Damn, they're really giving a lot of pressure and responsibility to Yumiko. From a psychological standpoint, I almost feel bad for her but it's kinda common in these type of anime.

Yumiko and Chika's relationship dynamics are still interesting to see, even in the finale. Hoping that they both overcome their personal demons.

Sato's VA work is most pivotal in a series where her character is king for one of the show's most important make-or-break episodes, and her beng criticized formally, she's put in a position to deliver her very best for her own finale.

Sound director Sugishita understands this, though he encourages Sato to not give into pressure. The week passes by with time, but Sato willingly begrudges herself from within to deliver expectations, she starts to falter, leading Sugishita and his sound engineer to recap the VA casting, which thankfully they obliged to stay longer and help Sato get over her lines. The talk with Chika previously about going on hiatus, the same thing is happening to Sato having to re-record post-recordings for umpteen times.

Sugishita still seeing a sign of potential within Sato, but she's already hit her limit to the point that she could get replaced easily...which is exactly part of the unfortunate fate of the anime industry in general being a brutalist to recruit people who can adapt on the go and kick out others who are stuck in their own rut. And even though Sato did shine in her first work of Plastic Girls which got her signed to her Choco Brownie's manager Kagasaki, Sato in her young days was kicking alive in both energy and enthusiasm, but reality is not kind to her offering both valid and not so valid criticisms, which got worse as she descends into voice acting work, where everything else after that is history.

Ironically enough, Sato SHOULD be asking Chika for help, whether rivals or not, and this is the first time that she humbles herself towards her partner after building walls against her relentlessly. Sure, Sato's personality may not suit Chika, but the latter is willing to help the former ascend to great heights, and that's what makes their personal and private relationship work.

Sato, be on a roll with Chika.

Yumiko is really being put under pressure with her voice acting and you can tell she is trying so hard to do her best. It was a good idea to reach out to chika and ask for her help.

The director (in the story) isn’t doing their job properly if they’re not helping their actor with non-specific criticism and advice when they can see she’s clearly struggling

These girls are so gay man. That final scene just pushed home the fact.

Finale would be exciting, at least I would hope.

I think the fundamental problem with the show (a problem that it inherited from the source material) is that it starts off with a solid concept and tone that we actually want to watch and then spirals by going massively heavy handed on the realism and honestly the show is so dark (tone wise) and that makes it hard to stomach watching. What was so wrong about doing a slice of life yuri about two young voice actresses? We don’t need to be traumatized by this dark realism

I'm getting stressed out watching this show. I hate underperforming when I feel like I'm doing my best. I also probably would be too prideful to ask my "rival" for help too. Yasumi has a lot more guts than me, hopefully she can learn enough from Yuhi to nail the focus episode.

My main criticism for this whole arc really is it's a lot of telling not showing, and even then sometimes it won't even do any telling. How is her acting bad? What does she need to do better? We have no idea and neither does she because no one seems to want to tell her either. It was like 3 weeks in a row of her "training" in between either being criticized or praised for something we don't get to actually hear.

I swear if this drops below a 7 after the final episode. I’m gonna be so annoyed. Pound for pound most underrated this season.

It’s so hard seeing Yasumi struggle like this and I don’t think the actress at the start of the episode who put all that pressure on her about the next episode did the right thing.. like Yasumi is literally in hs and in the biggest acting role of her life, clearly struggling and you say some “yea no big deal but the fate of the series kinda depends on you” 💀

Now I will praise the cast mates for not complaining about staying later to help Yasumi re record her lines. With all the pressure she’s under the last thing she needs is people getting upset with her about mistakes. BUT the one thing that’s making no sense to me is what exactly she’s doing wrong.

Like the director keeps complaining about her acting, but what’s she doing wrong and how can she fix it? This whole production is a nightmare because they didn’t even give her the script till last minute now they’re bitching about every mistake she’s making without even being constructive.

Yasumi’s flashback to how she got started as a seiyuu really got me in the feels and reminded me a lot of Chizuru and her grandmother’s arc from the latest season of kanokari. I hate that Yasumi’s grandma didn’t get to see her become a Pritia, but at the same time I sensed nothing but love and pride from her grandmother about seeing her granddaughter pursuing her passion. She would be very proud of Yasumi and continue to encourage her now.

“Even for the sake of my acting I could never be as earnest as you” 😢 beautiful final scene there between Yasumi and Yuhi. They’re so gay 😩 need the confession in the finale. Now that her biggest rival and fan is gonna critique her, I think Yasumi will be fine and deliver the performance of a lifetime in the finale. Can’t wait

I mean you can go watch or read other stories like that? This is the tone the author wanted for this story lol. Everything isn’t sunshine and rainbows irl.

I don't mean for you to fold under pressure so here's a mountain of more pressure.
"At least they're killing off your character so we'll all be relived and you'll be free."
"Those who half-ass their jobs will only have hentai roles waiting for them."
Wow! Why are co-workers so harsh!?

Extrovert gyaru gushes over magical girls but it leads her down a very different path.

Anemic introvert wants to pay extrovert gyaru back for all the titty energy she absorbed from her. It's going to be an all-nighter/girls' party/epic training montage. By the time they're done they'll have eyes as baggy and alluring as workaholic.

Well, at least it wasn't as overdramatic as i was afraid it would have turned out. Criticism above is still valid and it was almost given for granted that her grandmother wouldn't have survived long enough to see her niece succeed, but season finale is going to be interesting.

v (the prequels are still good)

vv that Simpsons meme was bound to exist and i approve

Like god dam way to put hella pressure on Yumiko a teenage girl bro. Like dam I know its important but dam try tone it down a little. Mad props to Yumiko for reaching out to Chika for help. Yumiko's definitely wrong though there's no way Chika doesn't get insecure about her own acting at times like Yumiko does.

and yeah there's definitely a gap between the 2 but I feel like Yumiko really undersells herself.

  • The first half of the episode felt so meta, notably with lines such as:

    "You are the main character"
"But the next episode, you are the star"
"I'm really looking forward to your performance next week"
"The next episode is truly important"

  • The impression I'm getting with the voice director is that he took to heart what George Lucas once said in a featurette for one of the Star Wars prequels: "[The actors] give you performance. You talk about what you want to happen. And then you do another take. And then you talk again. And then you just keep going through it until you get the way you want it." With how the acting generally turned out in the Star Wars prequels, a director must do more than what Lucas said.

  • Surprised to see Yasumi's backstory this late in the game.

  • With Yasumi finally asking Yuuhi for help, I wonder if the performance that's expected in Phantom is actually that of their typical rivalry mode.

Well, there goes another episode of Yasumi being shit but also refusing to ask for help from the one person she knows she should ask for help. It was especially obvious how it would go when it skipped to the day of the recording. At least she eventually figured it out.

Also, they say they hate each other a lot, but it doesn't really feel like they do. I can understand finding Yasumi's feigned confidence annoying though.

You know, i cant help but think - Yasumi plays a dark and evil character, right? Maybe all the pressure on her is the director’s idea (or even a conspiracy of the entire group) so that she can convey the character’s despair and anger? Many film directors do such things to actors.

Also i liked the moment with flashback, its interesting thoughts about youth and energy that fades over time and that sad moment with Yasumi's grandmother.
And that VHS filter with noise is really aesthetical thing, i like this style, wish they use it more often in anime.

im kind at a loss here. this feels kinda pointless to focus on so much. maybe its for the two to get closer by yuhi helping her but unless we get a second season it wont matter.
next ep is the last one. i can safely guess that through yuhis help and some miracle yasumi surpises everyone at the studio and then it ends. if thats how it goes and we dont get a second season then i cant rate this that highly. its labeled as girls love and the source does apparently have GL but so far this has barely even been yuri bait
checking mal again and it seems that the GL tag was removed. maybe they realized that at least in the first season there wont be much of it

Man, next Wednesday arrives soon, I'm very tense man, how are they going to resolve the dubbing of Phantom, I want it to arrive soon, just one thing, this anime is great for creating moments of distress and distrust, it's a shame that it's ending but it was It's a privilege to see this work of art

I'm very torn on this whole arc - like, it's been technically good, the writing is good and so is the voice acting. Though the latter is part of the problem - Yasumi's voice acting has been pretty good, at least what we've heard of it. It's the same problem with band anime, where the songs the characters play sound too professional for who they are because the people behind them are professionals. Yasumi's voice acting sounds, to me at least, perfectly acceptable for the role she's playing... because the voice actress behind her is good! And it's kinda taking me out of the drama of the story.

Hmm, feels like they are rehashing drama of her not doing well in the show. I mean I get it, but I also actually disagree with the director even if he is trying to be nice. Be specific on what you want her acting to be.

In addition, I strongly disagree with the show's idea that a Seiyuu can make a show suffer for its quality. I never see it even if consensus claims there is an annoying voice, that to me is just a miscast of the seiyuu and squarely lies on the director. A seiyuu can boost a bad anime, I mean look at Kaminaki, but I will never fault a Seiyuu for a bad show. That is on the animators, on the writing and the directors.

Ugh why are they rehashing this old conflict? Is the VA director(?) so incompetent that she had to get advice from Yuhi? Not that that's a bad thing, but this show seems to conflate her problems to make artificial drama. It's kinda degrading to both the VA director and herself, in that he wasn't able to give proper voice direction, and if he apparently did offscreen, Yasumi failed to learn the lesson from before.

I love these gals man, but the plot kinda weighs them down.

Good episode indeed. I think they did a really good job at showing what happens when you reach your breaking point trying to impress. Poor Yasumi straight up having a panic attack there.

Loved that scene at the end with Yasumi and Yuuhi. She said the line, and then gave Yasumi a confidence boost too, awesome to see!

Next episode is the last one, I sure hope they're gonna end this show well!

Really felt it for our heroine this episode. Why are they putting so much pressure on her? Like she doesn't know it's her last appearance and it's an important episode. The fellow seyuus were especially annoying. The first one said that all the eyes are on her, the future of the whole Phantom anime. While the other said "I've seen what happened with those who half-ass their work". Isn't that crazy? I feel like it's normalized in Japan, I don't even know if japanese view this episode and think to themselves "It's normal, Satou is in the wrong for letting them all down". Or if the anime is trying to show how ridicilous they are. Really not sure what the message was. Personally it just made it even more clear how different and toxic Japan work culture is. It's so obvious to me that putting extra pressure on people is not needed, especailly when she herself realizes it. And fine, even if you mention it once, but continiously drilling it into her? No wonder she collapsed to pressure. She probably still will overcome her wall and everything will be resolved, because its anime, but nothing good would come from this in real life.

Poor girl, feeling like she's failing everyone, that she is talentless, terrible, trying hard without seeing any results, and then the reminder on how short on time she is, while she still is fresh blood.
