Synopsis of the 52nd chapter of Aoi Hana, "The Final Tale" below the fold:
The chapter starts with Fumi taking a stroll down a road with her new college friend, Akie. The caption reads:"The beautiful crybaby and the reliable spunky girl. The memories, smiles, and tears shared by the two childhood friends. The confession Akira made on the day of her graduation and the ray of hope Fumi keeps in her chest. As the seasons change, what will shine a light on these two girls' future?"
Akie stretches out her arms. "A morning in Kamakura!" They later go back to Fumi's house where her mom starts chatting with Akie.
"Have you always lived in Tokyo, Mori-san?"
"Uh, yes," Akie replies. "I spent my whole life in the crowded, working-class area of the city."
"You were probably surprised at how empty this place is," says Fumi's mom.
"Well," says Akie, "you guys got a lot of tourist spots, so I always have a blast whenever I come here."
The two women later read a wedding invitation from Kyouko. "Ehh? Isn't she a little too young to get married?" Akie exclaims. "I thought she was the same age as us."
"She always had a fiance," Fumi explains.
"A fiance?" asks a dejected Akie. "Argh, I know I shouldn't start worrying yet, but I can't help it!"
We transition to Kyouko and Kou's place where Kyouko is looking silently at her fiance.
"What is it?" asks Kou.
"Are you really sure about this?"
"Why's that? Are you having cold feet, Kyouko?"
"Of course not," says Kyouko. After a brief pause, Kyouko continues. "I've been talking with my aunts. They said my mother really pushed for this."
"She sure did," Kou replies. "It's all thanks to your mother. She said she can't wait to see you walk down the aisle."
We return back to Fumi and Akie: "God, hearing she has a fiance feels like she's living in a different dimension!" says Akie.
"Oh yeah, how are things with your boyfriend," asks Fumi.
"That's all he is, a boyfriend," replies a frustrated Akie. "He won't be thinking about marriage anytime soon."
She raises her head to Fumi, "Come to think of it, we've never had this kind of talk. Is it just not your thing?"
Fumi purses her lips and replies, "It's not that. I've always been in love with a certain someone."
"Ohhh?"
Fumi has a flashback to the time when she made that final confession to Akira on the beach. She thinks to herself, "The power of that spell was so strong... it's still affecting me even as an adult."
We now go to the Sugimoto residence where Yasuko is talking to Kazusa and Kagami-sensei's daughter. "Shiho, you mustn't fall in love with a schoolteacher."
"Why?" asks Shiho. "Daddy's a schoolteacher."
"What did I tell you?" Yasuko prods.
"Whyy?" asks Shiho.
"Oh Yacchan," Shinako purrs. "I'm glad to see you're now strong enough to joke about your chronic illness that was your broken heart."
"Buzz off!"
Chie, the matriarch of the Sugimoto family, stretches out her arms to Shiho: "Shii-chan, come sit on your Grammy's lap!"
Kuri and Kazusa enter the room sniping at each other. "I swear, you three will still be living at home by the time that girl finds a husband," says Kazusa.
"Don't scare me like that!" yells Kuri. She turns to Shinako. "But I can definitely see Shinako-chan turning out that way. It's like she doesn't care if she ends up alone."
"Really?" replies Shinako.
Chie looks up from the picture book she's reading to Shiho. "I'm more worried about you, Kuri. I can see you getting desperate and grabbing the next weirdo that comes along."
"Be quiet!" yells Kuri. She then turns to Yasuko. "So does this mean you're still going to mess around studying abroad? I also hear that your friend is in the hospital with appendicitis, the poor thing." She then points a finger to Yasuko. "And did you hear what she did? She came back from England alone and forced her underclassman to take care of her!"
"No, I did not!" yells Yasuko. "We came here together!"
"So what time is the ceremony tomorrow?" someone asks.
Yasuko searches, "Let's see..."
We're now at the wedding ceremony where Ryouko meets the three former Matsuoka girls.
"Ah, Ueda-san is here!" exclaims Ya-san.
"Over here! Over here!" Pon beckons.
"Thank God," says Ya-san. "I heard you were so busy over there that you might not be able to make it."
"How is everybody doing?" asks Ryouko.
"We're doing great," says Pon.
"Will Kawasaki-senpai be all right?" asks someone.
"Right now her roommate and her boyfriend are looking after her," Ryouko replies.
"So you guys aren't going to be staying here for long?" someone asks.
"Indeed, though they told us we could stay as long as we want," says Ryouko as we see a flashback of the English roommate, apparently speaking perfect Japanese, telling Ryouko to take her time staying in Japan over her protestations.
"So how is it like sharing an apartment with Senpai? Do you even have room to breathe?" asks Ya-san.
Pon replies cheekily, "I'm telling Sugimoto-senpai you said that when she comes along."
Ya-san defends herself: "But you're sharing the same airspace 24/7!"
"But we all have our own rooms, so it almost feels like I'm living alone. We also don't eat at the same time," Ryouko replies.
Akira finally arrives to meet her friends.
"Ah! Ah-san!" yells Ya-san.
"Sorry! I got lost and went to the annex!" says a wheezing Akira.
Akira grabs Ryouko's hands: "It's been so long, Ueda-san!"
"Sorry I couldn't come to our Coming of Age ceremony," Ryouko replies.
Akira then scans the room looking for someone. "Did Fumi-chan come yet?"
"She's in the restroom," someone says. "Immediately after she arrived she tripped and fell, getting a run in her pantyhose!"
We see a red-faced Fumi in the bathroom. "Aww, my hair is all ruined!" Fumi thinks. "I might as well let it down."
At that moment, Akira enters the bathroom. "Fumi-chan, are you all right?"
"Eh?!" Fumi then takes a good look at her old friend, now all grown up. "Ah-chan..."
Akira admonishes Fumi as she brushes her hair: "Gosh, that was stupid of you. You took all that time prettying yourself up, and now look what you did."
A single tear falls from Fumi's left eye: "I know."
"Can I fix it up for you?" asks Akira.
"Thanks," answers Fumi. "Ah-chan, you're cutting your hair short?"
"Oh yeah," replies Akira. "It's easier this way, so I might keep it for a while."
"I see," says Fumi. A pregnant silence ensues.
Akira broke the ice: "I remember spotting you at the train station, Fumi-chan, but that was quite a while ago."
"Really? When was that?"
"It looked like you were with a friend that time, so I wasn't sure how to say hi to you back then."
"Oh, who was it?"
Akira gets a forlorn look on her face: "Someone I didn't know."
"Oh, that must have been Akie-chan!" says Fumi."We had the same lecture together, so I invited her over to my house a bunch of times."
"Oh, really?" says Akira listlessly.
It appears that Fumi is going on and on about her new friend, but the words were falling on deaf ears. Akira's face gets redder and redder until finally she says, "Fumi-chan, sorry. I don't think I want to hear anything else about her."
Fumi spins around, flustered, "S-Sorry! I wasn't thinking! Nobody likes hearing stuff about a total stranger."
"It's not that," says Akira. "Fumi-chan, I love you." Upon hearing those words, Fumi looks up in surprised at Akira, who is now blushing and hanging her head down.
We go to the scene of Kyouko and Kou's wedding, then we focus on Haruka sitting together with her sister and Hinako. She then overhears some girls gushing about Kyouko.
"The bride is so gorgeous!"
"I know!"
Haruka turns to the two women: "Don't you two ever think about getting married and having a wedding?"
"Huh?" replies Orie. "Well, we're not really that hung up on having a wedding."
"We will have one if you guys would let us," Hinako follows up. "I for one would love to wear a wedding dress!"
"We'd be two brides, but I'll be wearing an ultra miniskirt!"
"Mine would be a long dress with a huge slit down the side!"
Haruka appears to have a revelation: "I see..."
"So what about you? Have you found a man yet?" Orie asks Haruka.
"Hey, you don't have to worry about me!"
Later we see Fumi, Akira, and the three former Matsuoka girls sitting together at a table.
"Mogi, aren't you going to marry Okudaira-niisan?" asks Ya-san.
Mogi is taken aback by that question: "Eh? What?"
"You two have been seeing each other for a long time now," says Pon. She then turns to Akira: "Has your brother said anything about that at home?"
"Uh, I think he has thought about it, but he's not going to tell us everything that's on his mind."
Ya-san cackles, "I know both of your families are into the idea, so I know your wedding will be next!"
Mogi can only reply, "Huuh?"
Ya-san wolf whistles: "God, you're sooo lucky!"
"Look, even her forehead is red!" says Pon.
Akira looks at Mogi as she thinks, "She's looks cute."
Ya-san turns to Fumi this time. "By the way, are you all right? You looked like a mess before the ceremony." This elicited a shocked look from Fumi.
"Wait, did she fall down that hard?" someone asked.
"Yeah, it almost looked like she was crying, but who cries over that?"
"We're glad you still made it, though."
"Everyone, we're going to the afterparty!" says a woman, and with that everybody gets up and leaves.
Akira recalls the day she saw Fumi together with her new college friend at the station and how jealous she felt.
"At some point," Akira thought, "being with Fumi-chan stopped being all fun and games and things started getting a little too serious. But once I pulled myself away from all that seriousness, it left an empty space inside me. However, that empty space has now filled to the brim with jealousy."
"I never knew loving someone would make you feel this ugly. If this is how it feels like to fall in love..."
"Then that confession was a spell."
"A spell I cast upon myself."
We return to the bathroom: "Fumi-chan, I love you."
However, after a few moments of silence, Akira bursted out laughing. "Bwaah! Your face is all messed up! No sooner than I get done fixing your hair I have to fix your makeup too!"
Akira wipes the tears off her friends face with a handkerchief. "Fumi-chan, you're always quick to cry."
Fumi looked up at Akira as she contemplated those familiar words. Fumi then begins her soliloquy: "Those very words shone a light 10 years... and even 20 years into my future."
We now end up at Akira's house where Fumi is watching TV and Akira is messing around with her laptop. She then opens up a certain email.
"Hey, Ya-san sent us some pictures, do you want to see them too?" asks Akira.
Fumi comes over and Akira mischievously clicks on one photo. "Oh my god!" yells Fumi as she sees her own tear-stained face, "Why did she do that to me?"
"What do you mean?" says Akira, "I know you'll loove this one." Fumi screamed at the next picture which the audience isn't allowed to see.
"I beg you, delete them," pleads Fumi.
"No can do!"
"Keep it down!" yells Akira's mom. "You two need to go to bed!"
"Okay!" both women replies. They then exchanged looks and approached each other. We are left to wonder what happened as we view a montage of the Kamakura night scenery.
We then see the two women in bed as both women think: "We didn't want to go to sleep at all. We were filled with so many things we want to talk about, so much so that they might overflow and drain away."
It's now morning and Akira appears to be the first one to get up.
"Ah-chan, are you awake?"
"Yeah, I just got up."
With a gentle look in her eyes, Akira says to Fumi, "Good morning."
Recalling the time they were kids, apparently playing with sweet, blue flowers, Fumi replies back: "Good morning."
Just as I feared, Takako Shimura ended this manga waaay too soon. For the last few chapters it had been just one huge time skip after another. I wonder what happened that made her fold both this manga and Houro Musuko, but whatever it is it's unfortunate. In any case, cross off another manga that I have loved for so many years that ended too soon for my tastes. Believe it or not, this was the first manga that I bought ;_; Five stars.
I don't follow Houro Musuko, so I didn't know it was also ending, but wow, both long running mangas ending close to each other? You have to wonder whether Shimura had actually wanted to end both, or whether it was somebody else's decision. Especially with Aoi Hana, talk about abrupt! While I'm maybe definitely a little brokenhearted it's ended, I'm also sighing in relief, at one point I was worried I'd die before it end.
I have to say, I'm very happy with the ending. Which is really weird because after reading chapter 51, I was hoping, praying, sacrificing goats for a 5 Cm Per Second-esque ending. (I loved that ending.) But yeah, I agree though, ended too soon.
Btw, Kokujin-kun, there's apparently an interview with Takako along with chapter 52, I was wondering if you had seen it? Anyway, thank you very much for this final synopsis. :)
Personally I thought this was a weak ending. Perhaps the writer wanted more time, but still there were enough pages in this issue to provide for a stronger ending for the story of Fumi and Ai.
Which was the problem with this series in general, they got away from the two main characters too often, dwelling on tangential characters. It was if the writer got bored. Shame, a good ending would have really made this a great series, as opposed to a decent series.
So, was this series supposed to be twice as long? What happened? Did someone force the writer to wrap everything up in less than 3 issues? Not to mention the extremely weak side characters. Blagh, oh well. At least I didn't find out about this manga until it was almost done, anyway.
I am laughing my butt off right now. FYI, neither the translator nor the editor uploaded the chapter to any online reader, so please, don't blame them for the confusion suffered. I just checked the online readers, and wow, only 2 sites uploaded it correctly. It's so depressingly funny.
GarLogan78 said: Ok finally read it. I don't really understand the ending dynamic with Fumi and Akira. Are they together? Good friends again?
It's pretty obvious that they reconciled in the end. And if that strongly implied kiss is an indication, then, in a romantic way. Let's not forget the last 2 pages, as well. I can't help but think that Akira, waking up first, was lovingly gazing at Fumi still asleep. And I say that because this is Shimura we're talking about, you also have to look at what's not on the page, along with what's on it.
Oh god, thank you very much. It makes more sense now.
Also, maybe it's just me, but I feel as if the artist just got tired of Aoi Hana and not only filled it with unnecessary filler and new terrible side characters but also the art got a bit.. lazy? Most of this doesn't look very detailed.
thats what i thought as well, about the artist/author. but in comparison to the first chapter and the last, style wise, there isnt that much difference. although as you said theres less detail. i just realized maybe thats why she cut akira's hair, so she wouldnt have to draw her braids anymore.
Loved the ending. It was a little rushed (so were other parts of the manga), but it wasn't so rushed that any important information was loss. You just have to do a little decrypting, and take note of body language and blush lines.
Regarding the nature of Akira and Fumi's relationship:
I think they at least reconciled at the end. A kiss was definitely implied after they were told to go to bed, their matching blush lines as they looked at each other implies they may have done more. And it's very telling that Akira wasn't embarrassed to see Fumi when the sun rose. She seemed to be a lot more comfortable with her feelings and with Fumi. The "good morning" line, which parallels a moment in their past, may represent their new beginning. Also, Akira's haircut may be reflective of her maturity.
The ending to the manga left me with the same feeling as the anime. Akira was also poorly developed here. Her realizing her feelings for Fumi was just dumped on the last 2 chapters and her character pretty much remained static throughout the whole manga.
Way too much focus was given to side characters compared to Akira again
As much as I love how it handled the romance and drama aspect for most of the part, (way better than Girl Friends tbh) but it's convoluted as fuck. The story's branching off too much. Way too much focus given to the side characters. Then it also hit me with rushed and weak ending. The broke up then made up after a timeskip was poorly handled. Seriously left bad taste in my mouth.
I knew roughly what to expect with the ending, so I'm more or less satisfied. The final few chapters were really rushed and I'm not a fan of back to back time skips, either.
I interpreted it the same as @aikaflip, and I'm very happy on that front. Even with the convoluted nature of this manga, I liked Fumi and Akira so much that the shortcomings of the manga don't really bother me.
It makes me sad that the ending was rushed. I didn't know, so when I started to see all those timeskips I was disappointed.
Overall it was good and I loved the relationship between Fumi and Akira, it was heartwarming but I didn't like the focus on some side characters. The author could've used those chapters to fully develop Akira's feelings, after all the manga is about her and her relationship with Fumi, mainly, and I would liked to see how Akira settled her feelings.
I just wanted to see them living together 5 years later and what that looks like.
Even if the time was limited I assume the mangaka finished the story like she wanted.
Still, Japan has a terrible habit of ending a gay series super short. You don't see that with Thai/SK Manhwa etc. like WDFS?, Pulse and Lily Love. Japan, please have more respect for your great series.
I always read the last few chapters of this story if I'm down and I want some Yuri. Their longing and acceptance for each other are so beautiful.
It would be cool to write a fanfic about how they're sharing an apartment, their living habits, what the sex is like, what Fumi and Akira's parents thought.
And they get back together again. Yay ? I honestly could not care. I haven’t read a lot of yuri but damn, this isn’t that good by any standards. It has some great art and some interesting characters but it’s execution just did not impress me.
