Wow this arc was even more troubling than the last one. This series knows how to push buttons that's for sure. Never expected this to be a siscon story. Albeit a pretty tasteful one. I liked this arc a lot though. The ending left me vaguely uncomfortable but I imagine that was at least partially the intention. I mainly liked how the story felt bigger than the previous one though. It had more characters. It explained more about the world and the way the Medicine vendor works. And it was just overall a more entertaining story. And I liked the first one.

My biggest complaint is maybe I should re watch it, but I didn't think this one was very good as a mystery. Sure some details might have been kept from us. But an attentive viewer should have had a handle on what was going on at that inn by the time the big reveal came. Maybe I was just not paying enough attention (I don't think so but maybe), it just didn't seem possible to figure out the details of this mystery before they told it to us.

One of the things that made this arc so great to me was it's large and memorable cast. I liked the pompous monk, the greedy ship owner, the cute brown girl, the scarred crazy dude et all. And more so than the previous arc I found the Medicine Vendors interactions with them to be fairly compelling. His reserved tone and seemingly carefree attitude leave so much of his behavior ambiguous. When he tells the monk to keep chanting is it to help or to get him to shut up? Why does he seem not to care about this dude who clearly wants to steal his sword? And does he give a shit if cute brown girl lives or dies?

The ending may have been poignant and powerful and even a little beautiful. Like in a twisted way. But my favorite part of the arc was when they were all facing their fears in the second episode. All of the nightmares were really cool and creative. And I laughed my ass off at the monk trying to save himself by saying his biggest fear was manju (ripping off rakugo?). It really showed what a well defined cast they'd assembled for this arc. And had some of the cooler more creative animation we've seen from the series so far. Though I'm pretty close to kink shaming on the whole pregnancy water breaking thing at this point. Looking forward to the next arc.

That was tragic... A beautiful lady such as herself dedicated enough to die alone in sea rather than be with someone else other than her brother. He was having selfish thoughts but after she told him her intentions, his regret piled up more and more harboring a grudge towards the Dragon Triangle to the point where half of his soul was responsible for the chaos.

I think that his fat grotesque form was a representation of his heavy self-inflicted burden and regrets, becoming thin and fairly attractive after the Medicine Seller destroyed the Mononoke with his sword (which were the same flames that burned the spirit babies).

That samurai crying over his broken sword lol He got another one to kill more people with anyway.

We finally got to see the sword. I liked this arc a lor, the sea scenery allowed for even a more fantastical display; i really liked the judging fish and i found the monk and his sister's story to be quite beautiful, yet very tragic.

Now, the samurai was indeed a strange folk, i wonder if he's gonna play a part in an upcoming arc?

Love how the tables keep turning and turning. This is definitely one of those anime that requires you to rewatch it to see a lot of things that you missed while watching.

I agree that the beginning of the arc was slow, but the last two episodes were really interesting.

why are all the men in this anime more beautiful than me
this anime would probably be great to watch more than once, to fully grasp and take notice of details in the scene that you may of missed the first time. depending on how it ends, i might just do that

The first arc was kinda meh storywise, this arc however was truly enjoyable. The mystery was much more present and intriguing and the cast of characters were really unique.

Yea im not dropping this one

Fucking phenomenal episode that really touches on human emotions and it pulls no punches on what people think/feel.

It seems like the production/writers were not trying to shock the viewers with its content. Rather, they wanted to convey to the viewer the emotional struggle the monk was going through intellectually with the dialogue, but with the art itself.

Talk about intensity, and I had just called the last episode intense, this was an outstanding episode.
I'm not too big on incest even as an entertainment purpose from what goes in Anime, movies... etc. However, from a story standpoint, this was absolutely jaw-dropping, the best incest-related I've seen in the medium, and it's gonna be a lot of work to top this one.
I wonder what's up with the Samurai dude at the end.

Great ending to the story. I don't understand why the monk ended up rejuvenated instead of dead, though 😐

Absolutely amazing episode! I loved every second of it. Seeing Kusuriuri's second form was great. Who would've thought that the monk was actually beautiful?

Probably my favorite episode of the season so far..really a great arc this one..

So rather than the Mononoke being created due to the ill will of the sister the reason for the Mononoke to come into being was the brother's regret and truth..

Really well done with this one..

Damn Kusuri-uri's other form looks cool as shit!

Oh so the Form of the Umibozu was in the monk's eye. So he thought he was in love with his sister but he actually mistook sisterly love as romantic love. And these false feelings built up in him for all these years(making his face look uglier and him getting fatter) and that's how the Mononoke formed inside him.

The samurai dude covered one of his eyes with his hand so does he have one in him too?

This whole arc blew my mind. What a sublime show. Don't get me wrong, I liked the previous arc, but its slower pace and introductory nature didn't leave as much of a resounding impact as this one did. And I have to say, I absolutely love mystical horror stories involving the sea. This was simply entrancing. And it's way more than visuals. Most notably, its characters, to me, are quite memorable, and this episode was hauntingly poignant as it delved into the emotionally distraught backstory of the monk.
Lastly, I find the medicine seller to be so, so cool, and his personality isn't just for flair. He is wise and impartial, and his monologue about never glancing into our dark sea reinforced this. His fear of "finding out that there is a world which exists with no Form, Truth, or Reason" struck a chord with me, for that is my greatest fear as well. Overall, if the quality of these next few arcs remains the same, I can see Mononoke becoming one of my favorite anime.

Well, color me surprised. Incest being addressed in a serious and somewhat heartfelt way in anime? Easy 5/5 episode.

i seem to be in the minority to think the first arc was better
this one just went too slow (i think it should've also been 2 eps) and in this ep i found some things to be a bit messy. but ep 4 > ep 3&5

I just love watching this series. I don't mind that it takes place over multiple episodes, I think it's really neat. I can't get over how visually stimulating it is and the facial expressions of the characters.

I feel so badly for Oyo. When he said, "Is she an idiot?" I immediately knew that it wasn't going to end well. Who would have thought that it was Genki the whole time? And not him per se, but the actual feelings of guilt and shame manifested in a horrible monster. I love the lesson here that there is a discernable difference between 'love' and 'lust'.

Revisiting Mononoke, I can undoubtedly say it is my favourite series. With the second watch, I was able to identify the symbolism throughout the entirety of this arc which is omnipresent but not obvious and well thought out. The twists and turns of the monk really depicted the human psyche well with how he tried to deceive himself and others. I loved how the monk is considered good looking after the destruction of the mononoke (his second side) compared to his previous form in a similar way to how the pure minded Oyou is presented as beautiful - basically those with true intentions are beautiful while those with hidden and destructive intentions are not. Overall amazing conclusion to this exciting arc.

Nice twist. It was the other way around. Genkei is one lucky bastard for his cute sister to have the hots for him. Well, I do admit he did look good when he was younger.

This entire episode was just breathtaking. I was completely glued to the screen, at a loss for words.

The reveal that the priest has been lying to himself for 50 years, building up this twisted force inside himself... it was horrifying, repulsive and sad. What a story.
