I love it, as simple as that :) I really enjoy having something awesome to watch every day ^w^
When I discover an epic anime, and can watch that epicness for days, weeks or even months, it's just great!

A number of reasons. Here are the most important ones:
  • I need a geeky, imagination-inducing hobby for sustenance and this one is the least harmful and in some cases even a good thing
  • I like Japan
  • I like the art style
  • Huge variety of shows leading to my inexorable craving for this type of entertainment
  • Mood lifting and relaxing qualities

It's definitely not my only source of entertainment, and I would also hesitate to refer to it as a "hobby." Unless you consider watching television a hobby, because it's about as much a hobby as that.

I watch because I love the style, I love animation, and I love the subtext and symbolism (of certain series, at least). It's interesting to see concepts, stories, and characters written from the perspective of a different culture. I also enjoy watching because I like languages, and I gradually pick up more Japanese as I watch. If you see a word or phrase in the subtitles enough, you begin to understand which word or phrase in the dialogue corresponds with it. Then you begin to understand sentence structure a bit more as you put all the pieces together. It's fun. :)

My childhood was heavily influenced by DBZ and FF7.

Then I found One Piece...Slayers...Ippo...Slam Dunk...

Then I just started watching anime regularly. Everyone around me also watches it so it feels natural.

Some characters have very similar personalities as myself so its easy to relate to real life. It's fun to watch how they do things and think about what I would do in their shoes.

Hell, half my english essays were rip-offs of shows I've watched lol. (Better marks ftw)

Isit Fun? Yes.

My only form of Entertainment? No.

Hobby? Somewhat. More like I started new hobbies because of anime influence.^^

In an anime universe, anything can happen, literally anything. I enjoy watching something without those classic "good-guy wins, everybode lives happily ever after" plots. Even if the good guy happens to win in the end, in serious anime you never know if that is really gonna be the case or not. When watching EU or US stuff you almost always know what's up with it, as it's always the same shit.

Even the most average stereotype shows (comedy / ecchi) which we have seen a thousand times and where it's not centered around a plot as there is none, is often times still funny, depending on your taste and humor of course :-P

And as many will agree, many dramas are really dramas. How often do you read of manly tears here or on reddit or in a forum after someone has seen an anime (Clannad etc.). Happens quite often from what I've read.

Now all that ain't gonna happen when watching something else.

As for me, I just wished there was a better way of identifying utter crap shows, as most shows are overrated by it's viewers just because it's an anime :(

Just for an entertainment. I try my best not to get too into it though for my own good.
However, it's true that the world of certain anime seems better than the world we live in.

I like animation in general, it allows you to creative things that would be otherwise impossible or super expensive to do. anime allows you do have this while not being super expensive so they can have no limits / very few. think how silly gundam would look live action. They would either have to focus all of their money on cgi or have very fake/bad looking cgi. its also sort of a form of art, from Gankutsuou art style to k-on you have a lot of options. also anime unlike american cartoons have a much wider range of demographics, while tom and jerry is great, sometimes I want to watch something other than silly shows that are mainly for kids, tho anime has many titles for children they are usually aimed torwards older childeren/teens like naruto and bleach. in a way you could say higurashi is like scooby doo for teens, I doubt that the swamp monster or whatever from scooby doo scares you anymore so lets replace it with something more intense.

~Do you watch it because it's fun?
~Do you watch it because it's your only source of entertainment?
~Do you watch it as a hobby?

My answer is all of the above except the second question.

Anime / manga are not only source of entertainment. I love also watching TV drama and movie, and not only that, but also playing video games or listening to music can be entertainment.

However, anime is the most familiar / convenient entertainment for me now. It only plays 20 mins and brings enjoyment within short period. Also gives good inspiration to write about. It's pretty awesome I guess.

It's a hobby for those times I am extremely bored. And well, it's fun.
I consider myself fortunate for valuing my real life a lot more than anime. If I watch too much anime, I rot.

I watch it because american tv is so horrible, ugh. I don't see how people can watch some of these shows without falling asleep! But I do like alot of old cartoons. Tom and Jerry FTW! But these days I am too lazy to watch old american cartoons. Anime is pretty much all I watch.

I have been watching anime as long as I remember. Probably back when I was like 4 years old, that's 22 years ago now. I no longer remember what the original appeal it has back when I was a child but simply but it, anime is my preferred medium of entertainment till now and with no signs of slowing down.

I've been watching anime for about 2 years now. The reason I got into anime was this weird ass AMV of a System of a down song. Saw an amazing Naruto vs. Sasuke fight and I just had to see the entire episode. So, I got into anime because of just one episode of Naruto.
But...after that I started watching some other shows and...well I have to say it kinda destroyed my entire view of the world. Shattered it. In a good way :P
Sooooo I can't give it up. Can't let it down. And can't run around and desert it.

Depth, complexity, creativity, message, engaging characters, a look that appeals to my esthetic. Generally, something directed at a slightly older audience. Drama - Mystery/Thriller - Psychological
-animeS - The plural of anime is anime. More than one deer is still deer. There is no damn "s".
-epic |ˈepik| noun•a work portraying heroic deeds/adventures covering an long period of time - adjective • heroic/grand in scale or character

First thing I look for is my favourite type of character (usually the badass). If there is one then I move on to story/plot, soundtrack, length, cute girl (LoL) and a good atmosphere.
