Heh, looks like everything ended well. Most of the main characters made it out alive there. The ED song wraps it up with a sun in the horizons. I couldn't stand some of the drama relating to Yushiro. I watched most of this in dubbed and the voice acting isn't as bad as I had thought. It was actually tolerable.

This episode was Evangelion 25-26 2.0

Idk about this series ,it had a very interesting premise, dialogue and ideas, but overall it felt very dry like it bit more than it could chew.It was almost 2-3 different series crammed into 1 and 25 episode wasn't nearly enough to properly make use of everything that was on display.

For director possessed with realistic military mecha combat, he certainly gives a lot of hippie messages in last episodes of his anime series.

Re-watched: This might be the only anime I've seen where the dialogue is stimulating and interesting on an intellectual level in a way that goes beyond the themes/interior nature of the anime itself. But at the same time, it felt like real dialogue, not the author self-insert bullshit you often see in 'smart' anime, but an actual conversation that is not only relevant to the narrative, but comes alive as if two real people were having a discussion.

Man this show should be rated higher. Totally not for the mainstream maybe but it deserves an audience.

I am glad it didn't go to too far in its Japanese nationalism. There is a tendency to look on the samurai age as some kind of romantic fairy-tale but it was all power-hungry madmen trying to kill each other. I think at one point an Emperor was actually starved to death because he tried to stand up to one of the warlords. And how the US was portrayed as a bully is fair no doubt but they didn't try to make them evil.

Unsure how I feel about the ending...

The Gasaraki were higher beings trying to.. what? I couldn't grasp the meaning.

Still, even with the really slow start and laggy episodes here and there- this show did a great job showcasing human nature and its sad cruelty. It also had an interesting take on overcoming 'fate' or the hand dealt to you.

Best part overall though was the music, and the uneasiness it had.

7/10.

By definition, everything is retro since by the time you realize something has happened it's already in the past.

Essentially from what I could gather, the Gasaraki were
which really ties back into the entire message/themes of this anime.

Really impressed with this series. One of the few anime series that made me "think"

Takahashi goes into pure auteur mode for the ending episode. I loved it even more upon rewatch. What a superbly directed, interesting, and thought provoking anime.

Holy crap, this really was a Metal Gear plot. Well, with more extraterrestrial interference anyways.

Gasaraki was more interesting when it dealt with international politics and the governing of society. The individual dramas and the supernatural were a bit too esoteric and one-dimensional. Nearly all the conflicts of the show could be traced back to Kazukiyo and his god complex, which is not necessarily bad for the show’s villain, but it’s just not as interesting.

In all, I expected a droll story drenched in dramatic monologues and posturing, but Gasaraki was actually better than I was led to believe from its first few episodes. It had many ideas and it didn’t shy away from criticizing real world politics and governing bodies, but I always saw the mecha and supernatural elements as add-ons rather than the core of the show.

The show changed direction... what? 4 or 5 times?

First it starts off action packed, like it's going to be a show like Full Metal Panic where the hero team of mech pilots are going to fight the illuminati.

Then the characters return back to Japan and we start discovering unsavory things about the Gowa family, find out about the coup plot, and find the old mech, so it seems like it's going to be about Yushiro revolting against Gowa and using the ancient mech to fight the fakes and stop the coup.

Then the Americans get involved and the heroes join with the coup plotters, so it seems like the story is going to be about Japan trying to overthrow the American empire.

And then the final episode turns into a rehash of NGE's ending and tries to be all artsy and philosophical.

I think the biggest problem with the show is that after they return to Japan around episode 5 or so, the pacing grinds to a halt. You get like 10 episodes in a row of Yushiro walking around having exposition thrown at his face. Story doesn't pick up again until episode 15 or 17 when he flees and the coup begins. Like a good 70% of the show is boring.

Good stuff. At first I thought it would be classic Takashi but the last episode really felt post-evangelion, but I'd say it ties in pretty well with the political drama and satire (clever parallelisms). I liked it a lot, since it combines all my favourite genres.
