How many of you could cosplay in public (not a convention)?

So this is just a quick story about today and when I was on the bus. So I was on the bus today on my way to my class, and we were nearing my stop. I had just been reading my book, and so not paying much attention to the people who had come and gone at different stops. So, as my stop approaches, I get up and walk towards the end of the bus, and holy shit I noticed that someone had gotten on the bus, and was dressed up as Itachi from Naruto. He had the coat, the shoes, the hair and even the head band.

Now, you know at first many peoples reactions would be to laugh, or call the dood stupid, but you know what, thats not the thought that came to my head at all, the thought that came to my head was "Damn that is one brave move." How much courage did it take this kid to put on that gettup and get on the bus. How long had he thought about it. But in the end, he was able to do it, he was able to put it on and get on the bus to go wherever he had to go. And you know what, I applaud him, because as I said, it takes real courage to dress like that and go into public, knowing people will stare.

I applaud him for having the courage and being able to go through with it, for not chickening out, because how many of you would have the courage to dress like that and go into public?

I could probably do it if I had at least 1 other friend dressed as comical as myself, but on my own.... to be honest, I think theres a difference between dressing like that without a reason, and dressing like that with a reason.

That guy was probably heading to some sort of event like Animania, SMASH or Supanova. So even though he was in such a position, he probably knew in an hour or so, he'll be surrounded with people cosplaying just like him. I could probably put myself in this position if it had a reason.

But to be in that position without a reason, I wouldn't be able to handle it unless, like I said, if I had at least one other person with me (and dressed like me) because then I would be mentally prepared for this "sh*ts and giggles" event.

So... if this guy dressed like that and went into public on his own or was dared to by friends or something (who didn't dress like him) then wow. But regardless of with or without reason, the idea of to be the only one dressing like that then yes this guy does deserve an applause, I'd actually feel kinda jealous witnessing this person be able to express what he loves so openly.. lol.

Was there an anime convention in town? Cause it's not like you can put on the cosplay in the bathroom...

And yeah, I'd totally walk around in cosplay in public if I was heading to a con. Indeed, I have. I walked into a Wells Fargo and took out cash for a con dressed as Vergil from DMC3. And I was proud of it, too! I actually worked at that bank so I wanted to show the costume to my co-workers. Also if I or my friends wanted food in the middle of a con, we had no problem going to a restaurant like that.

One of my friends wore a tail to school every day until the administration made him stop. It lasted almost a year, I think. But that's just a random story, on to the topic...

I for one, would avoid cosplaying in public if possible. At anime conventions, where I often wear cat ears (and more recently a tail, too -- but that's as far as I go, don't confuse me for a furry), I take them off when I go out of the con area. And that's just a head accessory. A full cosplay? I'd like to avoid that. I imagine, though, that if it had to be done, I'd do it. A few strange looks won't stop me.

And of course, the more people around me are cosplaying, the more willing I would be to.

My question for you, OP, is this: did you actually applaud his courage to his self, or are you merely applauding from the shadows?

I once rode the bus to the mall in full Protoman cosplay. Helmet and everything. With a guy dressed up as someone from Naruto who I don't recall, and another guy who was L.
We -really- wanted our Pokemon games.

Except it's likely that none of that went through his mind. It's possible that he just doesn't have any sense of shame.

Usually, crowds of Naruto-cosplaying teenagers are annoying in public. They're loud, unpleasant to look at, and stigmatize anime fans as being...well, all of the above.

Good cosplay is cool, but I see so much bad cosplay where it's just like...can you just put your clothes back on? If it's not like...nasty, then it's fine. I personally don't mind at all. But yeah...often times not the case.

Well, I occasionally dress as Touma when I go out...

It'd be nice too if I would see girls out dressed in sailor fuku. But alas.

Though if someone were to dress like, yeah, someone from Naruto or Bleach and stuff like that, it'd be pretty strange. The guy's gotta be either really brave, really apathetic or insane. That, or I'm missing an ongoing convention.

Only places I've seen full-blown cosplay is at Comicons or the comic book store. I would only do it if the costume was really well done and if the occasion called for it. Other than that, I'll stick with my tight jeans and my funny t-shirts. :)

It's not unusual if he was heading to an anime convention. If he wasn't, then for me he's nothing different from any other alto, gothic or emo. Dressed to impress drag attention.

He chose to act as an individual, such a bold move. I applaud him!
If I had a reason and a costume I would probably do it myself too. I've never been one to buy into peer pressure or social norms.

It's sad that he chose to dress as Itachi. If he had chosen something different then maybe I, wouldn't be puting this guy in the fail section of my mind. Otherwise I don't find going out with an anime costume to be degrating, I don't even think that most people care unless you wear something super flashy, like said guy, which indicates that you may not be at 100% in the head. I find anyone who wears a Naruto costume to not be at 100% in the head. But then again that's just my opinion.

Dress up as a Naruto character? no way, my Good Taste would physically inhibit me from it.

And I wouldn't just walk around in a cosplay outfit for any reason either, I'm just not an exhibitionist.
Me and some friends did go on a bus dressed up in Paintball attire once though, but that's because it's more practical than switching clothes when we get to whatever bush we're playing in.

I do it all the time.

I cosplay to most cons I go to and since they are all at a "bus distance" I usually go by bus. I even bring my big props (which, so far, are an old school microphone and an oar) with me.

The fact is that if you act like you are dressed up as you normally do, people don't pay you any attention. At most they ask what the event is about.

My character with an oar is Botan, from Yu Yu Hakusho. :p

Though I'm planning to cosplay Akari sometime soon (it was my second option for this year, but instead I'm going to cosplay Full Moon wo Sagashite Meroko. And if needed I'll still go on the bus with this costume)

To be honest, the only costume I only change into at the con site is Belldandy, because it's quite a complicated costume with wings and no shoes. Not really comfortable to wear, much less to go out in the street with it.

During my class before my lunch break my group had a report on Japanese culture, so there. lol I was just too lazy to change back to my casual clothes.

As a jerk I would've giggled at him and looked to my friend and whisper, "omg Kimi look at him crap hide your touhou phone charm!"
But seriously, well i'm not sure how to feel about it, only if you have a real purpose for it like heading to a con you can't help it.
I remember this awesome Italian guy we were in his funny smelling shop and my friend had her pink wig on and he thought it was her real hair and that we were related (even though she's 5'7'' white and I'm a 5'3'' tan girl).
Also it gets annoying my friend wore it to Denny since we went out to eat after the con was over, this waitress kept asking her questions and making her uncomfortable.

To answer a couple questions, I don't know if their was a convention in town or not (I was really engrossed in this book ok) Maybe he was heading to a friends house or something I don't know at all. All I can say for a fact was that he was in full gear on the bus.

But honestly, even if there was a convention in town, I still think that it takes major courage to get on to a bus in full gear, knowing people will stare, knowing people might yell things at you. But he didn't give up, and you know what? That is one of my definitions of courage.

I don't need courage to go in public dressed like that. Since I don't care what people will think of me, let them stare or talk...I simply don't give a sh*t! I'm me, and I'll dress as I like...

Few years ago I even crossed the center dressed as Saotome Ranma.
And during the Aniplay (yearly held anime con) few ayears ago again all cosplayers(me including) walked around in the city :P
I don't think it's something to be ashamed or afraid of :P

I don't rly think it needs courage to go on a bus dressed like that if there's a reason for it being a convention or anything else . If you have a reason , then who cares rly ?
Now if he didn't have a reason ... I don't rly get why he would dress up like that but since he did it for no reason , that shows he doesn't care what ppl might say so it wasn't rly a courage thing .
And why would you be yelled at ? o-o You can be made fun of , being whispered abt and being pointed to but I don't rly think anyone would yell except if he like took a lot of space for other passengers .

Now if it were me , if it was for a certain reason , I guess I would blush but I'd still do it , in the end I'm gonna have fun . If there was no reason , I have better clothes to go out , I don't rly want to cosplay randomly o-o

I'd only ever wear a costume for kicks.
So instead of wearing an Itachi costume, I'd instead be wearing something like a breathalyzer costumer with a blowing straw in the crotch area.
Even then, walking around like that alone is a bit sad imo.

Your bus buddy was probably going to a cosplay/anime meet or a con or something.

I would do this 'cause I've already gone out in public in cosplay when I go to cons and stuff because it's easier to get changed at home/the hotel than it is to get changed in a public bathroom. I honestly don't care what people think about it, to me being dressed up as some game character is no different from when I used to go out in public after stage performances still in costume.

However I wouldn't cosplay in public for no reason.
