Joe really likes to act like a douchebag : / Wonder if spending time in jail will fix that bad attitude of his.

Gosh this series has took a turn so early that I certainly wasn't expecting lol. Y'know I never even read the synopsis of this series properly before giving it a try. It's stated in the opening paragraph for this that he goes to the juvenile detention center, I didn't even know that.

I picked it up because It was linked from Hajime no Ippo which I loved. This is definitely something different and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I'm glad they showed Joe breaking down in the van, such a small yet incredibly important scene showing a little more to his character than the swaggering attitude.
the official MAL hall of fame/cursed comments is now open for business - you are welcome to PM me any potential quotes to include

Hajime no Ippo was inspired by this, actually. Also, I saw that you rated Matsutarou a 1, which surprised me because it's from the same mangaka as this is. Very similar, also.

Vengeance of everyone's grudge.

The portrayal of Joe's character is actually very accurate as it pertains to foster children/orphans. I don't know if the author did it on accident or if he really studied these kinds of children, but it's doing a great job with the portrayal so far. Obviously, Joe does feel emotions and have feelings, but the way he expresses it and interacts with people is going to be different from other people with different backgrounds. It's not just that he has a "swaggering attitude", it goes much deeper.

Anyways, I'm loving Joe's character and I feel for him. I really hope he does eventually get rehabilitated, and by rehabilitated, I don't mean changing his personality, I mean fixing the brokenness inside and becoming a bit more mature. He's a very troubled kid

Excellent episode, it's good to see Joe being the smug asshole again...I wonder if he will finally get his ass handed in this new place nicknamed ''hell'' itself. Enjoying this show so far.

Deprived of love and a normal life, he hides his insecurities by acting cool or strong. He doesn't want to seem weak or rely on others because he never has and it will take lots of time and effort to get him to open up... something like that. Not all that hard to portray I think. He's a highly independent individual that keeps his emotions to himself.

What I like is that subtle expressions and gestures are shown. Joe cares and he probably does feel bad, but the way he expresses it is that he tries to brush it off. Like when Sachi threw her shoe, he tried to play it off cool, but he still said it was for her sake. (So he doesn't get more shoes thrown at him when Sachi's upset.)

I'm betting Joe's going to learn a tough lesson at the island...

I'm amazed by this so far, I wasn't expecting Joe to be written so realistically, this series is surprisingly watchable as well for something so old and you can see it's pretty well directed too.

Boy, Joe is really crazy, but slowly I'm starting to understand him and his hate a little bit more.

Seems like the place where he and Nishi are heading to is a notorious prison, maybe Joe will start to change during his year there, at least that's what I'm hoping for, cause his person is starting to annoy me.

I do not think Joe is a bad person, he just has to realize some things. By the way, that phrase Joe says at the end of the episode fits perfectly with someone like him.

Joe doesn't seem to understand that his actions affect other people, especially those who are close to him. I can understand him though, he fears compulsion, since freedom has always been the only thing he's had in his life. Survive, Joe.

Even at his trial he acts cocky and arrogant and caring for no one but himself.

Even Nishi is afraid.

The scene where Joe laughs reminded me of Death Note when Light reveals he was Kira

1 year and 1 month is too long, but if Danpei sends him more letters with boxing techniques, I think it will be more pleasant for him

Joe really gets on my nerves. But I still care for this dude. That scene where he just broke down crying... that got me, man. I want him to finally turn a new leaf. I want him to finally fall for boxing. I hope this Special Juvenile Detention Center will help him develop his character.

he might seem super arrogant but he just wants to live life his way, respect that.. the number of times he rejected old man and he is still obsessed, i find it pathetic

So a juvenile delinquent home is a high security prison and juvenile hall is an ultra high security prison full of cold blooded murderers?
This is a bit ridiculous.

Also I'm kind of confused about how old Joe is supposed to be, wasn't it said he was in his early 20s in the first episode or did I imagine that?
I do remember the first episode opened with a bunch of places refusing him special treatment because he "is an adult" and being told that he was acting pathetic "for an adult" though.

Just to be clear though I don't hate the anime, I'm actually enjoying it so far.
