Someone is clearly on a path towards insanity...

It seems the Arneis situation will be resolved in the next two chapters.

Saw that coming but poor Arneis for going through another ordeal of losing her child. Thorfin will probably reunion with Canute before he gets identified and leave the place.

Yea. While she did play a part to get herself in this state knowingly, surviving might be too harsh for her now that the only thing that kept her living was forcefully taken away. I won't be surprised if she contemplates suicide.

I guess I wish she found the strength to survive.

Why the fuck do people hate character development? Farmland Saga was great. You can't carry longboats and slaughter enemies all the time...
The character development alone makes this arc amazing, not to mention the art progression and the faithful illustration of everyday hardships.

Ketil has changed to the point of being almost unrecognizable. Arnies betrayal had shifted him from the state of depression and hopelessness to pure rage.

The panel with him drawing the sword from it Sheath with the reflection of his expression full of anger and resolve is extraordinary.

I never said it was bad...i just find it somewhat forgetable....the pace of releases was making it painful to follow and character development is around zero as thorfin didnt really change after spending so much time in the farm..maybe a little but only in the last 2-3 chapters

Can anybody tell me what the letters on the sword were? It looked Germanic, and I don't really get it...
"Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love."

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."

You obviously didn't pay much attention then.
The whole so called farmland saga had a huge Thorfinn's (and not only) character development. He's nothing like that kid he used to be before. Since the beginning of this farm/slave arc we saw Thorfinn slowly changing (one of the biggest step forward in his development was when he accepted his guilt for all those past killings). How from an "empty", revenge obsessed kid he changed into a human with strong emotions and feelings. The "old" Thorfin didn't care about anything/anyone. Remember that part when a woman was about to be raped and he just passed by? Would a "new" Thorfinn do that? He stood up against Snake for Arneis and her husband's sake even though he knew that won't end good for him. It's just a small glimpse at how much Thorfinn's character changed. And it definitely didn't took him 2-3 chapters.

The inscription was "Ulfberht", a name that can be found on a lot of swords during the 8th - 11th century. Historians think it was the name of a famous craftsman who founded some kind of sword label. Only quality steel for Ketil, it seems.

Who says Farmland Saga is over? It's still going on!
Thorfinn and Einar are still slaves. Ketil's farm is still running.
Just because things are starting to boil doesn't mean Farmland Saga is over.
We haven't even reached the climax of this arc--that being Canute taking
over Ketil's farm. That has been foreshadowed for a LONG time.

You can't have the bang without the build up. All the "boring" parts of Farmland Saga is the build up. Though I don't consider them boring at all. Einar is too awesome.

I mean would we give a crap about Arneis unless we spend so much time with her?

Without the build up, all the characters would feel flat and the drama would feel forced. Sure we would still get good action but it would feel empty.

One reason why I love all of Farmland Saga is because I trust the author.
I trust that the author isn't egging me on and WILL lead us to badassery.
He has before. The Rise of Canute Arc had a bunch of build up.
We had deal with Canute BEFORE he took a level in bad ass.
Canute was a total sissy before.

NOW HE'S KING AND TAKING NAMES...AND WHEAT!

Respect the wheat.

As for when Farmland Saga truly ends?

I say after the resolution of Canute's attack.

Most likely this will lead to what I've been waiting for:

This!

Of all the arcs in the manga so far, the farm arc is the one where Thorfinn gets the most development. In volumes 1-8 that many people seem to prefer, Thorfinn was just a grumpy killing machine, and his character was the same and unaffected by those around him until he was sold as a slave.

Back onto this chapter, poor Arneis. It was tragic that she lost her son, her freedom and the man that she loved. All women beaters should be dealt with :X

Going by historical facts, I anticipate everything will work out to Canute's favor in the end. It would be cool though if Iron Fist Ketil ended up being a true story, and, as hopeless as it may seem, he'll end up putting up a good fight to the death.

I see Vinland Saga as showing Thorfinn's life in three parts:
Childhood before revenge, Teenager during revenge, Adulthood after revenge.

As a child Thorfinn was innocent and happy.
As a teen Thorfinn was angry and bitter.

Teenage Thorfinn had a very one track mind--kill Askeladd.
But he could never succeed because his idea of revenge was
too childish. He thought all he had to do was train and get stronger
so he could one day best Askeladd. But it doesn't work like that.
No matter how much Thorfinn tries he's simply no match for Askeladd
who is really only "fighting" Thofinn because it amuses him.
Askeladd tells Thorfinn how to REALLY get revenge and it's
nothing like the honorable fantasy Thorfinn imagines for himself.
Then later with Askeladd's death Thorfinn's world shatters again.

Now as an adult Thorfinn learns understanding and acceptance
he knows that being a "grumpy killing machine" will lead him nowhere
and so he tries to be a pacifist instead but I think he knows that won't
work either. He knows the world is too ugly. So now he's trying to find
that balance which I think will lead him to become a True Warrior
like his father Thors the Troll.

Leif was right. Thorfinn has grown up and I'm glad.

Now set sail for Vinland!

Another great chapter. I hope Arneis didn't lose the baby there.

Is not Arnies betrayal that put him in this state but the king coming to take his fortune. If he wasn't amazingly stressed knowing the king will come to take his land he wouldn't even hit Arneis this badly.

Ketil's a scumbag, beating a woman that way and screaming about thieves while getting his fake Ulfberht, and it almost certainly is a fake, as the originals were made out of imported springy monosteel, and would not chip like the one in his hands.
