Although this episode had a lot of hype, it also made me worry about the future of the series...
The first part of the episode is spent bringing back that Momotarou that killed Shiki's father (which was rightfully placed, since later in the episode we can see that Shiki ends up wanting to avenge his father's death, by also protecting Mei), and 2 new Momotarou (c'mon, another female character with that kind of body? I know that the manga is like that, but the anime could always tone the designs down a bit), while explaining better what a Kishin's child really is.
However, that explanation was a bit weird, because they start by saying that Kishin's children actually only appear when Oni are almost extinct (due to the Momotarou), but later on they say that there alive 8 Kishin's children at a time. This implies there are always 8 Kishin's children, which contradicts what they just said. I suppose the idea is that when these children "Spawn", they spawn in groups of 8. For some reason each children has an elemental power. Not going to lie, this elemental power came out of nowhere, and I'm not really sure what they are supposed to do (in the case of Shiki, it's the fire element, and I guess he can put the Momotarou on fire now? But how was he able to destroy the attack that the Momotarou were using against him?), but I'm giving the anime a vote of hope, since they might explain that better some episodes later.
For some moments I thought that Mei would be another Kishin child too, but apparentaly not, she was just there for moral support.
Now, moving to the fighting itself, it was good, and I liked Shiki's development and motives. However, it was not the best executed thing ever, for starters, it was a bit of back and forth of like "Shiki gets destroyed and trapped, it thinks about Mei and how he wants to protect her, uses a powerful technique to escape and counterattack, repeat the cycle". They introduced the whole elemental power for him to counterattack, for him to just lose it shortly after because he was badly injured, but 2 minutes later he gets the power once again, because Mei gave him more strenght (since this cycle had already repeated before).
But I might say it did contribute to the whole drama and tension of the battle, and it's a really common trope in Shounen.
Despite all of this, I really enjoyed the episode, it ended up being one of the most emotional and tense ones, although the Mei's flashbacks with her family felt cheap and didn't had a lot and came with no context whatsoever.
Honestly, I don't even mind the hair color change when Shiki goes into the "Enki" form, since at least it is to a color representative of his element, and it's a really older Shounen trope that I'm glad to see again.
Also, Tsubakiri was a psychotic piece of trash, so I must say it was good to see him get destroyed by Shiki. Shiki took that grim look out of his face rather quickly.
Now, what really made me worry about the future of the anime is the power scalling. I mean, it was already hard enough to belive Shiki was being able to control his blood so well, when in episode 2 it was shown he had 0 control over it, and although we're in episode 10, the anime never spent some episodes in a training arc. If I'm being honest, this whole arc seems to be a bit hasty, it's getting quite serious, when the anime didn't spend any time in setting the world better or giving the MC any time to get better. So now Shiki being able to control his blood so well is a miracle. If that wasn't enough, they decided to make him have this Enki powerup in his like 2nd battle ever. WE'RE ONLY IN EPISODE 10. At this point it seems Shiki is just as powerful as Mudano, since not even Mudano was able to defeat Tsubakiri in the previous encounter, and that's not really good for the anime. It's giving me Naruto Shippuuden vibes in that regard.
Maybe Tsubakiri isn't still dead, but still, for someone who had 0 training, and couldn't even control his blood in episode 2, this seems to be excessive. This could have been easily resolved, if he just went into his Oni mode, but I suppose that would bring other problems, considering what Mudano said in episode 2.
Anyways, why is the opening of this anime not more popular? Like, I mean, SO FAR FROM WHO I WAS. |
