Karma is pretty much the idea that if you do good things, good stuff will come back to you, and that if you do bad things, they will eventually catch up to you (in your current life or even your next ones). Is that something you believe in? Or do you think someone could be as good as they can but never see any positive outcomes out of it, and that someone absolutely evil could never face any consequences and die peacefully?

I believe those who consistently behave in malicious ways, carry certain indignities inside them, and in general give off a bad energy tend to find that misfortune will find them quicker.
And it usually comes in the shape of just desserts, because that's what a person like that carries inside of them.

Manifestation is a real thing, and it requires physical input. If you force a positive attitude, go for a walk, smile when you don't want to, do a few good deeds, and reward yourself for being productive I guarantee you'll end the day feeling better than you would have if you spent your day wallowing angrily, mistreating people, blaming everything and everyone and abusing your body.

Karma runs the same concept but outward rather than inward.
That's why you'll find that the most successful pieces of shit in history only ever did evil things privately, and outwardly gave a positive impression.

That may be a spiritual thing inherently, it's probably not but what do I know. I think that qualifies as karma regardless.

Reading other replies in this thread makes me want to add: This concept isn't definite, it's a trend rather than a law. Also, equating fame, notoriety and even riches to not having received karma is misdirected

I'd like to, but nah. My mother in particular was far too nice and helpful to people, she helped people similarly affect by our illnesses get treated at the hospital we were at, I think expecting a little payback in return that never appeared. She often aided people who had fallen over and were hurt outside too. And no, as far as I know all the people that did wrong to us all (sometimes gleefully) were never made accountable for anything, instead trying to deflect the blame onto us, ruining our reputation and harming us even more. I honestly wish my mother was more selfish, as including more people along the way made it so much more difficult, as they weren't cooperative and just looked out for themselves. We may have had a chance for justice if it was just kept to ourselves.

I think everyday observation should show you that if there's anything like a reward system baked into this universe it's biased to favor evil deeds. There are reasons why certain ancient philosophies accused creation and the creator of being ill-intentioned, and those reasons haven't lost their force; indeed, they're stronger than ever.

Crime pays, nice guys never win, and evil always prevails.

@XMGA030 So you believe in a kind of "reserve-karma", I take it? I hope it doesn't influence too much into doing bad deeds...

@Zarutaku Well, karma is a concept most often attached to religions based on reincarnation, so a lot of people believe in it since they grew up with it, not necessarily because they desperately want it to exist. The same could be said of all religions with an afterlife.

You can do good to some people and bad to other people in the same single action. Spreadsheet inventing, saving the life of a serial killer as in Monster, eutanasiating a suffering being and donating its organs, stopping a bus for a robber catch up to it and all the trolley problem variations. Does Karma balance it out, or you get a very bad thing followed by a very good thing in sucession? If I do a big evil deed and a lot of small low impact good deeds they cancel out?

People always talk about Karma optimistically too. They never think: I am killing a lot of food to exist.

So I just believe "World is better if people try to do good things."

No, I don't believe in karma. But I do believe in werewolves! Like, if a werewolf bites me just for posting this, and then I have to spend a week on antibiotics for lycanthropy - I'm convinced, that's karma.

@Zarutaku I'd think that these beliefs have more to do with encouraging people to do good deeds and avoid doing evil.

That'd be a morality system straight out of a video game. Would be nice if the gods let us see our Paragon/Renegade meter.

Karma is just the fact that your actions can come back at you. Karma is not so intelligently guided like divine reward/punishment so it isn't always a 1 to 1 result.

@Zarutaku I don't remember saying that. In a perfect world, we would educate our children about morality without threatening them with misfortune (in their current or future lives) or even eternal torture in hell.

I don't believe in supernatural karma. I believe in mathematical karma where each choice contributes to a web of interconnected events. I'm too lazy to completely explain. XD

@fleurbleue But Karma is all about that delayed feedback (deliberate action/its consequence).

@traed Then the whole thing loses its esoteric charm because there is a simpler term for the same thing - consequences.

Consequences implies being responsible but is a butterfly responsible for a hurricane?

No. I won't judge anyone who believes in karma, but from my personal experiences, I don't believe karma exists. Many of the nicest people I have met have either suffered intensely or has died.

I'm not a nihilist, but I don't think karma is an actual thing. Nothing is guaranteed in life.

Generally yes strictly only in a secular sense.

In Chinese, it would be zì zuò zì shòu (自作自受) which roughly means you created something, you receive the result. In Korean it would be jae eop ja deuk (自業自得 or 자업자득), same meaning.

Karma is as stupid as, ‘God has a plan that relies on your unfair suffering.’ If you help people, you should do so because you want to; not because you expect something in return. If people do not punish others for their wrongdoings, they will not be punished. ‘Good people will have good things automatically happen to them and vice versa,’ is like, ‘things will get better.’
