Punch of Courage was a lame way to end the Kishin but it makes sense considering how things where building up in the last episodes.
Shame such a good anime had such a bland ending (in comparison with how awesome the rest of the series is)

9/10 - Awesome build up, average conclusion
huh?

- I understand Maka turning into a Death Scythe because of the black blood. Not to mention, Spirit is her father. But a punch of courage killed Asura yet Shinigami-sama couldn't? WHAT. THE. HELL. I am disappointed.

- I liked the second half, I guess. Except for the ending. I still enjoyed Soul Eater though.

lol glad to see im not the only one who thought the ending was lame.

but anyways, a pretty overrated series if you ask me. It had some occasional good action scenes, and it was kinda funny at times, but overall i really couldnt get that into it. I hated how corny it was at times and how they made things drag on a lot longer than they should have. final score for me 7/10

O and Excalibur was easily the best character.

Horrible ending to an awesome anime. Maka turning into a weapon was a bad idea because then Soul completely loses his purpose, not to mention their explanation was weak.

Also, this whole thing about the power of courage was not only unbelievably corny, but also disregards the fact that Lord Death, Kid and Black Star all fought with loads of courage and couldn't beat Asura, but Maka beats him with a single punch? lame.

I don't get why Maka turning into a weapon is badly explained ? Her mom was a meister and her dad is a Weapon,so she is both.

8/10

Loved kept me wanting to see the next episode.

wow she used the talk no jutsu then punched him? thats it? he barely took anydamage before then she just punches him and its over? then how come none of black star's punches worked? or kid's bullets? iwas expecting something more epic but now but it turned out to be one of the lamest endings ever...

A disappointing ending, but in all its cliche-ness it still leaves me with a satisfied feeling. This series needs the fma treatment and hopefully in due time will get it. I still really enjoyed the series - I am a fan of the second half! 8/10

lol the password is courage ?? yeah right ! even shinigami sama can't kill kishin in one hit. and she even didn't needed a weapon lol .

I think why maca can turn to be a weapon is because her father himself is a weapon so she inherited it just like she inherited the anti demon wave lenght from her mom...

This series needed more of Soul eater Evans . feels like he's just an supporting character through entire series he didn't have his own development .

too cliche for me...
anyway, I'm not sure but I heard that they remade the ending or something like that, I don't know if it was just one episode or more, but it was released in japan secretly or something like that...
if I find it I'll let you know ;)

WHAT THE F**K?!?!?! You ended it like that, Maka just using a punch fueled by her courage? BULLSH*T!!!

I could handle most of the filler material in the second half, even Death City turning into a robot but Asura being "killed" by a simple punch in the face was stupid. So stupid that my final score for Soul Eater is an 8/10. It was going to be a 9/10 but that ending alone is why I drop the score down.

Soul Eater's still great anyway.

I knew the ending would be terrible when it went all anime original but wow that was really bad.

Courage? really? they made the Kishin a loser and Maka the weakest and worst character somehow the strongest. Black Star + Kid are infinitely times better than lame Maka. really tough that was a terrible ending.

should have just ended it and never did any of the horrible anime original content and just did another season when the manga got further.

From what I hear, the anime stays true the manga up until Shinigami makes a deal with little Medusa.

Also (I haven't read the manga btw, but I do intend to)... I thought of a better way for the anime to end that would at least make ME feel better... Instead of punching, Maka should have flicked Asura the way he flicked Black Star and the others before. At least that would be some sort of revenge for them. Just my opinion though. :P

That was pretty lame. This series was usually at least more stylish than most shonen action shows, if not actually any more clever. This was just pure sentimentality, though. It's not like they've been hitting on that all along or built up to this or anything.

On the contrary, it defies the only thing that really been a part of this series all along; partnership. The series is built around two (or three) people having to cooperate on a deep level to fight monsters and it extends that to the three main sets of protagonists cooperating as a larger team, but in the end Maka kills the kishin all on her own with the others only playing a supporting role.

Since when was she Superman? Or maybe Goku would be a better analogy.

just no.

7/10, shitty ending

it's called soul eater, atleast use soul to finish kishin off.

it is also called Soul Eater..because the students of Shibusen have the goal to swallow 99 souls.. and 1 witch soul or something like that

I think people are looking too much into the cliche of the "courage punch" Maka used to defeat Asura. The way I see it is Asura was defeated because he didn't understand why everyone was putting their faith in Maka, when he thought she was weaker then kid and black star. Sometimes people are afraid of what they don't understand and the kishin was no different, that is what ultimately defeated him (his fear of not understanding). It's pretty obvious that that is what the creators were trying to portray because they repeatability showed the words "Don't understand" and then finally "Don't understand=Afraid". I think that fear greatly weakened him which is why Maka's punch was so effective.

Just my two cents. Overall the series get a 9 from me.

My question for this piece of shit episode is, why did Maka turn into a weapon in the first place? She literally got her ass kicked again, and that was the end of that. It was a horrible twist in the first place, and it served no purpose. Horrible.

Okay after the first half of this episode I thought that I could forgive them about wasting Medusa's and Arachne's death. But god damnit the second half was so full of shit that it's unbelievable.

Okay we have the almighty Maka Albarn who lost to freaking Crona not too long ago go one on one (without Soul) against The Kishin. Yes the same Kishin who ate Arachne's soul, beat Kid and Black Star at the same time and defeated fucking Shinigami.

And how did the almighty Maka Albarn beat the unbeatable Kishin. WITH A FUCKING PUNCH FILLED WITH COURAGE!!!! You've got to be fucking kidding me. Why not beat him with hugs and kisses?

Give me a break. The end of this series was waaaaaay rushed, Medusa's death was rushed, Arachne's death was waaaay rushed. And Kishin lost to Maka after a punch. Fuck you Bones! I can't believe it's the same studio that did Fullmetal Alchemist.

I actually liked this show Very much, would have easily gotten an 8. But the last episodes made me rage so fucking much......

6/10 and Fuck this shit. I'll go and read the manga instead.

I think the series wrapped up pretty well considering it was adapted from a manga series that has yet to finish. It wasn't a cliff hanger ending but it struck a nice balance between finishing up the plot and remaining open. There's definitely room here for a continuation or hell, even an FMA: Brotherhood style reboot. (This is Bones after all.)

That said, the only qualm I had with the ending is how Maka went at it solo. Soul Eater had three major themes: working together despite differences, order vs chaos and courage vs fear. The first theme was completely tossed out the window when Maka was able to "defeat" Asura on her own. It would have been nice if she's filled herself and Soul with that courage and delivered that final blow. Anyway, Asura's downfall still makes sense to me, even if I wasn't completely satisfied by everything. There are several complaints I keep reading about that I'd like to address:

-Maka was able partially become a weapon because she has the blood of weapon (ie Spirit, her father) in her veins. Asura himself couldn't help but wonder if she was a meister with weapon bloodlines or a weapon who simply became a meister. This was the beginning of his freakout.

-For her part Maka wielded herself while unconscious and has no memory of it, nor did anyone besides Asura see her do this. This seemed more like a self-preservation move and I doubt she'd be able to do it while fully conscious.

-Asura is pure madness as such logical solutions simply had no effect on him. He simply wiped his mind of all fear and as long as he could see himself victorious he could overcome any challenge. (In the case of Death he simply cheated.) Hell, not even Kishin Hunter worked on him because he wasn't truly evil like Medusa (who isn't dead-- she's in snake form during the credits). When someone as weak as Maka refused to roll over and die he couldn't understand it. A lack of understanding can bring about fear. So basically his own logical completely fell apart and he lost all certainty (despite his own claims). Maka on the other hand was absolutely certain and carried the convictions of everyone into that little fist of hers. Afraid of her ,the Kishin was defeated because he pretty much lost his ability to fight and reason as he saw fit.

Is it a perfect ending? No. Is it a little lame? Maybe. But hell, it still works. Considering the manga's not even close to being done I'd say this is a satisfactory ending... Not perfect but satisfying.

When I watch an anime, I want it to be 1. original 2. have plot twists and 3. have a great climax. This had all three. A nice, nostalgic ending, though I think they could have expanded more. I know the manga is different from the anime, so I really want to read that. Like, what was the thing with Kid? And how is it that Maka is a weapon and a meister? If I could of had one thing, it would have been for Maka to turn Soul into a Death Scythe at the very end, as a reminence of the begging of the story. But still, this was a nice ending. My favorite part that this was the only episode that didn't end in a question. And I'm glad that this won't be the last I'll ever see of Maka and Soul. :)

Ehhh, though I LOVED the series as a whole, and still do, despite the ending, I felt that episode 51 was definitely lacking. The manga and anime are drastically different, and I have to ask, why did make it so to the degree of difference?

1. Maka becomes a weapon. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having Soul, whom by the way is supposed to be essentially THE main character?

2. Fighting with courage. Anyone can be couragous. Why must Maka's 'courage' be the only one that 'defeats' the kishin? If anything, shoulda either been her and Soul together to defeat him, or if not that, then Kid, because he IS supposed to become a shinigami.

3. Friggin' cliff hanger! They do this talk of collecting 99 souls plus one witch soul, but you see nobody ACTIVELY achieve that throughout the duration of the anime series. I've watched the anime series and read the manga, so I must say, I'm a bit more pleased with the continuation of the manga past this point.

I can't believe it is over. Wasn't the greatest ending, but I did find it somehow more satisfying than most anime endings out there.

However, at the very end when Kishin became all loud and childish...He didn't even seem dangerous or like a worthy opponent at all. That kind of turned me away.

Overall, though, this was pretty involved. I've enjoyed it.
