Obviously Reiko wants to get to the truth about Kujirai B. Yaomei's character story and personality change was interesting to note this episode, especially after seeing those movie tickets in hand. Seems that she had some personal demons to deal with.

This show does a neat job at getting me invested into cast, beyond just the main leads. The mystery aura still feels like it's here.

Aaaand… that cliffhanger from last episode meant nothing. As if it wasn’t already obvious enough lol. Though what this series has taught has, anything or any possibility is likely, as you know all the stuff keeps happening within these walls after all. In between all of this, I kind of feel for Reiko, I mean she knows she isn’t the “real” Reiko Kudou likes or is that Reiko, she’s supposed to be living as, but hey, see how far just seeking validation from someone pushes you to.

Leaving all of this aside, we know they’re covering one volume with every episode or at least that’s what they want, and that ain’t no breaking news anymore. Though I haven’t gone back and checked if they’re actually doing that with every episode, but yeah, one thing which I do think they did right this episode was showing Yaomei’s past. You see, they skipped over a LOT of her and Reiko’s interactions and all of that time they spent together, so at least giving Yaomei a background would help establish her as a character which is NEEDED around Reiko, and to help uncover the mystery around this Kowloon as well.

I was waiting for that last scene and yeah, that should give some kind of answer for the time being... I mean not everybody being able to see this Kowloon walled city that is.

They HAVE TO STOP WITH THESE CLIFFHANGERS!! Looks like a theory I had is all but confirmed at this point, but the reasoning behind it is still unclear. On the other hand, I LOVE the Yaomay focus in this episode. Koga Aoi has been killing this role and she’s so fun, but I knew she was hiding a deep pain and I loved seeing that explored today and her getting even closer with Reiko!

Still think Yaomay is gay af for Reiko, I love how protective she is of her and how she went on the bookstore trip with Kudo and Reiko to make sure he didn’t hurt her πŸ˜‚ and the way she got upset every time Kudo said anything remotely out of line to Reiko lol. Every girl needs a girlfriend like that.

Her attachment to Reiko isn’t just yuri vibes though, learning about how controlling her mom was and how trapped she felt in her previous life makes the plastic surgery comment from last week’s ep make sm more sense. I thought she’d just had it for vanity, but that’s what I get for assuming. Turns out she just needed to rebrand and escape her mom’s control. “I’m going to be my absolute self too” 😍 Kinda wish she would’ve let Reiko see her true appearance though!

Okay that post credits scene is wild and confirms that Gene Terra is likely some illusion creating machine/science experiment by that big company. I feel like everyone’s just clones of previous Kowloon residents? That explains the old man showing up last week despite already being there πŸ€” but we could also be seeing multiple timelines too.. idk confusing but I need answers lol.

Public Service Announcement: there's a meaty 3-minute scene after the ED!
-----

Upset Yaomei sure sounds like Shinomiya Kaguya throwing a tantrum..

Loved the music in the scene when Reiko was talking to Yaomei through the door. Was that a theremin? Or some kind of Chinese instrument, I wonder.

Great scene, too, even if the whole arc felt very accelerated.

Yaomei looking unrecognizable from her previous self really speaks volumes about how trapped she felt in her old life.

And wow, the reveal of present day Kowloon's true state sure leaves an impression.

Yaomei's past caught up to her, emotional distress weighting her down, luckily she has Reiko to remind her about herself, the true self.

P.S:

Anyone else gets "Dark City" vibes from this anime? In both works a dense, enclosed city that seems almost timeless or detached from reality and hyper-stylized urban spaces filled with secrets.. A heavy emphasis on memory, identity, and the nature of reality.
Love the slow enfolding mystery they are going for.

Fan of the social commentary in this series.

While it's tempting to get rid of some imperfections, I would never change my looks dramtically since I like who I am. Tho I can see why Yaomei would do that since she could never be herself in the first place. Also liked how we her lines from last episodes got recontextualized here.

episode 1/5

The suspense break was terrible... besides the atmosphere of this anime, there is nothing more interesting about it, episode 4 was the only one that was good enough to bring a "starting point" to this extremely disjointed anime with vague motives. Were all those scenes and situations created in episode 4 for nothing??? This anime is really disappointing, when I think it's getting good, the anime goes there and becomes shit after one episode again

So much packed into one episode and this thing just gets curiouser and curiouser...
Not how I pictured Yaomay to really look.
What was up with that book not being complete?
So wait it's all in his head? Is he making the earthquakes?

I guess Gene Terra didn't torrent the second book.

Hebinuma as shady he is, he is nice, by going "You are beautiful the way you are, but work is work."

Yaomei past appearance is just "Wow"

Great episode again!

The first part is about the blonde's identity, really, with her childhood traumas from a domineering mother.
The second, after the ending, those earthquakes—strange, aren't they?

After being really sucked into the first three eps but then feeling a bit annoyed by the fourth (especially the cliffhanger), particularly when this episode opened with showing it meant absolutely nothing, it did start to reel me back in a little by the end. I enjoyed Yaomay's story and the post-credits scenes brought some juicy questions.

I'm interested in the implication the city may be partly maintained by Kudo's mind. Is he unaware of that, and his dream was him beginning to awaken to the realization, with the earthquakes signifying the mindscape is becoming unstable? & what was up with the book, especially when considering the previous implication?

I'm not sure if this makes sense but maybe Reiko can't see the ending of the book because she stopped Kudo from spoiling it, which for some reason was the only way she was ever going to learn? Or maybe Kudo spoiled the book for Reiko B in the past, and so she didn't end up finishing it, which because of some reason(s) regarding how Kowloon and/or Reiko herself work, means Reiko has no access to that "memory"? That is, she's doomed to only be able to live remixes of the life Reiko B lived, and since Reiko B didn't finish the book ours can't. I'm probably wrong but who knows!

I guess Gene Terra didn't torrent the second book.

Ok, that is much more simple and sensible. I do not consider the giant sci-fi satellite looming above them at all times enough when thinking things over.

This adaptation would benefit a lot with a slower pace. Many plot points, especially in this episode lacks the impact it could've had were we given the time to dwell on things before the next scene. Despite the strong writing overall leading up to the climax of Yaomay's arc, it feels glossed over in this episode over how quick things were moving when it could've been a good Yaomay-center episode the way it was set up to be just begging for a Dandadan episode 7 direction treatment.

Having first watched episodes 4 & 5 one after the other I feel this show will flow better watched in a binge. Yes, it is still a bit dreamesque in how disjointed the scenes are, almost like a simulation. But the information is often presented only once, excluding Yaomei dialog recap, and recalling small details will likely be a part of fully soaking in the plot.

I guess we're disregarding Kudo's confession for now, huh. Well in any case we got to see more about Yaomay here with her past as an actress and how everything was decided for her. That explains how she was so board Reiko's dilemma about being her own self. Oh, and that phrase "when you're given something it means something else was taken back" pretty deep if you ask me, at least depending on the way you interpret it.

Almost half way through.

Well, I guess I know who the actress was in the film was, now don't I? I guess her Mother didn't give her a choice & made her into a Child Star. Seems to have left Yaomei with a huge amount of trauma.

Kudo being too funny:

Yaomei:

My thoughts:

It's getting even more weirder. Now we have earthquakes in a Kowloon that no longer exists, but that only some can feel? And they're probably happening because of Kudo having bad dreams? My mind can't work on weekends, come on!

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

Now I wonder if Kujirai B had romance with Kudou and Gwen in the same time. Is it crime story?

Also are all those books exists irl? I found there is anime "Midnight Detective" about vampire detective who hasn't memory of his past.

Maybe Kujirai B cut her memories on purpose because she wanted to be a new person like Yaomei?

Last scene is absolutely epic.

Yeah nah, this is stuffing in way too much too fast, so I don’t really care about what’s going on. It doesn’t let things slow down or explain stuff when it should, so the big twists don’t hit that hard.

And it already burned through a bunch of important moments way too early. Kinda sucks honestly.

A really good episode.

Turns out the cliffhanger from last episode meant nothing and was just to keep the viewers watching. I honestly thought that Kudo was a bad guy at that cliffhanger. Yaomei's backstory was really interesting. Her personality changed a lot as soon as those tickets were shown. I had a feeling she was hiding something behind that smile. I still don't understand the Gene Terra yet, it's so mysterious and that just makes me want to watch more of this anime.

Cliffhanger AGAIN, damn.

so what's with the ending? it was the old city or it was just an illusion? I am a little confused

last ep's cliffhanger turned out to be a misdirect, nothing came with it.. but I am still wondering about the whole setting of this "world"

So yaomei can change her look just like that? she was blonde and then she has black hair, then she turned back again

Yeomei is such a great friend and well written character!

She doesn’t always agree with Reiko, especially when it comes to chasing Kudou’s love and approval, but she still stands by her and genuinely wants her to find happiness.

It really reminded me of how I’ve felt in the past when I didn’t approve of someone my friends started dating.

I also appreciate that Yeomei isn’t just there to play the “best friend” trope. she has her own backstory and motivations that shape how she reacts to everything. It’s not JUST that she’s supporting Reiko, but that this situation is triggering her.

Poor Yaomei… Her mother basically stole her identity by trying to mold her into a clone of herself. At least she has Kujirai—like that one friend who just goes along with your villain arc no matter what. Honestly, if Yaomei said, “I’m going to conquer the world,” Kujirai would probably just reply, “Sure, but can we eat dinner first?”

And another CLIFFHANGER—damn, they won’t even let me finish processing my theories from last week!
Still, with this latest twist, I think it might confirm that this Kowloon is actually the one from 1994… And maybe, just maybe, what we’re seeing is a simulation after all. I’m so lost right now, and I love it.
