Good Ninan and Momoka relationship development, especially how it ends with this "confession" from Nina, seeing more of her past is still as sad before... she was forced to apologize to her bully, but obviously couldn't and just ran out from the classroom...

Ye this was bound to happen but now that they've got it out of their system it's time to actually focus on making songs and defeat diadust. Also Momoka was seeing herself in Nina after all.

Btw was Rupa speeding with just the two of them there? Just realised she actually might be foreign too.

Maybe I dont understand what "going pro" actually means, but I dont see Momokas issue at all here. I could understand her leaving DD since they wanted to change their style and Momoka was basically in charge of the bands style since she wrote the songs, but here?
She IS popular, they have a decent following already, have always been well received, not a single bad performance and yeah Rupa and Tomo arent exactly unknown either. She has all the necessary experience and connections even. I mean can they even "fail"? She had no issues going to that club and having to buy into the tickets first. If just not calling yourself "pro" and aiming for DD would be good enough for her then whats the issue?
Its not like they have been forced to change their style and go sellout.
Just do what you do and see if it works out.

Also what do they even mean by followers? DD had 20k last ep but TT already has 27k?

The wall slamming actually looked very bad in 3dcg

Also yeah PEAK. I realized Im really not good with angsty shows/episodes.

I kinda feel bad for DD, like they basically did what they thought they needed to do after they dropped out of school because of Momoka and then this new kid declares band war with their old member. Must sting.

PS: this is why I adore original anime, adaptions just dont hit like this

DRAMAAAAAA~ But really tho, these girls are so dramatic lol, but I love it, at long last Nina and Momoka settled their differences, and we also got to find out why Momoka quit Diamond Dust, but the thing Momoka doesn’t know is that the key is to make it big going commercial, then once you have all the money you start making the music you’ve truly wanted to all along. And also, there’s nothing wrong with more commercial jams, I take them along with the deep cuts, you can do both, you can sneak in your true art pieces on an album headed with a hit single, but I’m also talking like I know what I’m talking about which I kinda do and kinda don’t lol, mainly going based on all the albums I’ve listened to with is very many, but when it comes to music as a business I am not very knowledgeable.

And we also got a meeting between Momoka and her old band mates, aka the current Diamond Dust, and while for them it was more of a heartfelt reunion, to Momoka and Nina it was like a declaration of war lol, I’m definitely looking forward to the next handful of episodes now that the whole band is in this together, along with the new developments. Also how dare they actually have a 2D animated flashback, over here making me wish the whole show looked like that lol.

Nina just cannot have a normal conversation with someone, it's impressive.

Subaru tries to defend her yet Nina keeps on shitting Momo, I kinda get why she was bullied lol

And that love confession was nice, but nah it ain't yuri shit, in Japan is normal to say "I love you" to people you are intimate with, without it being in a romantic way. Nina said it was a confession because even though it's normal, it's still weird to tell that so someone you just had non-stop fights with lol
Now, if it really were a romantic confession, then whatever honestly, this anime is clearly not going the yuri route, or any romantic way for that matter, and I only care about Subaru character-wise anyway.

For real, people is braindead, "good close friends = homosexuality", what a way to tell everyone you just don't get how social interactions and friendship works.

Also why do they try to blame Subaru, poor girl, Nina keeps saying stuff like "I don't want to say I am wrong", well, if there is a character that hasn't done anything wrong at all that is Subaru ❤️ Thanks to her the band even exists lol
Sorry if my english is bad (っ˘▽˘)っ~~~

Hello,

Episode 8 of Girls Band Cry has just won "Anime episode of 2024" award on Abema TV (~japanese Netflix).

Note: commenter guy in black leather jacket is Tenshin "Mukai" Hantarou, a well-known comedian and otaku.

Winning the award, Togenashi Togeari band got to perform anime's OP "Wrong World" on TV, though it was a pre-recorded session as their bassist is still down with flu fever:

> SUBARU I LOVE YOU

The popular abbreviation for Subaru is 486 among asian Girls Band Cry fans. This comes from South Korea and literally means I Love You (being the number of calligraphy strokes required for writing 사랑해 in Hangul alphabet).

Nina is 27 (Ni-Nana ?)

Only in the West, while Girls Band Cry remains crazy popular throughout Asia and that means billions of people!

Western audiences mostly find Iseri Nina unlikeable, even unsufferable and grating - an egomaniac, spoiled diva with ADHD, her circumstances not relatable and her personality unbusinesslike. She is perceived as completely unfit for any role in the entertainment / hospitality sector. Thus people can't understand why the other 4 girls failed to boot Nina from TogeToge ASAP and replace her with a more reasonable vocalist, like Nightwish band did IRL with Tarja Turunen.

The fandom worked hard trying to evangelize GBC among non-otaku western viewers, but failed. The stigma of CGI animation can be overcome by showing how great GBC looks, but the toxic nature of Nina and the depressed state of Momoka is just too much for commercialized american tastes. GBC has been available for over 50 days on Crunchyroll but still has barely 2000 viewer ratings (while Bocchi the 2D partially animated Rock has 56.000)

I think Toei Studio may have to resort to the "USAilor Moon" method they almost aired in 1993: that is to rewrite the story and main character for american tastes, implementing large scale animation modifications / recreation accordingly. That is, if they want Girls Band Cry to succeed overseas.

(For the younger generations: when Toei's original Sailor Moon adaptation aired in Japan, US distributors refused to accept it and demanded a thoroughly americanized version, with partially live-action, partially western animation approach. The title character, Usagi Tsukino had her name, looks and personality completely rewritten. Toei produced a 10-minute pilot episode of the americanized story, but eventually dropped the idea and distributed the original version themselves in the States. The "USAilor Moon" pilot footage was long believed lost or destroyed but found in 2022 among the Library of Congress' vast copyrighted works deposit.)

as for me personally i like the sass that nina brings to the show. she completely betrayed my expectations from ep 1 in the best way. i could understand how some would perceive her as whiny but i really like how her personality accents the central theme of self preservation > changes for the sake of others (in GBC case, commercialism). i really wish more ppl would give GBC a shot because i think there is a lot you can derive from this show!! (ps; the USailor moon fun fact was really interesting and insightful i had heard Sailor Moons western release was plagued with a ton of localization but i had no idea about a US revamp!)

Glad that's over, but I have mixed feelings about the resolution...

Nina won some points from me this episode for being so heartfelt as she tried to reach Momoka. Nina's words at the Diamond Dust show were on point. "You're using me to run away" and "please stop being scared" were really moving and got to the core of the problem.

It was also touching how much Momoka's song exactly meant to Nina in the past, as she was shown to have walked away from the bully singing that.

But it was still annoying how Nina basically just flailed at Momoka for most of the time, provoking her and demanding her to surrender. Her "go ahead and hit me, you're just the same as the rest" was the height of self-righteousness and some straight-up gaslighting. So Momoka's the bully here? She's trying to ruin her life and dreams?

Meanwhile, I'm still glad that Momoka was brought down a few pegs, as she was being way too stubborn this late in the game.

But I still find her much more relatable and sympathetic than Nina. She feels trapped between love and fear, which actually comes from experience. It's not just fear for herself, it's fear of leading the whole band down a ruinous path, which already happened once and she (selfishly, she thinks) escaped on her own.

It was a nice touch that it's her Diamond Dust bandmates that push Momoka over the edge and back into her new band.

But again, it doesn't feel like "the Nina problem" was properly addressed and resolved in all of this. She just did and said whatever she wanted to and got away with it scot-free. She was right the whole time, reality be damned. She is right to quit school and send her parents' money back. Good job, Nina, you saved the band!

I'm reminded of a somewhat similar conflict between Kumiko and Asuka in Sound! Euphonium S2. And I loved how they handled that situation and the characters. The stakes were arguably lower, but it felt like both sides were sensible, and both sides got some serious reality checks in the process. And most importantly, the love and care those characters had for each other was very believable and touching.

Maybe this is just a "pursue your dreams and it will be fine" kind of show after all, even if that was not the impression I got until this point. Maybe this is "protagonist fixes everything" kind of show.

But Subaru was the sane one as usual, explaining the situation to Momoka and pushing her to actually think and make a decision. And I liked Rupa's patience and quiet optimism. I'm not sure I like what Nina brings to the table...

Hi-bike is not a motorcycle gang story, just a marching band anime... As such, can't really compare it with the rock music franchise Girls Band Cry since sensible people don't usually become rock musicians. Anyhow, Hibike Euphonium was written by the same Jukki Hanada who scripted GBC and he got involved in it exactly because he's had enough of the minimal stakes, school-bound stories much removed from real life. So Jukki Hanada said these about the main girls:

Nina Iseri:
"Initially, I imagined her as a more reserved and quiet type who would internalize her emotions, but as I wrote, she gradually changed. In the second episode, I had envisioned her pulling the lamp and going home to cry, but when I put myself in Nina's shoes, I felt that crying there would just make me angry, so it turned into a more aggressive scene. Once the basic family structure and background of the character are decided, I develop them further as I write, and Nina grew like a monster as the story progressed."
[He then laments the full Togenashi Togeari band was to assemble by episode 4, but Nina's monter personality started to take over his brain: he could literally hear her protest against everbody and everything, so had to devote two more eps to sort out Nina vs. Subaru and Nina vs. Momoka (round 1) so the full band only got together during ep6.]

Momoka Kawaragi:
"Having an older, more mature character as part of the main cast was one of the things I wanted to do with this project, which is why I didn't set the story entirely within a school. Momoka is a woman who, as an adult, knows the harsh realities of life and is cautious because of it. Such a woman is pushed forward by the younger protagonist. This is the backbone of the story, and like Nina, I developed her as I wrote. Actually, in the first half, I planned to keep her as someone Nina would admire, but since Nina was way more assertive than expected, they ended up clashing early on."

Subaru Awa:
"She is the balancer between Nina and Momoka. I imagined her as someone who, despite the clumsiness of the other two, would skillfully mediate between them. Given her role as a balancer, she could easily become a convenient character compared to Nina and Momoka, so I made sure to properly depict her background to avoid that. The dynamic between Nina and Subaru was something I fully grasped when I wrote the scene in the fifth episode where they went to see Diamond Dust live, and from then on, I had no doubts and enjoyed writing it."

GBC episode 8 aired precisely one year ago.
TOEI decided to commemorate it with a dungeon / isekai / MMORPG themed merchandize release, featuring arch-demon Nina and her infernal Togenashi Togearmy vs. Diamond Dust hero party. Fan artists immediately ran wild with that.

I had a rediculous long delay to get to this episode. Got hung up on other things and rewatched everything

I feel like Nina and Momoka act more aggressive than makes sense but I get where both of them are coming from in a way but not at face value. I dont think Momoka makes sense at her wanting to leave the band she is in currently, wheras I totally get her wanting to leave the previous one especially with those girls acting all weirdly catty about it this episode saying how they were right. Like wtf? No, it's difference in goals.

That confession felt kind of ambiguous in context. While I always was getting mild yuri vibes I don't feel there is all that much chemistry between the two but Im not really against it either it can go either way for me and im fine with either way since i dont feel too invested in that.
