Personally I don't mind having overpowered protagonists initially, because it only makes their fall from grace that much more devastating. It's also nice to have a character who is able to show the upper hand early on in itself rather than typical struggle after struggle, but again, a weak protagonist and an overpowered one should be used sparingly I guess, or else it becomes TOO predictable and monotonous.
To draw up a comparison from this season, there's Hyobu Kyosuke from Unlimited and Izayoi from Mondai-ji, the former is fairly overpowered to begin with and has a myriad of abilities at his disposal, but when he feels his normal state is unable to deal with the problem, he uses his Unlimited Mode to amplify his powers at the cost of his life gradually shortening and his stamina decreasing. By the time episode 9 comes around, he actually gets overwhelmed and has to recover, it was shocking seeing the dark messiah losing his touch, but it was interesting nonetheless. As for Izayoi, while he may be overpowered too much, it bothers me that the other cast members' strength hardly meant anything. Asuka's ability to control things worked on crows, a little boy and then a mecha which she uses in the final battle of the anime; when she had received a sword in one of the episodes, she barely used it ever again and then this weird water tree or something (can't recall). It may be due to the short episode count, but Asuka's abilities were still severely underwhelming. Yo also didn't do too much, but she had adequate combat skills and gets a bit of exposure later on, but hardly much. Yes Izayoi is pretty much a Deus-Ex for everything with his god-tier fists, so he should've been greatly downgraded, but the other 2 were nigh-useless. I still think Izayoi was KIND OF different, he's got the brawn and he's clever (go figure) but still 2-dimensional nonetheless and I wish the show actually gave some more depth rather than basic personality traits to its characters. In a nutshell, I don't mind overpowered characters provided they do have a fall-out at some point.
My apologies for going on a stupid tangent, just figured my views might've been a little different I guess; I think Touma is an alright character from what I've seen and he does seem to have hardships from time to time, but I guess I'm curious if people are holding that against the series (still seems better than Mikoto and Railgun...urgh). And nothing against you Aizo in case my prose seemed condescending, (just making sure) I was curious and wanted to share my views on the whole 'OP MC' thing. |
