Can't believe it ended.
The story was just great, I really liked Light and L. The ending is too sad, but that's what makes Death Note so good.

This show started off so great, but then I started to loose the interest due to several jibberish-scenes as the episodes went on.
Sad that L died, but had it coming, rather obvious.
As for the ending episodes, mainly 37 ofc, must have been the most dissapointing(or whatever) in the entire series.
As the every "encounter" up to this point were well planned in every way, the revealing of Kira is just bullshit. No phsycologica babble, no smart ass comments, nothing.
Anyway, enough bein' a pessimist. What exactly happened to Misa? did she go high up into a tower,go to the edge just to mourn? If so, how could she know what was happening, would really love some explanation on that one.
weak 8/10 for the show.

You simply don't understand it. And the fact that you're hating because your fav character died proves it.

It's true that episode 1-25 were made of amazing writing in my opinion, but I will always score Death Note as a 10. The animation, although simple because of the lack of action scenes, is still superb because it drew my attention. The music was phenomenal throughout the entire series.
I did not want Light to win because he killed L and I wanted L to be avenged, also, Light watched his father die being lied to all this time and he could give a crap. I have to say though that I absolutely loved Light's break down because of his epic laugh. It made me almost pity him.

The ending was pretty much perfect.
I can't really comment on it, since there is nothing that could be improved. The only thing I'm sad about is that it's been getting better and better, and now it's over....

There is a one-shot manga set after the anime.

Edit: Whoa, 50% didn't vote 5/5. O.O
Bummer.

oh what a great ending!! with that being said here are my thoughts on the anime altogether...

1) animation= average nothing that drew y attention or annoyed me

2)character development +3 i loved how after L died light wasnt as smart as he used to be because he thought he didnt have any competition(poor sucker)

3) OP+ED +2 especially this last OP

4) here's some points i have to give thats new for even me its MOE POINTS!!! somehow in this anime i managed to fall in love with every character the weird ones that i would never fall in love with like L and the crazy one aka light(not much tho) even the annoying ones aka misa and matsuba so +5

overall 10/10

well its better than the ending from the manga because I dont like Light goess like "owhhh pleasee savee me ryukk" and shitt the anime version is better atleast he ran away without begging on Ryuk to help him and theres a bonus when he saw L at the moment of his death and Ryuk at the top of some kind of building writing Light's name in a cool manner~ mehhh the drama was great but sad case I hate to see Light lose eventhough its just an anime D;

Dunno bout you guys but I found the anime ending more suspenseful and even sadder than the manga. In the anime I surprisingly felt sympathy for Light, while the manga I was like "HAHA BITCH TAAAKE THAT WEWTTT ^#$@&$^!"

I think that the journey of watching Death Note has been reminiscent to that of watching Arrietty or reading The Hunger Games. I'm hooked in at the beginning, the plot and characters, the concept all draw me in. An overwhelming curiosity numbs my brain while I sit there in awe at this work, wondering how such an amazing experience is humanly possible...! The action, plot twists, character development all continue to keep my eyes on the screen, drawing laughs and mutterings and screams of rage. I laughed darkly at Naomi Misora's death and puzzled aloud over where she could've so expertly hidden her body. At L's death, emotions washed over me: shock, rage, a hint of amusement, depression, so on. I went so far as to throw an object across the room. Indeed, Death Note kept me engaged throughout the entirety of its first 25 episodes.

Then they changed their game up. Mello and Near marched in with their own motives, their own stories and approach. This shift of five years threw me off-balance, but I wasn't displeased. Unfortunately, I didn't have much time to enjoy some of the newer characters; Mello sounded particularly interesting, though I'm not sure why. Perhaps his addiction to chocolate...? In any case, I did have a good time with the last few episodes even if some things didn't make sense! But then came the last episode. I clicked the link and I was already anxious, palms and feet sweaty, eyes restless. I had to reload the page 5 times, and I didn't take it as a good omen.

Now I don't want to drag this out, because most of you have probably seen the episode already. Let me just say that the last fifteen minutes had me in fits of giggles every few seconds to the point where my mom had to threaten me with confiscation of my laptop if I didn't quiet down. So here's where Arrietty and the Hunger Games come in: the ending. Oh sweet Lawliet (yes, I did just say that), that ending. Was it remarkable, memorable, shocking? Of course it was! But not in a good way. More like, "I spent over fifteen hours of my life to be confronted with an ending like this?" I hate those endings that don't give a fricking hint as to what happened afterward. Hey, storyboard artists and Suzanne Colllins, I have a word of the day for you! AFTERMATH. I want it, and I'm sure several hundred other people do as well. MAKE IT HAPPEN. Okay, so Light dies. Mikami dies. I get it. What happened then? When the world eventually found out that their beloved savior Kira has died, what happens? What becomes of Light's family? What about Near? Come on!

In conclusion, Death Note is an anime that, in my opinion, is more about the journey than the destination. Enjoy those 36 episodes in between with all their plot twists, action, revelations and such because that's what you want to remember. Not the ending, because the destination (trust me) is a pretty terrible place.

(TL;DR, the series was great, but the end of the last episode tore my heart into several pieces and duct-taped it back together totally wrong. Seriously, I've got aortas connecting to veins over here, my left atrium is all up in my right ventricle's business... Did the ending mess me up, or did my name get written in a Death Note?!)

Finished Death Note. What to say? This was one of the most interesting animes I've ever watched. Basically, it seems to me like one big, completely screwed, dynamic game of chess with players being Light and L (later Near and Mello), where figures are constantly moving (several of them simultaniously), changing colors, dissappearing, reappearing, spawning, breaking rules and whatnot. There wasn't a single part that wasn't interesting, and with amount of plot twists left me constantly guessing what could happen next. Unavoidably, it costed me several hours of sleep XD

Now, to answer question: Light or L? Both are great characters, but I'm leaning more towards Light here. He seems better developed and his motives and objectives are far more interesting than L's "capture the Kira". Not to mention that Light started "the game" with basically nothing but Death Note while L had the whole police and technology at his disposal. Also, his 3-month plan of relinquishing ownership and imprisoning himself, losing his memories, sealed the deal, especially when he got hold of his Death Note again and got rid of L later.

Now, to touch a little on its flaws... The ending left me with bitter taste in my mouth. Maybe I sound too biased, but in first 24-28 episodes I really cannot find anything. It becomes problematic near the end of serie when Light appearantly becoming dumber (no, I can't call that "underestimating Near" since Near wasn't skilled as L yet - and N says that himself) than in his battle with L and Near pulling some moves which were borderline with pure luck. OK, I'm lying, Light vs Near was similar battle as Light vs L, and it was very interesting. It's just...

Yeah. The last episode. I would accept ending if it was done better, but this was ridiculous. Yeah, I knew immediately when Mello and Near appeared that Light is going to lose but... some moves explained in last episode are so close to being Deus Ex Machina intentionally set up to stage Light's downfall. Mainly, double fake note (copying fake Death Note completely precise in one day) and Mikami's (out of place) panic. Mikami doesn't seem like the type that will panic when something unexpected happen - proof are his actions from the time he got Death Note to the momene he managed to get in touch with Light. Given his personality and intelect one would expect that he'll approach the problem calmly and observe possible solutions, having in mind that he's constantly watched. Also, as Shapow says, there is no "aftermath" to show even slighly what happened later.

To conclude this and not drag anymore, 10/10.

felt light was really like me. We have the same principles.
Damn, wish he'd won. But I kinda knew this was coming; the story couldn't have probably ended with a serial killer on the loose. so yeah. a stereotypical end.

The drama at the ending got me to tears though unlike some people here finding it funny.

OK , I'm very frustrated that I have to write all that I think . There could be an ending worse than this to an anime for it to be the ending for the breath-taking "Death Note"
I mean come on ! This can't be it ! Though the author should know best Light would never act this way . He's too calm to go crazy . Well he wasn't just crazy but also stupid ( that was the case in the last episodes ) and as to why I think it's odd and contradictory , well let's see :
- The first time we saw Light act rash was when he killed Lind.L.Tailor and we can't call that being rash since obviously there's noway anyone would discover Kira's identity because of that and because he wasn't sure what he was dealing with but from there on he became very careful .
- and just because L died light wouldn't drop his guard down especially since he knows N is L's successor and was also trained to be and that he's good enough to have figured out that L2 was under suspicion without knowing all the facts L knew . Therefor he shouldn't have expected this to be a piece of cake like they made him do (what a shame) .
- He would at least have a backup plan and what pisses me off the most is that he was telling himself that if N was good enough he'd suspect the possibility of a fake note book , well how on earth did he know for sure that N didn't think that way ???
- Further more the Light that we knew through the show would never say he won out loud before it actually happens even if by seconds . What better proof than the way he celebrated his victory over L "in silence" and even when L had the heart attack he waited a while before having the victorious expression and even then he made sure to erase everything related to the case that L made "the L report" for him to announce it so carelessly with so many policemen around .
- Also, Light was put in very challenging situations and still manage to remain calm and think rationally ,ex: when Ray's fiancee was going back to HQ Light knew it would all be over if she told them her conclusions but he still refused the eye deal and decided to depend on his intellectual abilities to solve the problem which he did , also when L confronted him telling him who he was he suppressed his feelings until he got home , the same thing goes for when they arrested Misa and he thought up a great plan after almost admitting defeat .
- In the second part of the show Light changed drastically and instead of becoming more composed he became unreliable and as much as I hate to say it stupid in some occasions , I mean even N said that about how he handled the kidnapping and let's not forget how he handled Izawa and the other cop who suspected him ,plus he totally went against what he said was one of his principles by playing Kiyomi to gain information about Kira sth he refused to do with Misa when L asked him to so why didn't he consider that his team might find it suspicious since they were present that day and why didn't they find it suspicious they're not that stupid ! And how come the fact that Light's father confirming to them that he wasn't an owner of the death note was ignored (well it was mentioned once but Light didn't take it to his advantage quite well) .
-Mikami who's supposed to be so smart would actually do sth he wasn't told so carelessly even though he knows he's under surveillance ?
-What about Melow , he suddenly had a change of heart and decide to join N after being so determined on getting to Kira first and was ready to die knowing N would survive ? beside why didn't Light kill Melow in the first place ? It's not like he was that concerned about N suspecting him more than he already did , he could just say that Kira must have known his identity or sth .
- It looks like so many things were overlooked to get to the point where Light loses . For Light to lose is acceptable but for him to lose this way is not . They shouldn't have made him that intelligent if they wanted to take him down like that .
Anyway , the only things I found good about the finale are : when Light was running remembering the beginning , Ryuk's words , how Light saw L before he died just like when L saw him .
All in all it is too unfortunate what used to be a flawless anime took a turn for the worse . It makes me angry and sad but it's definitely not a waste of time to watch DN because it's full of action , suspense & twists which were all present in the second half but with more flaws . If only the ending was better everything else would have been forgivable or maybe I'm exaggerating because I was expecting an ending that would blow my mind and didn't get it . I still believe this is one of the must-see anime regardless . I'm sure it'll be on my list of favorites once I've gotten over the ending .

Honestly, I gave this a 10 and then took it away. 9/10 for me. I really enjoyed the ride. And with how easily I give out 10s, I really thought this would be a no-brainer. However, as Shapow said, this anime is more about the journey than the destination. I loved the ending, but I just wish we could have seen more.

What happened to the world? I don't give a fuck about Light, he's dead now. He got what he deserved, but what about all the poor people who were living in fear? Does everything come together? Every episode was so focused on the intellectual battles that each time someone died, it was more of a shock than an "oh my god this is so terrible" moment. Was I sad at any point during this anime? Not really. Except when Misa died. I love that girl.

And what happened to Light's family? It's been like 10 episodes or something since Sayu-chan got kidnapped and rescued. Not a single reaction from the mom and Sayu? She was in a wheelchair! What's up with that? I guess we'll never know. The only deaths that really had an emotional impact on me were those of Ray Penber and even more so, Misora Naomi. But that's only because so many episodes were devoted to those two and we had a great understanding of them. And when Light finally tricked Naomi and made her commit suicide, it was heart-wrenching. That was the highlight of the anime in my opinion.

Light's death comes in second for me. We all knew it was coming, I mean, after episode 36, I was like, "well, it's Death Note. Every single fucking time, the plot twist comes at the last second. Somehow, Light definitely lost this one." And that's exactly what happened. That might be the first time I ever had a correct prediction about a show. I'm usually way off. But that was so obvious to me. It was certainly emotional seeing Light go crazy and eventually die on the steps as Ryuk writes his name in his Death Note, but that was a good thing. I didn't feel sorry for him; what I wanted to see was how the world recovered from the whole ordeal.

The problem was that Light said from the start that he wanted to be the god of a new world. However, the world was not at all the focus of this anime. Light just killed criminals at first, then passed his duties off to three other people. Death Note is not an anime about a psycho becoming the god of a new world - it's an anime about a psycho trying to get rid of the obstacles in his way to becoming the god of a new world. In the end, he changes nothing. He even says that the world is still rotten.

So if you think about it, the end takes you right back to the beginning. All you're left with are the memories of some amazing intellectual battles. The battles were so good that they alone make this a 9 for me. I didn't really sympathize with many characters (just Naomi, Penber, and Misa), but L and Light, and even Near (who I didn't like) and Mello (who was fine, but didn't really play a huge role until the end) provided some incredible duels with so many plot twists that I couldn't believe it. But I didn't like L - I was torn as to who to root for, because if Light won, it would be more entertaining, but if L won, it would be better. When L died, I was shocked, but it didn't matter, because two more rivals appeared.

I thought Death Note was a great tale of a psychopath's rise and fall, but the scope should have been broadened. So much more could have been said with 37 episodes. It just ended up being mostly intellectual battles, but I can't complain - they were the best part. What Death Note is missing, in my opinion, is emotion; it doesn't make you feel too much of anything, other than shock. A story about mass murder should at least provoke some more sadness than that. Instead, we see the world mostly through Light's eyes: as a list of names in a notebook. It's one hell of an exciting ride, but that excitement's not just the main attraction, it's the only one.

It leaves me wanting more, quite simply. I rate based on how an anime makes me feel, and as excited and satisfied I was with the entire show, I just didn't get the 10 feeling from it. A wonderful anime that put too much emphasis on plot twists and not enough on emotion. It really needed to make a bigger impact, but as is, I think it's still worthy of the hype it gets. I don't think there's anything like it out there.

I started watching Death Note via streaming on the net but after the second episode I had to order the 2 seasons on DVD from Amazon. I new that this series was going to be one for my collection. Having finished it I consider it one of the top 5 anime masterpieces, just below Elfen Lied.

I thought the ending was inevitable, Light had become evil and insane by the Death Notebook. My sympathy was toward the pop idol who i assume committed suicide.

Finished this anime a WHILE ago, but:

Wow. This anime just can't win, can it? Light dies, people get angry. If Light lived, people would get angry. To me it's pretty obvious from episode 1 that he's going to die. But I guess half of you don't have that natural instinct, huh? My friend supported Light to no ends, and still appreciated the ending. It's not like L magically came back to life or anything
I mean, I get the disappointment, but that's no reason to be SO upset at this anime. I loved L, and although I was pissed when he died, I didn't dislike this anime any less. Some people just needa chiiiilllllll.

First of all, I'd like to say this ahead of time- My apologies. This is one bulky response, lol, but I have a lot to say about this anime as I'm sure most people do. I just have a horrible tendency to extend the length of what I'm trying to convey and make it kind of more complicated.

Okay, anyways, I absolutely adore this anime so much.
The ending was also absolutely fascinating,& let's face it, in the end good prevails over evil. Light's intentions to form a new world free of crime was good, of course, but if no one realized how insane he began to act, then they were probably watching this show with a blindfold on.

Okay, now I'm to address something that a whole bunch of people start complaining about. "It's not the ending that ruined it, it was when Mello and Near appeared" I, too, was EXTREMELY disappointed and broken hearted when L died, and I refused to go on watching it even after learning he had successors, but aren't you guys being a little too narrow-minded? L was going to be beaten by Kira, even if Remi didn't write down his name. I'm almost 95% certain about that (lol, starting to deduce like L and his percentage things).
You see, I've been thinking about it for quite awhile, but after analyzing the relationship between the two of them has led to my own conclusion that perhaps the reason L got himself killed was obviously being involved in so many messed up situations, but it was also because he allowed himself to get too close to Light.

I'm not exactly sure what that fully means, but I know that after Light was given a confirmation from his father that he was indeed the true L, after that...everything changed (which is to be expected). L then started to take an interest in Light, and although the true intention L had when he invited Light to work on the investigation with him was to interrogate him...L knew what position he put himself in. He literally just showed up to the person who he suspected to be Kira, stayed by him knowing that anytime he could be killed. This is the TRUTH because why else would they have an orphanage for L's successor? This is in case he were to die, right?
I mean, L has been put it many difficult cases, but according to all the other officers, he rarely puts his life at stake.

When Roger told Mello and Near news that L had died, Mello asked "Who did he end up choosing?" A very large step to make a decision on who you want as your successor when you believe you won't die, right? L knew that he would die (hinted several times, don't know if anyone else caught them), and so I don't see why everyone is so surprised.

And now off to the whole "Near and Mello" hating business- particularly Near. Who did you want to take over L's position, now knowing that he was going to die anyways? A middle-aged man...FBI agent with a boring background and basically very little things that set him apart from any other agent? That would not only bore me to death, but Light could outsmart him...but instead it was Near in that position. I don't see why people say they hate Near. When Light talked to Near the first time he could sense that same aura that L had. What does that say about Near?
In no way does it say that he's an ordinary person that has no chance against Light. If anything, it would be the opposite of that. So, then, why hate Near when he's obviously the perfect person for the job..?

Is it because he's a "boring person" with "not a lot of character development"? We have to remember that Near comes towards the end of the series, where they left no room for character development, but only room for driving the plot to its end. I do agree that they could have done a better job introducing and developing Near, but it's to be expected. In the series, he had a very important objective and that was to capture and arrest Kira. He stuck to it, and in the end he ended up winning. How do you expect him to "change"? During this process of capturing Light, he did appear to have no reaction to anything that did not involve catching Kira, making him appear very dull, boring, and bluntly said a cold-hearted person...but you heard it from Mello, right? Near is the kind of person that would use others to get what he wants, in fact, everything is like a game to him. In a game, he has to win no matter what (revealed through his over confident attitude), he has to stick to his objectives and always be alert so he can carefully plan out his next move was. It's no wonder he's always shown with a different toy every time he appears. People play games differently, and people have different attitudes and ways of reacting while playing the game, and in Near's case, he believed that the best way to win is play by stepping back a little and not exposing his emotions. As we learned through most of Mello's actions, his emotions often drove him, and they don't usually turn out so well. L was caught in this as well, and so in the end this method worked out very well for Near. I'm not saying it's what made him win, but it certainly did contribute to his victory.

Near is a genius. Different from Mello, L, and Light who are also geniuses, but each genius has a separate personality, and Near just happens to be lacking a little in the "human emotions" department, but that gives us a better picture of what kind of person he is. You see, just because a character is "emotionless", "dull", or "doesn't change a lot" does not give you the right to automatically label him as having "no personality" at all. He's emotionless and this is how he acts. This is the kind of person he is, and there's no changing that if he's the kind of person that is stubborn and does not like to change. Of course, there's always a reasoning behind the way people act, so I kind of wish they dug deeper into that.

Oh my gosh. This is one lonnggng post.

LOL... Light was stupid. L was way smarter, though dumb in his own way. Light had every advantage from the beginning but totally got figured out, and the only reason he wasn't owned right at the start was because L didn't have the balls to just put a bullet in him at first suspicion but instead waited for "proof". TBH, it was super unrealistic that someone as dumb as Light would evade being caught for that long.

I was so happy when Near beat him and showed everyone what a punk Light really was. He was never in it for a better world, it was always about him passing judgement on people who were actually way less evil and way less dangerous than himself. Those types always break down when they are outplayed, outsmarted, and outclasssed.

A very well done and fitting ending to the series. Light was exposed to everyone for what he was and dying was probably more to his taste than spending a life in prison. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and I think this anime portrayed that well.

Like many I though the best moments of this show were in the first 20 chapters or so. The appearance of Near and Mello was unexpected and they felt somewhat out of place in the way they looked and acted. In any case, I thought that the last 2 chapters compensated a bit for that.

the ending sucks.it works such a way that all the main char died.wtf?come on!it's ok if light is dead but the fact that misa committed suicide is one thing that i can't accept.

and yeah,i thought the last few mins should be smthg like a girl with a hood(refer to manga) which i expect to be misa and light baby(prolly after 10 years) get new deathnote and this anime will be continued to season 2, which their child will avenge Light death.

I hated this ending,Light was my all-time favorite character and it was really unreliable that he lost to Near, for me,it seems like this ending is very forced, like they thought they have to kill light, even if it ends up unrealistic, the explanations werent logical, they made mikami and light look like fools, which they arent.
i planned to give this show a 9,but i have changed my mind,i will give it a 8.

Funny that most who hate the ending have childish thoughts, wanting the MC to
Win all the time and be good, they can't
Handle this :P
No wonder they like a fluffy ending like code geass xD

This anime had a lot of potential, in my opinion it would have been better with less than 20 epiodes, or at least if it had started with L and Kira and ended that way. Ever since the note started changing its owner it got so boring and stupid. Light at first was amazing, his psycho personality was just perfect, but after he forgot everything and then remembered, I came to dislike him. He was so damn false that I couldn't even feel emotion when someone died. I like fake characters, but he's definitely not the type of fake I like.
The ending was tragic at least, nice.

I felt the anime dragged on too long, it was still good but without L it just wasn't the same. I did like near but the for the last few episodes I was just hoping it'd hurry up and get to the point. Still a very enjoyable anime, particularly the first few episodes.

jst finished watching the series excellent however it seemed as if light would have seen this comming seeing how many other things he pre planned nowing people wld pull double and triple twists on there plans also if he had been calm when he started writing the names at the end he wouldn't have got shot although its possible that seeing as u can be controlled before your death for a period of time maybe ryuk cld have set the hole thing up.

does misa commit suicide at the end of the episode it doesnt show here jumping just on a roof top if she does then light cldnt have been killed by ryuk because the person
who's name is written in the book can not lead to anyone elses death so if misa dies because light dies that cldnt be the case unless the rule does not apply to a god of death also it is ryuk who must write lights name in his book so if he cldnt kill him then because of misa light shld be imortal unless i missed something

I wasn't on any team with this anime. I didn't particularly liked or disliked any of the characters. I think the period where Light was chained to L was important to me. It showed me that Light, although still having the same opinions would have acted out his life differently if the death note would have never entered his life. I think he would have become like his father.
I have the feeling that the relationship between Light and L is one of respect and even in some form friendship and admiration, even when they want to kill/capture each other. Even after L's death Light keeps thinking of him, more than of any other person. It is really sad, in a different world they probably would have been friends for life, hunting crime together.
I don't think any of the characters was totally good or bad. It is just when people are tempted with great power/money/... it can make good people do bad things.

I thought it was a shame that Light became totally creepy again when he regained his memory. I think he really had started to like L and that should have made hem hesitate a bit about wanting to kill him... When he didn't had his memory he was able to put the murders in perspective; he didn't like them, but he knew that sometimes it was somehow justified. I think he also realised that some murders could never be justified and where just plain evil -no matter what the big picture was-. When he just regained his memory he should have realised that he crossed some boundaries in the madness of his power. He should have struggled more with the idea of killing (innocent) people he liked/loved.

Didn't like Light going al crazy and the plot felt a bit weak. I understand he would have been frustrated and he really didn't like to lose, but he just breaks down...

It's nice to read my own thoughts:) I agree with all you wrote. I really believed that after regaining his memories Light would change. The creepiest moment for me was when he touched the DN, remembered everything and shouted. This shout contained shock, despair and dismay. I was so absolutely disappointed hearing his "I won!" just after that... It is sad that he actually left himself (his moral rules, personality and even his ideals later) in order to make his dream come true. I think he got lost in his visions and eventually ended up being too much 'Kira' and too less 'Light Yagami', achieving his egoistic goals by murdering and manipulating, not really "making the new, better world".

I didn't like that ending, but I have to admit, that it fitted the series. I think Light should act differently, but... on the other hand I can understand that he has gone mad and haughty, considering himself as a god. Just didn't like seeing Kira powerless and not prepared for this kind of situation after he showed his amazing cleverness and intelect throughout the series...

I have to admit the ending was good. However it was sad to see Light cornered and I was actually angry at Ryuk for killing him.
