Story No. 3: The Pretty Boy in the Attic

A new story that's as pretty whimsical of NisiOisin's standards. And good luck trying to run away from the Bishounen Club, because they won't let you be.

Doing a club activity for once, the "emergency summons" to pain the ceiling for the Art Room in the clubroom, that's nice...except that part of the ceiling that was holed up opens up a whole new mystery of canvasses of familiar paintings, and those paintings are from famous artists all over the world, just missing the humans involved.

The part where the Bishounen Club goes over their theories for all 33 paintings with missing humans in Chibi style is just the *chef's kiss* touch as expected from Akiyuki Shinbo's calibre. As it stands, as spectacular as Dojima's circumstances are, it's still not a fireproof solution like Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, and Sosaku's one sounds the most based one since he's the Artiste.

Nagahiro's conclusion for an art teacher named Kowako Towai, the legendary teacher in the Auditorium in the Auditorium, the Orator does his job once again to debunk the mystery concerning this teacher and her artisitic works of marvel that turned into a crime scene.

Sure enough, Lai Fudatsuki isn't done for good and still presents a threat, just probably not for this story. But have fun figuring this one with the mysteries.

So they found 33 paintings... but without the characters, well it's quite mysterious, and the explanations about the art teacher Towai were interesting, she kidnapped the students?!

Man... I wish Sousaku says something. He remains silent all the time and that's what makes him charming to me at least (no homo).

Quite a few compelling hypotheses they all come up with in this episode about those 33 paintings and Sensei about kidnapping the students. Also, Fudatsuki is still lurking around, it seems that way.

Pretty good episode! Mayumi running away from the club was hilarious lmao. Those 33 paintings are pretty interesting, though I am confused if Kowako Towai literally kidnapped students or just figuratively like the paintings. If she did kidnap them, it's probably gonna be like she took the school's students and put them in her own school or something where she can teach art, that is my theory. Didn't expect to hear from Lai again immediately after his arc, wonder what he talked to Mayumi about.

I really liked that chibi artstyle while they were presenting their theories, but of course Nagahiro already had facts and evidences, though Sosaku's theory that there are other paintings is probably true. I wonder how the missing Mona Lisa painting will come into play. Looking forward to the next episode.

I am liking this arc considerably more than the last one. It was entertaining to hear all of the club members’ different interpretations about why the paintings had no people and the kidnapping case involved with it seems interesting. I like how some parts about the case are hinted throughout the episode, although some of it felt a little forced, like Dojima saying that the people in the paintings were abducted.

It's getting really boring slowly. I thought I would like this arc but when everyone delivered their opinions about the paintings, what's up with those unrealistic dramatic theories...they don't make sense. Only what Hyota said that the artist may not be good with human portrait seemed to make sense.

Wow, an art teacher who took their students overseas for practice....and who abducted all the students for a reason like that.

Perhaps unlike some others here, I don't need my anime to make sense. In fact, I might prefer it if they don't. I want to appreciate the strange and outlandish stories anime as a medium enables.

As for this arc, I think I'm going to enjoy it more than the last one. This mystery seems all together grander and more impossible than the previous one. I can't wait to see how this all comes together.

Trippy to have a painting of an auditorium inside an auditorium ...just auditorium-ception painting.
Hearing about that eccentric teacher makes me think she would've been a great advisor for the bishounen detective club.

Mayumi still hasn't accepted her belonging to the group, thankfully, the guys or boys still persists her belonging to the group which was really sweet.
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

the whole style of this show screams monogatari and I love it.
Not only Nisio Isin's writing but also every aspect of filmmaking Shaft puts into. The Editing, perspectives, unusual positioning within the frame, weird poses etc.
It really is a pleasure to watch.

Mayumi hasn't really been shown to DISLIKE being in the detective club, just that she's been uncomfortable with certain decisions, yet this episode starts as if it's an established fact that she HATES it and doesn't want to be part of it anymore (while she simultaneously acts invested once there...). There is also no reason given for why she wouldn't be able to quit the club if she wants. My only guess is some secrecy thing, but this is not addressed IN the show itself and would not hold up with the lore that they've had clients and the clients don't go telling who the club members are.

Mayumi doesn't remember she has a cell phone until it rings, which comes off as her being dumb until it's then mentioned later the club leader gave it to her against her will. Why not just include a scene like that first? It would help bolster the idea that Mayumi is not into the club, which again, has not been properly established ON SCREEN. I'm going to once again compare this to Ouran, because it feels like the writer took the main premise of that and slapped it onto this, but then changed some of the details and forgot to make sure the remaining parts still worked. The MC in OHSHC never wanted to join the club and is kept there against her will because she's in debt. Also the guys sexually harass her, well beyond the stupid things that happen in this show, and is pressured into pretty much everything for at least the first few episodes. Her dislike of her situation is well established on screen and there is clear rationale given for why the story is happening the way it is. This show didn't do the legwork.

Mayumi's original assertion that she can't use her eyes because it'll strain them - to the point that she will LOSE HER EYESIGHT - has pretty much fallen by the wayside. She uses her eyes constantly with only side comments of the straining portion. She's even the one actively volunteering to use her eyes, when it was made out originally to be something the leader/club members had to convince her to do. What was the point of treating the eye strain as a major point of tension that'll be worked on with the club's help/instruction if it's going to be tossed in the garbage immediately? It hasn't established how her using her eyes now is any different from how she was doing it before that was making her go blind, either.

I keep trying to reationalize the holes, being like, well, they're kids. Mayumi's 14. She probably wants to be special. So she's putting herself in harm's way to get attention, or to help, or something along those lines. But this motivation is not clearly established nor has she been characterized as attention seeking or overly self-sacrificing. Instead we're just left with one of the main facets of the show getting dumped with no explanation.

The last episode's casino adventure is once again brought up as if things happened, but they were never shown on screen, so I'm still pissed about it. If it's going to be a long-term part of the plot, why not just have the story play out on screen! What is this cut-away BS!

It feels like there's chunks of story missing. Did they decide to cut a bunch of stuff out that was actually shown in the manga? Or is the manga littered with weird decisions like this too? It's like reading a book that has pages torn out from it.

Also this is EXTREMELY nitpicky but the subs kept saying "drawing" for the process of creating a painting. Babes, the verb is paint. Someone RE/PAINTED the paintings. I get that they're using the verb 書く (かく/kaku) or whatever which is normally translated to draw, so I'm guessing that's the root cause of why the subs are fucked, but while that verb is correct when used for multiple mediums in Japanese, in English the discrete word paint is always used when the medium is paint, so in this case it needs to be translated to paint!!! There have been multiple instances of the subs having bad phrasing (CRUNCHYROLL OFFICIAL SUBS NOT FANSUBS) but this is the turning point where it pissed me off!!!!!!

I'm going insane
