So with winter 2014 and recent anime the highschool setting is probably the most used setting in anime today.

While I personally don't mind it I still think it is overused and annoying right now.
I mean is it so hard to make an interesting setting?

Last year (2013) there were only a few interesting shows which had no school settings, like:

Shingeki no Kyojin (obviously)
Log Horizon
Maou Yuusha

And actually not much more (at least nothing I thought was good)
I mean there is Coppelion (but it sucks), Galilei Donna (sucks even more), Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi (which actually had an interesting setting but was overall meh) and maybe Monogatari, but it still had school elements in it...

It's just that the writers of all these anime seem to be very lazy and just regurgitating the same shit over and over again.

Just look at KyoAni who basically can't do a single show which is not a fucking school setting, I mean where are the shows that play in a real world, not just the secluded school world of japan?

I wish there were more shows that have great world building with an interesting setting to explore, and not just lazy RomCom school anime we see every season over and over again...

While I don't mind school anime as I said before, it just becomes so boring after a while.

How do you feel about this? What do you like? What are settings you enjoyed a lot?

There seriously needs to be more anime that isn't focused around kids/school, it's just the same events and theme every time, gets really old.
I'll bear with it, but at least they could make it about teachers or college students for a change

Depends on the anime genre, if it's romance or slice of life anime i prefer it to be in a school. But if we are over at the fantasy/fighting/shounen genres i prefer it not to be in any kind of school settings.

I too feel that the whole "school setting" is getting over played.

It has gotten to the point if high school is mentioned in the synopsis i usually skip it, which i shouldn't (Because it could actually be good, like sket dance).

But I prefer the whole discovery and journey feel, I prefer plots and settings that take me away from reality.

I haven't seen enough anime set in school for it to annoy me, but I agree that I would much prefer a different setting. A big part of what makes anime such an appealing medium to me compared to live action is how imaginative some of these shows are capable of being. There's the potential to have some really fantastical and creative settings and stories in anime, and I would like for more studios to try and leverage that if they can.

Would Railgun count as school setting?

While they are middleschoolers it actually was not really in school ever. So that would be another great show of the year which did not play in school.

While some shows were good which had a school setting, I just find "normal boy/gilr highschool until mysterious girl/boy appears" plots really fucking overdone.

At least spice the setting up with something like Code Geass did.

The setting isn't too important to me.
As long as the show is good I don't really care too much about the setting.

I am also quite sick of school settings, but at the same I dont mind it too much. How should I put it, in comedies I guess I dont care too much, but I hate it when they have to shove it into every kind of anime. But I cant say of any instance where I actually was glad it was a school setting, not a single one. So the highest level of appreciation the school setting gets from me is accepting it and not minding.

I dont mind school settings. Along side work, or higher levels of education, its the simplest way to constantly bring the same characters together day in and day out.

For slice of life shows, at least, and generally for normal world romance shows something like it is needed or at least immensely helpful.

School settings can sometimes be nice, as it provides slice of life elements to shows that otherwise would not have them (Code Geass).

Dat hate on Coppelion and Galilei Donna :( I really don't care anymore. Looking at my list it appears I do actually prefer non-school settings but I feel like I haven't seen enough to grow a dislike for it. Also I see plenty of opportunity to keep the school setting interesting and fresh. Silver Spoon did a perfect job of that. And since I'm actively looking for lazy romcom school romances you won't hear me complain.

What this? People with the same opinion as me. I got really sick of school setting right after Toradora.(show sucks)

I have watched a lot of out of school anime since then but I still am tired of school setting.

Typical school anime
-Excessive panty shoots
-Nerdy, weak, antisocially awkward MC
-Tsundere character that likes MC
-New transfer student gets seat by MC
-Surrounding useless background characters get jealous

Thats just a bullshit argument.

Its not like we are talking about hate, we are talking about being tired of something.
And the school setting is just one aspect. If I removed every anime with school settings its not like automatically all the other ones are what I want. All the other various aspects like story, soundtrack art, characters everything else has to fit perfectly. If I start excluding everything like that I might as well stop watching anime, cause there would hardly be any left.

So saying just watch other kind of anime doesnt work. The school setting is simply overused and cliche, I dont see why we shouldnt be able to complain about it. People complain about a cliche hero or villains in anime which might be really good except for that one point. So why shouldnt we be allowed to complain about the school setting being overused?

As an example I would say take Nagi No Asukara. The world is fantastic, a world where some people live in the sea, its really mysterious and really interesting, and the bam they slapped a middle-school setting on it, a love triangle or rectangle or net or whatever the fuck cause I cant see trough it anyway.

Instead of focusing on the relation between the humans and the people of the sea, toching themes like "racism", and showcasing the supernatural and mystery part of the anime, they just briefly mention theese things and instead focus on fucking teenage love drama.

Thats one of the anime that could have been excellent and were just dragged down to a mere average because of the school setting and kids romance.
Many people think the setting is not important but its actually one of the most important thing, at least to anime that have a story at all.

I don't mind them if they're in the background (like the cast still goes to school but it isn't the central setting), and the plot doesn't revolve around it. A school setting isn't a huge deal breaker for me.

They don't really bug me unless I watch one after another with no variety.

Actually just realized today that a lot of what I've seen has a school setting. I don't even take it into consideration or think it impacts on how good an anime is compared those that don't take place in a school setting. If the plot is good and they manage to express whatever themes they wanted to well then I'm a happy viewer.

Besides if the creators use a school setting(or any setting for that matter)..its safe to say they're more comfortable and inclined to handle its events better? Variety couldn't hurt though.

Hataraku Maou Sama didn't have a main school setting. I get the argument, but right now, as long as the other elements aren't cliche and in a genre I like, I don't mind it. That's probably because I haven't watched enough to be sick of it in comparison to what's out.
