Parchment was expensive so they had to find ways to write more on less material. This is how we ended up with ñ (two Ns one on top of the other), ä, ö and ü (the two dots started out as an e), & (E and t), œ (believe it or not this was actually an a and an e as evidenced by cœlestius for Caelestius and cœlorum for caelorum). |
