https://www.khara.co.jp/2025/12/11/251211/

director and ceo of khara hideaki anno said all ip rights are transferred to the original creators so this is the reason why studio trigger could make the sequel for panty and stocking and maybe a new anime for gurren lagann in the future too

so thoughts? what are other ip of gainax you want to see more in the future? maybe more gunbuster and diebuster? flcl is impossible since it was sold to production ig

oh god here we go. get ready for endless licensing from western companies to keep milking properties and creators and make infinitely worse versions. just look at FLCL ! this is not good news. it also defeats the idea that anime is art. if you talk about it in terms of "ip" that has "potential" it has the same artistic value as a fucking funko pop.

I don't think I'd like to see any of the original Gainax IP ever revived again, most their stories are beautifully wrapped up and should stay that way.

The last thing I want is anything resembling a Gurren Lagann continuation. That one already hit its peak, crashed through the stratosphere, rewrote the laws of narrative physics, and then ended on a perfectly conclusive note. Please, no more.

"gainax is dead"

More like an end of Anno's veto on Gainax IPs. Tho, I think he did the right thing...look at FLCL's sequels. Or look at another busted Production IG franchise - Ghost In The Shell.

Rights or no rights, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is Hiroyuki Imaishi's child, so an eventual sequel/prequel (about Kamia's father?) belongs to Trigger...tho, I don't think they will do one.
Also I don't think we need more Gunbuster/Diebuster stuff.

The whole point of those 3 was doing homages to old super robot mecha and infusing them with new ideas. Trying to milk the formula yet again is going against the original intent.

One could say the Diebuster already did that, but:
1. Gunbuster was kind of short and left a lot of missed opportunities.
2. You can play with the idea only so few times.

Also SSSS.Gridman did something similar with tokusatsu and personally I wasn't happy with the results.

PS
On the other hand I wouldn't mind a series taking place in the Ouritsu Uchuugun: Honneamise no Tsubasa universe and exploring it. Like not directly related to its story and having different atmosphere. A spy thriller maybe.

@Impala same i do not want a continuation so maybe a spinoff like with different characters can work better

@deg I feel like anything to do with Gurren laggan would be a bad addition, the story ended with both a narrative, character and thematic conclusion, any addition will probably be bad for the thematic aspect or just won't add anything new

@zoomerReviewer
Gainax's nonsense of doing shady work and screwing people over is why the FLCL sequels happened in the first place. Anno wanted to get the rights back to the original creator, but Gainax turned their back on him and went forward with doing sequels without his involvement instead.

Not surprised in the slightest. They've been on a downward trajectory since Anno and Imaishi left.

Could be good, could be bad. I got this off of MSN this AM, so I am a bit late on it, but man the stupid choices made here astound me, as much as the plain bad luck. I think most of the old titles will just hang around, not doing much of anything now.

Didn't realize they hadn't officially dissolved until today. They filed for bankruptcy over a year ago. They haven't made an anime in ages. I personally think it's better to let their works rest rather than try to bring them back from the dead, though.

3hz didn't die, lol, it was just bought by and merged with A1-Pictures.
I'm pretty sure it was mostly the same team that made GGO S2.

@thewiru yes the team moved to on A1 but 3Hz disappeared a distinct business entity as it was absorbed by A1-Pictures. Meaning that 3hz effectively died.

@GX5000 no such law exists, any piece of media past or present can either be improved or ruined.
Entertainment is a luxury not a necessity and copyright law is the only thing that matters in there.
