From what I've seen around the anime community there is a lot of hate toward shows that are much longer than the rest. I say if a writter has tons of ideas to add more into his/her story, why not? Maybe they're doing it for publicity, but there are also a handful of artists who..well..planned for their stories to be long from the begging with an ending already in mind. I like stories that are universes rich with lore and tons of characters that each individual played a certain role shaping the history of their world, for example: one piece.

How about you?

i prefer it to be longer, the style has to suit though. I wouldn't have wanted death note to be long running.

I like them the way I like my...
well lets just say..
short or long doesnt matter..
as long as they have a good start, and gets more intense with each episode, and with consitency - but with a few surprises here and there, and have a really epic finish
sexual incest in nisomonogatari - no one bats an eye
romance incest in SAO - everyone loses their minds

Most of my favourite animes are long. (If you guys consider 22 episodes or more long..) So if an anime is interesting, it's good if it's long.

For me ideally 24 episodes is solid, I don't like it when they drag.

It depends. Some stories are suited for 24-26 episodes and tidy up nicely. Others need to be longer and more expansive to tell the story the writers are trying to tell.

Then there are those that are needlessly expanded just to gain viewership; these usually have a large drop in quality and become stale.

For example, Baccano is a great tale that manages to close up most plot threads in a 13 episode timeframe. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, on the other hand, is an epic tale and needs the full 64 episodes it was given.

It just depends on the nature of the story.
The problem with the world is that it's always one drink behind.

I prefer them interesting and coherent. I like longer series. One reason is that 12/24 episode series usually have horrible pacing and get boring really fast with how predictable development can get. The other is that longer series can make you feel attached to characters or world in the show. And tell you much more and in more details of course. Series with unusual number of episodes (either below 12 or above 26) make me automatically interested as they are probably trying to tell some story, not just whip out a show for current season.

13-26 episodes preferably, sometimes maybe 52 but only a handful of shows can pull of anything above that.

It depends. My favorites are probably the longer shows, hundreds of episodes, though I enjoy shorter ones a lot and have favorites in both. My favorite anime and one I rated a 10, One Piece has 600 episodes and isn't going to be stopping for another 400 or 500 episodes and I love that. While another 10 and one of my favorites, Tsumiki no Ie has 1 episode of 12 minutes. And I believe it fits that timeframe perfectly, I wouldn't want it longer.
So it basically depends on the type of story to which I like it more but I usually prefer longer anime, gives you a more epic and attached feeling when you finish it.

It's not about whether they're long or short, but rather if they're engaging, written skillfully, and conclude with as few possible plot holes and loose ends.

Depends on the story. For example, Death note probably could have done without the whole Near and Mello arc but something like One Piece could not have been a short series.

I just go with the flow, for me there is nothing better then finishing a season (or series) and wanting more.
If a story can pull me in to such an extent that i dont want it to end then thats just perfect for me, sadly this does not happen often.

One question about one piece, does it even have a good storyline after so many episodes or is it just like that other anime and full of filler episodes?
I only watched a few episodes from the first season, the shitty dub and censorship absolutely killed one piece for me.

Yeah the storyline is supposed to be long and over the course of the series. While there are arcs with their own stories, they all kind of connect to the main story.

That is quite precise.

I would say 24 episode is neither too short nor too long. But then again, if the series is good I will always ask for more, be it 12, 24 or 64 episodes.

Long if there are side-quests, off stories about characters in the main group or maybe a story within a story. but I don't like things that are dragged on.

I don't really care one way or the other, but I've noticed longer shows tend to get stale after a while, a great example is Rurouni Kenshin there are 94 episodes, but only like the first 60 or so are good.

Around 50 episodes is my preferred length. Enough time to develop the characters, build up a strong plot and have a little bit of fun on the side without going overboard. Fullmetal Alchemist, Eureka Seven and a lot of magical girl anime come to mind. Althought the latter tends to spend a little too much time on the 'fun' for my liking.

Of course, plot comes first, but I find that most of the best stuff that I find around tends to usually be pretty short...
Movie formats just seem to usually give the entire series a more polished feel to them, while short series have to cram more stuff into each episode, giving less space for useless exposition episodes and a more strict attention to the flow of the story.

Also, there are few things that I find as immersion breaking as looking a bit to the right of the site I'm viewing a series on and realizing that I'll only have to view 80 more episodes to see how the story ends.
It often ruins great series by just making them look like chores...

I find long-runners to be only good if they're still coming out and I am consistently following them, making my favorite series length of about 12-16 episodes.
If there's a 2nd season, great, but I honestly prefer my stories to be contained within certain limits, so that it doesn't get derailed too often...

Sometimes, a good limit is what a story needs... Nobody really gets as invested in a story that doesn't seem to end as much as one that has a clear idea of where it starts, how it progresses and how it's going to end without too many needless additions... :/

I have a really short attention span, so I always hesitate to start any anime with more than 24ish episodes. However, I have greatly enjoyed the only three series I've seen that are longer than that (those being Cardcaptor Sakura, Utena and Soul Eater.)

On the other hand, two of my other favourites have only twelve episodes each and I'm satisfied with that, I don't feel as if having any more would be a good thing. I've found that most two-cour shows either drag or rush, quite often both at different points in the series (Steins;Gate comes to mind...)

TL;DR: My preferred length is either twelve episodes or more than 24, but any length in between is acceptable presuming it's well paced and doesn't have plot holes.

26 episodes and below is always nice. If you want to expand the series any further, just split it into 2-3 seasons like Shakugan no Shana, Bakuman, and many other anime did.

I usually prefer 13-26 episodes as well but of those anime deserve to be longer because it felt rushed, Angel Beats for example, could have been much better if it was 2X episodes long.

If it can tell decent stories without becoming overly repetitive or boring, than it doesn't really matter. Though since I'm very reluctant to start a long anime like Bleach with over 500 episodes, I'll say short.
