I've known the story of Frankenstein for a long time now, but I think this was my first time with a Frankenstein story. One of Junji's best, as his signature art style meets the classic tale of a tragic monster.

Yes, out of the whole collection - Frankenstein was certainly the best story. No wonder, 180 pages made the story much deeper and interactive than the usual standalones.

If it wasn't for completely crappy 2 mini stories - this would certainly be the best volume...

I don't know what the goal of those 2 last chapters was - maybe a little relaxer, eh.

All in all it was a great horror collection, I enjoyed most stories, especially extended storylines, like tomie and intersection pretty boy.

A must read for horror fan, but for casual reader - it will just be above average. Still, I don't think anyone would have problems reading this, it actually didn't pack much punch as a thriller does, the style is rather laid back, so you can enjoy it no matter your tastes.

Pretty good rendition of the original story, more proof that Ito's art carries his work a lot of the time, he really shines when he's working with a story that isn't his own

It had a slow start but it got me hooked once the monster was revived. It was actually my first time reading something Frankenstein-related despite knowing the tale quite well.

The monster made me feel so many different conflicting feelings throughout the story. First he's that tragic creature who just wanted to be loved on one part and he's a douche who kills everyone you love on another. It was naive and tragic for him to think that someone like him will love him instantly without feeling the pain of loneliness and hostility first but storming off to crush what's left of Frankenstein's family and best bro Henry was too much. But in the end, he put Victor in a chase of cat and mouse just to not feel lonely. With the only person who knows what he is gone, no one's left to acknowledge his existence anymore ouch.

Wow... That was something. I have never read Frankenstein before, so this was the first time I was reading the famous tale. And that was a good way to do it, I think. This was probably one of the most enjoyable chapters from Junji, and I will be sure to remember it for a long time.

Damn that was amazing, Frankenstein himself lived a sad life, his own curiosity was his demise, it seems that the monster was somehow linked to Frankenstein, he knew when he died, cruel as he was, it felt sad and lonely once more, forever alone, I wonder if he even has the mental capacity to comprehend the fact that he can die, or better put, end his misery and endless suffering that awaits him, assuming he is Immortal. I really enjoyed reading this.

But just like Frankenstein and everything else, it ends here, with this last story, concludes it all, I have now finished all of the collection, it was quite the journey. I'm really sad that there's no more I can read, for I have read everything. Definitely my favourite Horror mangaka and overall of my favourite mangakas. I will never forget this journey.

An unique retelling of the classic story of Dr. Frankenstein and his creation, with some pretty interesting twists. It was an enjoyable read.

...huh, somehow I spent all my life thinking that the 1931 Frankenstein movie and the many spoofs/adaptations of that version were faithful to the original book...this is literally my first contact with the original version. I'm kinda sad that the original is such a depressing and, well, boring story. I even thought this was Ito's own twist to the original. Welp.

Itou's "Frankenstein" certainly makes for a decent read, but unfortunately his adaptation falls quite flat considering how simple and straigthforward his spin on Shelley's masterpiece is. His interpretative framework of it, I'm afraid, simply avoids all the social questions, issues, and contradictions that helped the novel to quickly become a literary cornerstone of England's Regency Era. The shift in tone and style towards Victorian mysticism, as well as a sociocultural perspective of British society based on a hierarchy of social classes is nowhere to be found in Itou's take on the story. What one may found here is a pleasant, 'by the book' adaptation of the novel of the same name, but one in which the mangaka's postmodernistic approach on horror never truly shines.
