Sometimes I will be browsing and stumble across an anime that looks like it might be good, but then I see it has been listed under the "Shoujo" genre. Since I know that Shoujo means it has been marketed towards younger girls, I usually disregard the anime.

Lately, however, I've been questioning my decision to ignore Shoujo anime. Shoujo might be marketed towards girls, but I can't help but have this feeling that it probably isn't nearly as bad as I think it is.

Are there any guys out there who have watched and enjoyed a Shoujo anime before?
Some parts of this post may be exaggerated.

A good shoujo series every now and then can be really nice. I don't think you should narrow down potential series by stuff like targeted demographic.

Guys who don't watch shows that aren't targeted at their gender are going to miss awesome shows like Kaichou wa Maid-sama! and Chihayafuru.

Do girls find shounen interesting?

I'm a girl and my answer is yes, so it is possible for guys to find shoujo interesting. Just read the top review for Arcana Famiglia.

From a guy's perspective here. They are all REALLY cliche with the strong tsundere girl and the charming asshole guy who is usually very rich. Worst of the genre (Talking about manga) has to be the authors Hwang Mi Ri and Han Yu Rang. They chug out so many series too...sometimes I wonder if they are companies...

Anime wise...I find most of the stuff like Hakuoki to be fujoshi bait...
As a child, I was told that society is a melting pot of talents; knowledge and experience combined to form important alloys that will contribute to mankind. When I got to highschool, however, I thought that it's more like a river in which the water represents our peers while we ourselves are the stones in the river. Constant erosion by mindless majority sheeping has made us lose our unique edge. After I hit the age of 18, I realized that I've been wrong all along. Society is no melting pot. Society is no river. Society is a person, a very skilled rapist, and he has fucked us all.

I've been guilty of writing off anime based on their genre in the past. However, I've recently started expanding my horizons and been surprisingly pleased by a lot of the shows that I didn't think I'd enjoy. A good anime that isn't targeted at your demographic may have less of a chance to appeal to you, but it doesn't mean it's not worth a try. Like mitch said, there's some good titles you'll pass up.

One of my favorite series (Akage no Anne) is labeled as shoujo and I have Fruits basket and Kimi ni todoke in my plan to watch list, so here you are. It's not a genre I have explored too much but in principle I don't have anything against it.

Oh, and I guess Whisper of the heart can also be considered shoujo. It's one of my top5 favorite anime movies (as well as the source for my avatar).

Edit: Oh shit, and Princess Tutu. How the hell could I forget about that one.

Well shoujo does tend to get pretty boring because it's always about girls with big googly eyes liking hot guys that appear out of nowhere. Other than that, if shoujo authors did something "new" for a change, then i would certainly read it.

You really shouldn't let that sort of stuff affect you. If you find it interesting, go ahead and watch it.

I've watched a few shoujo and josei anime and I've enjoyed them.

I'm not really into the high-school romance flavour of shoujo, but I have plenty of mahou shoujo and more fantasy-themed shoujo that I am a fan of as a guy (and I am not counting Madoka in this, as that's seinen), not to mention that I also enjoy things on the darker/more adult of shoujo such as Nana (even if the amount of drama in it is quite ridiculous. And I believe it is shoujo, not josei, though there may be overlap) and Rose of Versailles.

Absolutely, but it depends more on the individual show than the genre as a whole. I thought Kimi ni Todoke was pretty awesome, and I want to kill Fruits Basket with something bludgeony.
So, it's hit or miss for me, like any genre would be.

Never limit yourself with a single genre, your bound to miss out on some good reads.

I try to find a variety of genre's to read and I was quite shocked when I found out that 70% of what I read is shoujo. :D

Woah, I post the topic and go to sleep, and it has multiple pages when I wake up.

Like I said, up until now I had always been avoiding Shoujo with the assumption that it will have feminine themes that would bore me. Then, rationality kicked in and I thought that maybe not all Shoujo would be uninteresting.

Since now I know that guys do in fact watch Shoujo, are there any suggestions that people have? Obviously I'm kinda new to the Shoujo genre, so any suggestions of decent Shoujo are fine.
Some parts of this post may be exaggerated.

shoujo can be interesting but like any genre, you have to pick the right shows. I think I was lucky that Fushigi Yuugi was one of my earliest animes.

frankly i find it harder and harder to find new anime i like, but thats my problem. i have to work harder b/c i DO love anime.

Although I tend to gravitate towards shounen by nature I have been known to enjoy some shoujo such as Ouran, Nichijou, and Kuragehime (Princess Jellyfish).

I was under the impression for a while that all shoujo was romance, but found myself to be wrong. Don't give up on shoujo before you've seen any is my advice.

I feel like this is the most ignorant topic I've seen in awhile.

Anyhow, I don't see why they wouldn't.
If you like harems, which is way worse than shoujo, you hopefully should like Shoujo, or at least some.

Full Moon is a Shoujo, so is Maid-Sam. Both I know are really good.

I also don't really understand why guys wouldn't like Shoujo, maybe because they think it's girly?

I initially avoided shoujo manga/anime thinking that I should probably not read/watch stuff that was supposedly aimed at girls, but I've read a few shoujo manga, my favorite being Kimi ni Todoke, which has the best romance out of any manga I've ever read.

I actually haven't watched any shoujo anime yet, but I plan on it. Especially mahou shoujo, I've got a bit of an interest.

I don't like shoujo hardly at all I do like Josei. I think I feel then age barrier more than the gender barrier.

I haven't finished tiger & bunny yet even though it really isn't shoujo it has a huge fangirl base. Tiger and bunny is a good show I just have trouble getting into it because of the "fan girl" stuff. It just isn't as appealing to me. Yet Black butler I though was way awesome... and thats like the biggest fangirl show ever so idk it varies but the odds are stacked more against you it seems if it is shoujo.

Yes.

Shoujo might be marketed towards girls, but that doesn't mean that guys won't also enjoy it.
Their aim is to make a show that girls will enjoy, not one that guys won't.

I usually read the synopsis and watch it if it looks interesting. Sometimes you can't even tell it's shoujo, other than the genre tag.
There may be a crappy one here and there, but that can be said for any other genre too.

It is just as interesting/boring as everything else. There is no point in letting some demographic affect you. It is the content that matters. So if it is going the be primarily about the dreaded high schools, I'll skip any shoujo as fast as I'd skip any shounen/seinen/josei.

I've never really understood what the shoujo genre is. I just watch stuff that looks cool, some of it gets labeled as shoujo, and I've enjoyed many of them. The only genre that I consistently find boring is yaoi.

I can find anything interesting. The only thing the work really needs is good writing.

By the way, just so people know, shoujo, shounen, josei, and seinen refer to target demographics. They're not genres.
