefer this translation to the one on CR.

Chapter 28 is definitely one of my favourite chapters. I love the facial expressions! Isn't that Mari's homeroom teacher at the end?

I think Komori messed up when Momoko caught him talking to Yori in the toilets at the Karaoke. Ho ought to have told Momoko who he really is. I mean, things couldn't have gone any worse, right?

The problem is that Komori is so inept at social interaction. I feel sorry for him, really. He's not really a bad guy apart from being a bit of a coward.

There's no way that Mari is in Komori - if she was she would have tidied up his apartment, surely!

But if Mari is just believing that she is Komori then how come she knows so much about computer games? So I don't buy that either.

So I don't know what's going on! I wonder if this manga is going to end with the MC having to accept that he's stuck in Mari's body forever?

I would really like to know why Mari bought chocolate and a drink every evening at the same time at the same store. And what was she doing between leaving school and coming home?

The fact is even girls can have a messy home. Also, assuming she indeed bodyswapped with Isao, she would be quickly discovered if she tidied up the apartment, which is what she doesn't want to happen, at least for now.

Thats a positive point towards the bodyswap theory. Another point is that the boy loses to Mari on the fighting game. Not only that, Mari also knew he hadn't played it in a long time.
Theres a moment where Isao cries of joy, that could be Mari expressing deliberately her joy of being free of her strict life. When Isao (in Mari's body) talks about video games with her friends when they met the boy's group, you can notice that everybody gets surprised because Mari actually knows something about vidya, which supports again that Mari had a pretty strict life.

Its still early to conclude on that, but I think she wanted Isao to look at her on a daily basis. As for what she would between leaving school and coming home, we do know that she would stalk Isao at times (she even left a drawning praising his lifestyle) and eventually she would go buy yuri/ecchi/hentai manga.

Yes, but there's a difference between "messy" and a stinking apartment with festering bags of garbage everywhere, the remains of ready meals scattered over the table, a dirty floor, and FLIES! I mean, FLIES! Girls generally don't like bad smells or insects. And although we don't know much about Mari, we do know that she is a neat and tidy person.

If Isao really is Mari, pretending to be Isao, then she's doing a great job!

Or it could just be the normal reaction of a male hikikomori to playing a video game he loves with two cute high-school girls :-)

Except that Isao has apparantly never seen her before.

I think there has to be some third option, other than a straightforward body-swap, or dissociative identity disorder. I just don't know what though! I really hope it's not " . . . and it was all a dream".

Inside Mari reminds me a little of the BBC TV show Life on Mars / Ashes to Ashes (I'm English). That series started out brilliantly and I thought "How are they going to resolve this?". Then it got siller and sillier until I gave up on it. So I hope Oshimi Shuuzou has an explanation for what's going on! If it's a body swap, it has to involve magic, right? But we haven't seen any hint of that so far.

Still, this is one of the most enjoyable things I've read in a long time. It's going to be a long wait between chapters though :-(

I'm definitely going to read Shuuzou's other manga.

My point of view is shaped on what I've seen on Aku no Hana. I think the plot will go on the same flow his recently finished manga did. The mentality disorder is certainly the most interesting thing to happen on Mari, but I think that the author decided to go through the body swap idea because of this: to "mess" with the writer. The oposite is quite possible, or a third reason, but Mari knows too much about Isao, which kind of invalidates the mentality disorder.

"Except that Isao has apparantly never seen her before."

If anything, he never noticed her.

"I'm definitely going to read Shuuzou's other manga."

Go for Aku no Hana and ignore the anime.

How do you know that they are really Isao's personal details and not just things that Mari invented for her own Isao personality?

The video games I see thrown around a lot as proof for the body swap but it really doesn't prove anything. For all we know, Mari learned to play video games on her own. The fact that she's better than the real Isao at video games actually is evidence that she is not Isao. If there was a real Isao (a copy of the current Isao) inside Mari then you'd think their skill at video games would be equal. But she's actually better than him!

The only evidence that still remains for the body swap (or hijacking) are the two flashbacks Mari had of being Isao, and I hope the author eventually shows that they were just concocted memories.

Anyway, I think we should rule out a body swap because that would imply that Mari went into Isao's body, but we know that's clearly not the case. The closest to a paranormal thing that could have happened is that a copy of Isao that has no memories of Mari entered Mari. (IMO I don't believe that happened, as the disassociative identity disorder theory holds a lot more weight).

Mari is into video games, which takes everyone by surprise

Mari knows that Isao haven't played that fighting game in ages and beats him, the dude that spends the whole day playing vidya

Mari knows that Isao hides an extra key on his umbrella

If they never exchanged words before, how does she knows that much?

If you consider that both bodyswapped, all those facts makes sense, including having Mari beating Isao, because one knows how to play and the other doesn't.

"For all we know, Mari learned to play video games on her own"

Thats not shown in the manga.

At first I thought that the mentality disorder would be the most interesting outcome of this, but the facts are going in the other direction. As for your first question, thats what I got from reading the available episodes. In one of the chapters, theres a hint where we should expect insane things just like in Aku no Hana, so I'm just directing my mind towards this.

Or maybe she's just good at that game and better than him.

Mari knows that Isao hides an extra key on his umbrella

She knows that from stalking and observing him.

If they never exchanged words before, how does she knows that much?

Pretty obvious that she's broken into his apartment before.

If you consider that both bodyswapped, all those facts makes sense, including having Mari beating Isao, because one knows how to play and the other doesn't.

No the body swap makes no sense because that means that the original Mari is in the current Isao, and there is no reason for Mari-Isao to act as if she's Isao instead of having concerns about the body swap as well.

Thats not shown in the manga.

Not yet, you mean. And you are conveniently ignoring the MOUNTAINS of evidence for disassociative identity order.

At first I thought that the mentality disorder would be the most interesting outcome of this, but the facts are going in the other direction. There are NO facts going in the other direction. You are just taking the pages at face value when the author is actually throwing in hints towards the disorder outcome. Yes we ARE expecting insane things. The reveal that she has been Mari the entire time is supposed to be the big insane thing, us readers are just smarter than that. Expecting it to be a bodyswap the entire time is what the author wants you to think until the big reveal.

And you keep using Aku no Hana. I agree that Aku no Hana is the closest comparison. I also would like to remind you that Aku no Hana is 100% realism with no supernatural elements like bodyswapping.

"She's into a lot of things that take people by surprise"

Thats right, there's a chance that she actually knows a lot about video games

"Or maybe she's just good at that game and better than him."

Thats only valid if she actually knows about gaming, and this isn't revealed so far, instead, its expected the oposite for now. The author might hint this or that, but they aren't strongly developed to affirm that this is what's happening.

"She knows that from stalking and observing him."

Thats also possible.

"Pretty obvious that she's broken into his apartment before."

Again, only a possibility that is likely to have happened, but no citation at all that this happened, therefore not a reliable assumption.

"No the body swap makes no sense because that means that the original Mari is in the current Isao, and there is no reason for Mari-Isao to act as if she's Isao instead of having concerns about the body swap as well."

Actually there's a lot of reason. Being in Isao's body is an opportunity to live a life she couldn't, and even envied (just like she once wrote "I hope you never change" or the like)

"Not yet, you mean"

Yes, thats right, but since we're discussing from what we have, you can't use it as a fact. And for your acknowledgement, I'm not ignoring the evidence for the disassoctiative identity, I just know that this isn't developed ENOUGH to convince me. Yet you are neglecting body swap, maybe for your convenience? I don't really mind.

"I also would like to remind you that Aku no Hana is 100% realism with no supernatural elements like bodyswapping."

Aku no Hana and Inside Mari are both psychological drama. If you're saying that the latter contains supernatural elements then you're agreeing that bodyswapping is indeed happening, instead of being simply their conviction due to their own conscience, instead of a supernatural phenomenom.

I just read Shino-chan wa Jibun no Namae go Ienai (Shino-chan can't say her own name) this morning. It was sweet :-)

I'm a little hesitant about starting Aku no Hana, because I suspect I'm going to find it painful and addictive at the same time . . . I know I will read it though. Apart from anything else, I really like the way this author draws girls!

Yori really seems to enjoy video games.

Isao apparently always wanted a girl to play video games with, based on the tears of joy.
