I thought the Japanese one was bad IMO but how will this AMERICAN director do it? Will it be another Dragonball Evolution? You decide.

Death Note is a legend. To be tainted by Hollywood is an act of abomination.

Man anime movies are starting to become popular in Alfredland America.

Although I may also watch it for the lulz. Definitely will not go see it alone though.

The Japanese version was so shitty that an American version can't be worst.

Death Note actually have the potential to succeed in Hollywood, and not like Dragonball (since most of the stuff happened in speeches and it was mostly a psychological factor, the only problem is making the Shinigami though). But something tell me they are going to aim for the horror theme more than the intellectual battles that happens between Light & L. And L would undoubtedly look freaky (thus there couldn't be any perfect adaptations), and if he didn't, fanboys/girls will whine like fug. I'm putting my hopes up, but something tells me these directors are too obnoxious to listen for advice, especially from the actual writer.

...Now I'm really anticipating what L may look like. :U

Please do this, oh Hollywood, even if it's just for my own amusement.

American adaption of a foreign series, that's basically guarunteed to fail. Not to mention the Japanese live action Death Note movies sucked, so a hollywood version is likely to fail even more.

Balls.
This is getting ridiculous.

But yes, I assume a DN adaption would be slightly harder to screw up compared to the DB one. But Hooliganwood are experts on the field, so I guess they'll manage to do it either way.

I believe that was a rumor started by a blogger who noticed Zefron wearing a Light-esque outfit.

Eh, Death Note actually did pretty well in my country. It even got my friends who aren't even anime-oriented to talk about it.

As for the US version.....torrents will have to do.

Death Note, Shusuke Kaneko's adaptation of the popular manga, has become a cult hit and spawned a sequel Death Note: The Last Name.

A CULT hit??????????? WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!

Er, a cult hit means that it's not mainstream but has an obsessive (and usually pretty small) fanbase.

But still wtf because Death Note is pretty freakin' mainstream.

ANN says:
The production notes for the recent horror films Shutter and The Strangers both reveal that America's Vertigo Entertainment is developing a remake of the Death Note franchise and has hired Vlas and Charles Parlapanides to write the screenplay.
....
Vertigo Entertainment (no relation to DC Comics' Vertigo imprint or the United Kingdom's Vertigo Films) has developed or is developing remakes of Ju-on (The Grudge), Dark Water, Infernal Affairs (The Departed), Gin gwai (The Eye), Shutter, My Sassy Girl, Jungdok (Possession), and Janghwa, Hongryeon (The Uninvited).

Need to know more to figure out how bad it's just going to be?

and who or what the hell is Parlapanides??

Signature? I ain't got no signature! I don't need no signature! I don't have to show you any stinkin' signature!

I'd hit it.

Actually, unlike Dragon Ball I'll be amazed if they fuck this up. I'll actually probably go see it too, I have hopes. Of course, as stated many, many times; Hollywood has a way of fucking these things up. It's bound to be better than FMP! as well. Though, I am as well weirded out by the fact Death Note is considered a cult hit...

Oh well, IB4 Geass Movie. Said that on the DB thread, and I'll say it here. It's bound to happen, and with Sean Connery as Charles. A man can dream, right?

Meh, it was bound to happen. Most of the anime that's well known in the states is slated for an adaptation, although whether or not they'll actually be released is a different story. I honestly wouldn't mind if Efron played Light, as long as he didn't sing it. But then again, DN the Musical would be pretty damned awesome...

US version, though not necessarily being any good, will most likely still kick the shit out of the laughably awful Japanese version.

Honestly, some of you are just defending anything Japanese for the hell of it. Wait, what was the word for that again...?

Could just be in the form of black smoke or something. Or based on various depictions of death gods from various cultures, to give it a more multicultural aspect.

But some of the ones from the original did look quite nice, although Ryuk did look a bit silly.
