Can you separate the author from their work?

A couple of days ago, after many years, I finally bought my old favorite GG Reload on steam and remembered how over the past few years I went from completely simping over Ishiwatari to being quite critical of him. Thinking about it while playing, I came up with the idea for this topic. So here it is. Are you able to separate the artist from the art and do you even pay attention to the author of the original work or those who worked on the adaptation? Have there been any instances where the author's personality or actions have significantly impacted your experience with the title?

Yes, i can easily do that, i don't care what horrendous things the author might do as long as i enjoy their art and even if i don't like their art i don't care either way. Take Nobuhiro Watsuki and Kenya Suzuki for example, they were both caught with CP, i really don't care about it and i don't even like rurouni kenshin but i enjoy galko chan, but that doesn't reduce my interest of love for that work. People are weird and as soon as you accept that, it become easy.

I don't do that, a work is a piece of its creator, I can continue to appreciate the work and know where it came from.

the work directly subtly comes from the author's inner world, if he is psychotic pedo then his work will be same aka madoca magica and corpse party yume nikki etc

I don't really care about the original creator, if they did something bad and the art is still good i enjoy it. The only exception is straight up stealing without consent, i wont support that.

I think there are some more cases where the author of certain Manga got arrested, resulting in a stop of an adaption. And there was a case where a va had an affair and couldn't get jobs (roles) after the affair came to light.

With enough money you can. Like this:

"I like that picture you painted."
"Nice, isn't it?"
"How much?"
"I don't know man, I'm not sure I want to be separated from it."
"$500?"
"Deal."

Yes without a problem, as I've mentioned in another thread similar/identical to it. I don't care about the artist when I am rating the art. Like I do like the paintings of the III Reich leader [Adolf] or the performance of the USRR Red Army's Alexandrov Ensemble etc.

For anime and stuff I rarely follow any kind of news so I wouldn't even know about any bad stuff about the people in the industry.

Yes, I don't even care to the author of the work most of the time.

No, never. That's why I never look up any information about the production staff or VAs. I don't care about that kind of stuff anyway, so that helps, but the less I know about the background or history the better. I just want to enjoy the show on its own merits.

Yes, my favorite author is H.P. Lovecraft. This guy considered my race (Mediterranean) less than animals, i don't give a shit about his opinions.

There is also the Made in Abyss guy, i don't care about his hobbies either.

It isn't really possible to not do it and read stuff, even just not reading from antisemitic people will deny many classics sadly
But you shouldn't just ignore when problematic (for a lack of a better word) stuff appears in a story, you should be able to criticise it while still thinking the rest is good enough to enjoy it

Criminals should go to prison, hate speech and hateful people need to be called out but if those people made stories that you love, you shouldn't pretend they are not because the author is bad, you should recognise that the author is bad but why should you care? It's the art and artistic ability that you are a fan of, not the person

And by the name of arceus, don't call people names because of a show they like!

If I enjoyed an author's previous work and then found out they were an awful person, I would probably still enjoy the old works. However I would probably not enjoy their new works. i.e. JK Rowling or Scott Adams

No, not really. A creator has influence on their work and no matter how hard you try and pretend they aren't there you can still kind of see it if you know a lot about them. In some cases this can be really interesting like with how Hirohiko Araki gives some of his characters elements of himself (with Johnny having a very infamous oddly specific example of this in Steel Ball Run) or how some authors like Akira Toriyama took their disdain for some things happening in the world around them to create their story with him using his frustration about real-estate speculators during the Japanese economic bubble to create Freeza. However it definitely becomes difficult when a creator does something morally reprehensible as it can make some questionable elements feel a bit more uncomfortable in hindsight (like with Rowling with Harry Potter making some of the mean-spirited shit more obvious or Dan Schneider with iCarly and Victorious having the obsession with feet come off a lot more gross to name a few examples). Even if you like content from a creator who did something bad, pretending they didn't have an influence on their own work is very silly as each artist will inherently have a part of themselves left behind in their works

I don't really pay attention to an author's personal life and care more about their work so yeah I can separate them from their work.

Honestly, no, I don't care who creates the works I enjoy, and won't unless I somehow become aware that same creator is responsible for multiple works I like. In that case the only thing that happens is I try their other works.

If they're somehow a terrible person in real life (allegedly), in most cases that has nothing to do with what they write and whether or not it's good.

Yes, it's possible. To quote Kaiki (stole this from reddit):

"We aren't characters in a manga... there's no human who is all bad. There's no human who is all evil. No one has the same personality when viewed from all angles, and no one has the same personality at all times. You're good at running, but you don't run every single instant, do you? You walk, and you sleep. It's the same thing. I love money, but I also use that money. Sometimes, I might be kind to someone, even if I have no particular reason to be. "

Oshiete Galko-chan is a fun short anime that explores topics the majority of anime won't touch upon (do girls have butt hair?) and so on. The author was unfortunately arrested for suspicion of trying to import books containing the images of naked underage girl. He's a criminal, sure, but that doesn't change the face he made an interesting manga with lovable characters.

I can separate, I am reading Act Age sometimes and plan to watch Toriko. But gluing author has a lot of advantages. There are the authors you can like their actions as an extra, Sorachi roasting fan letters is a high point for me of Gintama. Discovering that it was Shin Kibayashi all along. Or even reading the mini diaries some authors put as extras.

Rurouni Kenshin is betterwith the author actions. It is full of messages of penitance, carrying guilty til death, penitance, surviving, vows of doing the right thing from now on. And reading people on forums saying "I liked it, but after what he did I hate it", "He ruined the work," "I still like the work, but the author", "It is so disgusting I hope his carreer ends". Gives Kenshin issue so much more weight. And morality dilema.
