I've noticed that for every good review MAL has there are at least five bad ones. There are so many problems with the write-ups it's not even funny.

One of the main problems is when a summary of a story takes up more space than their thoughts on the anime or manga itself. What do you think plot summaries available in the database are for? Should I just tell you that this topic rants about one-episode reviews, spelling, and circle-jerking and leave it at that?

Another issue is how so many critiques are written after the first episode. I can't say anything more than that but I think this topic is going to be a lot more awesome after the next episode reply.

There's also the spelling. Do u no how annoying it is trying 2 figure out wat peeple r saying? Im not expecting purfect writing but i think there shud be a attempt at being understand able. It gets even worse when peeple try 2 put emotes 2 make up 4 words and even throw random Japanese -_-. Its so hidoi! >_<

On the opposite side we have the people who talk over our heads. The elaboration on their inner thoughts to thereby express their views on Japanese animation and comic books becomes becomes rather vexing when a statement that may be made short is lengthened so as to give the reader the impression of intelligence. Rather than be straightforward in their endeavors to describe why a character from such fictional works has charmed them, they will instead instead attempt to extrapolate the deeper themes of attractiveness that dictate human psychology and why camera angles showing the posterior of a female's skirt may or may not be enticing. They will rarely ever say what they want to say for the sake of appearances and as to put barriers to prevent person to person discussion on any given subject matter.

At any rate, this is my first serious topic. Please be nice. I put a lot of work into the 30 seconds I spent on this.

Most reviews here are crap. Putting aside biasness, fanboying or fangirling reviews, people need to work on their grammar, spelling and paragraphing etc.

Well,I guess it would work out if we had a reviewer who could write reviews that everyone will like. I'm not trying to attack you or anything but,why not trying to write reviews yourself? :o Who knows, you could be really good at it.

Concerning the 3rd paragraph, well,I'm not trying to defend them or anything but,I guess people get excited easily? Idk man. I remembered when a few people gave Kuroko no Basket's a 10 just after the first episode came out. Weird.

And concerning the 5th paragraph, most of the time,I just don't read them lol. TL;DR. People like to make themselves seem more intelligent,I guess. *Shrug*

Well, not everyone takes reviewing seriously here. Some users, upon finishing an anime that they loved, write a review consisting of nothing but "I LOVE THIS AMINU!!!!!!!!!11111 _________ IS SO KAWAII DESU~~~~~~ =^_______________^=". The good thing is, these reviews are quickly bumped back to the later pages.

You should also remember that not everyone here is a critic. Not everyone knows how to write an effective review. Not everyone has perfect spelling/grammar. For some people, English may be their second or third language. And while I do agree with you that having some sort of system in which reviews must be approved by the MAL staff would be useful, I don't think it's fair to stop people from expressing their thoughts about an anime. Then again, they could just do it in the episode discussion topics.

As for the second part of your post, I'm kind of guilty of doing what you said. :P Once again, it's just a matter of writing style. Reviews that tend to drag on become bumped back, since people aren't willing to sit down for an hour just to know if they should watch an anime or not.

When there are reviews made after one episode rating 10/10 saying "I think this anime is awesome so you should watch it" and nothing more... yeah

Those reviews are often downrated and don't show up on the first page. And since anyone could just create a review, you're bound to have problems like grammar and spelling. I just count on good reviewers like Archaeon and tehnominator.

That's the same for everything? If I read a magazine review on something than the vast majority of the time I don't consider it to be very good or I eventually tried whatever it was that the review was about and found that it was wrong.

It's far from a problem just centred on MAL.

Those are two of my favorite reviewers, too. I don't have a problem with first episode reviews at all, though. I mean, I'm not going to watch the first episode of every new show that airs. If I look at the page for a new series and see a low-scoring review, I probably won't waste my time. After all, it he first episode is pretty much the most important of any series, since it has to grab the viewer's interest and make him/her want to keep watching, so if the first episode is no good, that's a bad sign. On the other hand, somebody could write a rave review for something for which I had low expectations, and I might decide to give it a shot after all.

You could put some commas here and there.

But whatever, I've got the idea, just that I wanted to tell you, so you don't sound like a hypocrite.

Yes, reviews here are crap, I usually don't check them out first, only after. So I know if the guys who have written it actually understood the story/meaning/anime in general/w.e (of course, how I understand it = how they should understand it).

And how much I hate people that review an ecchi anime and call it bad because it has fan service (OH GOD!). If it's goddamn ecchi, it's because it has goddamn fan service, tons of it, and quite explicit too. Or that they rate some anime because the ending was too sad for them (oh noez protagonist didn't get his gf and she died, bla bla bad anime).

I hate people that think "cliches" should downvote a story/character to 1-3, it's like they think people shit originality, and that being "special" is always the right thing. You know, if a protagonist starts taking a shit on his girlfriend in public in a Romance/Slice of Life anime it's hell of original and not cliched, but nobody said it's good.

Or people that see plotholes where there are no goddamn plotholes but only them checking if they washed their assholes when the story is being developed.

Or people that downvote Character Development (once again), because the Dandere felt like she was too silent and emotionless in general (Yes, I've seen this in a review, and many people agreed with it), or that she's stupid because she has no emotions. But hey, it's not obvious being DANDERE means being quiet almost emotionless then starting to open up if people talk to you (yes, shy).

Then don't read the bad ones. Or better yet, don't read them at all.

There, I just saved you a lot of pointless rage and wasted time reading shit reviews.

I think at least some of the reviews are probably because they review after JUST getting done with it which can lead to over exaggeration of some points of the story because its fresh in the mind. Given time and perspective they would lower the score but i understand the want to review while still having the details fresh in your mind. So its more of a double edged sword.

But some are obviously just fanboys and wanking on and on about their fav anime is just a pastime.

Which is why i have restrained myself from writing a review of HOTD. I love that damn show so much id have given it a ten on everything. It would have been a two page summary and then half of it would prob be just me ranting about how awesome Saeko is and how badly i want Rei impale herself on her own bayonet.

The only gripe I ever had with Archaeon was his review of Neon Genesis Evangelion. For all of his informative and great reviews, the one he gave for Evangelion reeked of pure and utter bias and an obvious lack of effort in actually grasping the series with an open mind. Even worse, he practically admits that he's just fed up with the amount of coverage and re-broadcasts it gets hence his absolute need in telling people how "horrible" it is. Sure people have their ups and downs, but he couldn't have possibly missed the point of the story if his review really reflects his own thoughts of the series. It's almost as if he didn't even watch the whole thing given the content and the topics he discussed in his review.

That said, I wouldn't mind starting on writing anime reviews myself (if time and the future permits me.)

Reviewers must be neutral, trying to think from more points of view THEN add their own opinion.

This is what I see as a perfect reviewer.

Death to 1-2 episode reviews. But ya, I agree with the review system on MAL, there should be a revamp to include a feedback/comment section rather than a helpful/not helpful.

There are some users on this site though that writes excellent reviews and puts insightful thoughts and subjective support into them which I enjoy spending my time reading.

Nothing here that hasn't been brought up a zillion times before. The report function is there for troll reviews, and you can downvote reviews after 1 episode or ones with fail grammar. And yes, downvoting can be used as a tool of spite by users, but there's not much you can do in this world to prevent butthurt.
