Isn't shortening a word and using it as slang antithetical to tradition? If you were truly "trad," you would just say traditional.

In a way, yes but "traditional" is not traditional Enough. Need to revert to speaking Proto Indo European.

I agree, we need to stop using abbrs if I do say so myself.

Speaking of tradition, shortening a word is a thing since at least Medieval times, which is why Medieval Latin is harder than Classical one.

Language constantly evolves. No one is 100% traditional, if they were they'd be off the internet.

Shortening words is part of tradition though.

Yup. Parchment was expensive so they had to find ways to write more on less material.
This is how we ended up with ñ (two Ns one on top of the other), ä, ö and ü (the two dots started out as an e), & (E and t), œ (believe it or not this was actually an a and an e as evidenced by cœlestius for Caelestius and cœlorum for caelorum).

Shortening words IS traditional.
People stopped saying "pantaloons" in the 19th century and shortened it to "pants".

I kind of disagree, The Jews used YHWH instead of uttering the whole name.

Shortening isn't old

Congratulations on exposing the hypocrisy of the trad movement.
