Personally, I think the anime is a mess. But there are elements that make me believe and think that it might just be a horrible adaptation. So I looked up how the VN is and everything looks better. The characters don't look edgy asf and don't stand out in the most "we are the main characters" way, which they do in the anime.

So the question is, is the VN also bad? Or is it just a terrible adaptation?

VN is always better. Problem is, can you handle the media or not.

As of Dies Irae, Idk. I've seen fans of it that knew it would be a huge mess as soon as it was announced to be 1 cour. Ratings are really high on VNDB, so I'd give it a try.

As is basically always the case, absolutely yes. The anime was heavily under-budget for one which really hurt the animation quality, but more importantly it's just... really poorly explained. Like I can understand what's going on personally, but if you haven't already played the game you'll be missing out on so many things you're supposed to be able to keep track of

I kinda get that feel, that's how I feel right now. Kinda felt like that when I saw the Unlimited Blade Works movie. But I was blown away by the VN

The visual novel is much better apparently, just that the anime explains things badly and for people who do not know the visual novel, they can be quite lost. After I personally find that it's not that bad if we think a little about the events, even if some remain unexplained. For my part I understand the events and those that I do not understand, I will play the visual novel to have a concrete answer, with such budget concerns and a visual novel so long, they could not anyway propose an anime really long.

Obviously, as always....they made it soo ambigous to boost vn sales.

Most anime are always being a media to promote it sources(except original manga)and increase that said source.

I can still follow the whole story of this anime thou even i didnt play the vn. All you had to do is watched all of the episodes for 2 or 3 days, not by seasonal mode.
Plus a big brain

The answer is yes, because the VN is great.

This anime is mainly a series of cool fights loosely tied together by some confused hints at what's actually going on. It's like they didn't even try. Even the Rewrite anime adaptation is better than this, and that one is pretty bad also.

I hate to sound elitist and say "Read the VN". But in this case you really should (provided of course that you have about 80-100 hours to kill).
