Well I'm curious since lately I was Looking for a Anime Recommendation but people suggest me to use AI, and so I use AI and behold, I like their recommend anime that rarely mention and really close to my taste.

So do you use AI for looking for a anime?

Well here's a topic that doesn't feel like a rerun from when I used to post regularly here.

I don't know how you can get anime recommendations by AI, as in I don't know of an AI that knows anime well enough to give me recs. (Do you just throw a query into ChatGPT or something?)

But I wouldn't trust it to give me good recommendations. Heck, I don't really trust other people to give me good recommendations, though this really depends on the exact details.

Meanwhile, something I've already done is scoured a site like Anime-Planet with its tons and tons of attribute tags for both series and characters and gone through filtered listings with different combinations of filters and opened up many tabs and added many series to my PTW list (or WTW list, as it's called over there) that way. (I basically maintain both MAL and A-P accounts that largely mirror each other.) I feel like I've probably looked at most of everything that might be of interest to me, and these days if I wanna watch something I actually just go to my PTW, because it's large enough, as I'm enough of a dork to do a near-comprehensive search and added a few hundred things to it. I'll still watch stuff outside of the list, but I've basically made a (rather large) shortlist for myself already.

I'm open to playing around with an AI-based recommender, though I'm not gonna reserve high hopes for it.
Avatar character is Gabriel from Gabriel DropOut.

@GlennMagusHarvey I use the Chatgpt and I use the key word "niche and Hidden gem" and then based of my favorite anime (since most of my favorite anime are from 2000s and 80s) so it gave me an 2000s niche anime

I did a while ago, but the last anime I watched which solely came to my attention because of AI was Majokko Shimai no Yoyo to Nene (Google Gemini gave me this recc), and that one ended up being one of my favorite modern anime movies. It's just such a pain in the ass though, figuring out what you should and shouldn't tell the AI, if it's Gemini, whether to give it the entirety of your list as a file or not (Since you have to account for PtW anime causing confusion, and even if you programmatically strip those out, if it'll even understand your scoring system without you explaining it every time), and the trial and error of telling it "I want this and this, but not this or this." is just tiring.

Maybe I'll do it all again soon, though, since it's worth having more to pick from in the PtW. That, and AI does also do a good job helping me decide what from my PtW I should watch next. Soon... maybe.

Also yes, Gemini lets you upload your entire exported MAL list as a file (After unGZ-ing the list, of course). Though you really should use Google's AI Studio for this, instead of the Gemini interface, since the Gemini interface just kinda sucks in terms of how much control it gives you.

I don't believe AI could recommend something I would like as there are many subjective factors to decide (in a flash) before I even pick up an anime to watch.

I used ai to reccommend hgames effectively, but not anime given it fundamently does not understand ecchi tagged stuff given its more niche nature. It goes for mainstream picks most scene like dxd.

I'm afraid to try it. If I do and I actually like what the AI recommends it might imply that my intellectual capabilities have dropped to AI levels.

No, I don't use it, the AI couldn't find out about the Christian movie I want to watch again and I didn't find it anymore;_;

I did try to ask ChatGPT for some recommendations but the results were rather mixed / generic.
Maybe if I tried uploading my entire list so it has something to work on rather than my generic questions I would probably get better results haha

Does one even need "AI" for that tho?

Like...

Lets say you have a show rated as a 9.
Now MAL could give you a "Other people who voted XYZ with 9 also gave these shows a 9 (or better)".
Add some filter options like themes and genre.
And of course adjust for average score of the users.

Another idea would be to implement a scoring system for characters. Divided into their different characteristic traits.
Then one could search for shows with similar characters or specific character traits.
(For example imagine having a toplist here on MAL for the most tsundere characters).

I used generative AI to find out what the "big three" anime were. It said One Piece, Naruto and Bleach. Attack on Titan and Dragon Ball didn't make the list =(

Usually GPT tell me stuff which I have already seen but I've heard you can give links to GPT and it analyses the data in the web you're giving [heard it can make a shorter/nutshell/bullet points from articles you're linking to GPT], so maybe if it would analyse my completed list it would give a proper recommendation? I shall try it later if it actually works.

Edit - doesn't work as 6/10 I have already seen, 4/10 are in my ptw. On second attempt with more detailed instructions it even gave more stuff I've already seen 8/10... and most of the titles are popular, GPT is too weak for that right now.

For those of you who have used AI to get anime recs, I'm actually curious, what is its "hit rate" like? Like, how many of its recs do you end up rejecting/disliking vs. how many of those do you end up finishing/liking?

Well, this is factually true, or was, rather, because those three were pretty often referred to as such, a decade or two ago. Dragon Ball is from an older cohort, while Attack on Titan is newer. The label doesn't really work anymore though, since things have changed pretty substantially since then.

@Krautschi Tried your list in Gemini, and it kinda worked... though it pinched a few from your PtW despite being told not to, and took one from your completed list(?). But the suggestion for Saraiya Goyou seems interesting, even if it's no longer watchable on Crunchyroll. Hell, it even looks like something I'd like.

EDIT: Replaced GIF with a better looking and smaller WebP.

No, never. I just listen to friend's recommendations or any recommendations I see on social media.
If I had to choose between One Piece and a girlfriend...I think I'll go with One Piece

nah, don't need to use it, my planned list consist of 645 titles + the ones from spring/summer/fall of 2024 I didn't put there [which would be around 60 anime anyway, 20-25 per season]. From the list I have I just make myself "bingo" cards, I either use random number generator or just my gut to make a small list that I will follow for the next 2-3 months

No, I just look around randomly, because getting “suggestions on what one might like” is basically putting yourself in a bubble, which is not good.

So do you use AI for looking for a anime?

No. So far I got recommendations from fellow anime fans. Also I get "recommendations" by seeing some interesting random picture on Internet and using reverse image search.
I apologize for my mistakes, because it's not my native language.

Never done that before since I already have enough shows I plan to watch but haven't taken the time to watch yet. I am not against trying it if I need to though.
