▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Interview #152- @DeadlyRaven ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ![]() The Fake Kidnapper Obasan and part-time kidnapper. Also, the people at the Losers' Club can be very enthusiastic when it comes to sending questions for their friends :eyes: Interview conducted by: @TimeToRepent Tell us about yourself Hi, I don’t really feel comfortable revealing my real name here, but I usually go by Raven. I’m also known as Nini by a few people online and in real life. I’m a 30 years old woman (I know, I’m a grandma already) from Quebec in Canada. My first language is french so if you’ve ever seen me make some grammar mistakes, here’s your explanation why. I won’t reveal my occupation either, but I can talk about what I studied. I’m a college drop out so don’t expect this to be too fascinating. I spent a year learning social sciences then switched for a tourism program then took a break. A year or two after, I entered a language program where I learned: English, German, Italian and Spanish pretty intensely for two years. I also ended up dropping that program despite having good marks most of the time. Well, it’s been a long time and I now barely remember the languages I learned, except for English and a bit of Spanish. To be honest, I don’t really have many ambitions. Now, I just like to live my life day by day and try to deal with the less stress possible. As for my personality, I guess I’m a person of contradictions. I love people and I like getting to know them better, but I have a hard time interacting and talking with anyone. I love being in charge and organize things, but I get stressed easily. The three things that are pretty consistent about me are that I’m as curious as Chitanda Eru, I laugh way too much and I like to tease my friends all the time. I’m also an extremely dense person and a huge klutz. I feel like I’m describing an anime character, but that’s the kind of person I am. How did you choose your username? I didn’t really pick this username exclusively for MAL, it’s a name I’ve been using since high school. At the time, I was really into the movie “The Birds” (I’m still a tiny bit obsessed with that movie and Alfred Hitchcock actually) and I had to quickly pick a username for a random game tournament in a tiny computer club. I’m pretty sure it was either a Starcraft or a Warcraft 3 one, you can tell how old I am with this information. Anyway, I obviously had to pick a reference for my newly found fixation and “DeadlyBirds” isn’t the best sounding name, isn’t it? Ravens are beautiful birds anyway so I don’t regret my pick except for the “deadly” part, it sounds a tad too edgy for me now. I’m still using it all the time and it feels like a second first name to me. Could you give us a brief history of your time on MAL? For the majority of my years on MAL, I only used the website to keep track of the anime I was watching and barely frequented the forums. The first time I decided to become active and interact with the community was in May 2016 in a fantastic club called Antiquity Manga Club. I’m not exactly a social person and english being my second language, I was always nervous that posting in the big forums would go terribly wrong, but that place made me feel right at home. I spent so many hours just chatting with the members and talking about the manga we were reading, it was incredibly fun for me to be able to connect with them. I know how sappy I sound right now, but it’s the truth and that time was precious for me. After a while, I became an admin there and I also finally ventured on the forum games. I was surprised by how much fun it was, and again, I met some wonderful people there and started talking with a lot of them. I spent a while just exploring clubs and making people crazy with the number of times I was posting on the forum games threads in a row. Sorry people, I may or may not have a bad addiction to those games. Then Discord became popular and I joined a few servers and hung around with the same people I knew on MAL and a few new ones. One of my friends from the Antiquity Manga Club then asked me if I wanted to become the co-creator of a new club that we named The Moonlit Clearing. My time as an admin there was the busiest I ever was on MAL. During that time: I made hundreds of cards, organized weekly movie nights, made a discord server, tried my best to keep both the club and the server active, and I was pretty much a busybody who kept everything in order behind the scenes. It was really fun, but it ended up taking a huge toll on me and stressing me out too much so I ended up quitting after about five or six months. After that, I started taking long breaks from MAL and just frequented the forums once in a while. Now, I’m mostly on the forum games once again, but I’ve been trying to explore the other forums too. I’m also trying to revive the club who made me interact with so many people and hope I can welcome them the same way I was. Any users you like/dislike? Why? I wanted to make it short and just say that there was just way too many people to mention in the like part, but someone told me that was boring. To be honest, I could tag the vast majority of the forum games users here, but I won’t do that. I’ll try my best to name a few and I will leave out the users who aren’t active at the moment. @_Senpai - He’s an excellent new addition to the forum games and he’s just really sweet. @Abhorrent - I dream of the day I’ll have the upper hand on witty comments against him. @Bacardi-x-Cola - He’s always there to keep threads alive and he’s super friendly to everyone. @ClinT - He’s the good boy of MAL. @code - He always has something interesting to say and we share a love for bad and good movies. @Ericonator @KanonDE @yasgin - They’re all being grouped together because they always come in a trio in my head and it’s always interesting to see them all interact with each other. @Faintly - One of the shipping master and an incredibly funny person. @ituhata - He’s such a calm and charismatic person, it’s really hard to not like him. @karineyn - She just makes the forum games so lively by herself and the teasing is definitely needed. @Navi_HelloWorld - They’re just plain fascinating and I like the personas they created. @nicethings - I could read her rants for days and never get bored. @kiss - Because he’s my twin, but he’s not at the same time. He’s just a lot of fun to hang with and he always has a healthy dose of sarcasm up his sleeve ready to deliver at the best or worst moment. @SinisterOne - She quickly became one of my best friends and I thank her so much for being there for me for all this time. @Tchami - He’s the ultimate partner in crime, always happy to help me kidnap a few MAL users with the help of Lizzie the lizard. He’s also the pope. I don’t think you need more reasons. @TyraMisoux - He’s always been such a warm presence on the forum games and I hope he will stay that way for a long time. @UltimateFujoshi - She’s so nice and incredibly sweet. @WiseOne - He’s infecting everyone with his passion for music and it’s a good thing! @YaoiMaster - She’s always been such an amazing presence on the forums and I like her honesty a lot. There are very few users I dislike, including a stalker, but I really don’t feel like giving them any attention because they don’t deserve any. Interviewer's note: I feel kinda offended by the fact you didn't praise my shipping skills <.< How did you get into anime/manga? My boyfriend got into it first when we were in college and I started watching one or two alone then I discovered the original Hunter x Hunter. I was completely hooked after that and we started watching all kind of anime together. We started with a lot of shounen but ended up trying about any genre there is. Now, we mostly watch seasonals together. I got into manga a few years after getting into anime and now I pretty much read anything I find even remotely interesting. I currently have an obsession for historical manga and I wish there were more of them. What other hobbies do you have outside of anime/manga and MAL? I may or may not have way too many hobbies. I’m curious about everything so I always end up wanting to try different things. If I have the money and the time, I will absolutely try to go to any interesting concert, festival or play I can. If I can’t do that then I’ll just read, watch movies or play video games. I also pick up more creative hobbies once in a while, but I just get bored easily then I drop them before making anything and try something new. During the summer, I do a lot of cycling and just explore the places outside my city. How do you feel about how the site is run? Especially in regards to the moderators and admins. I don’t really have any complaints, I think the forums moderators are doing a good job the majority of the time. I just wish it wouldn’t take so long to add information to the database, but I know how time-consuming the job of the database moderators must be. From @kiss: You've been together as long as I have, yet you're holding off on getting married - is there any reason for this? I will either sound really cold or a hopeless romantic, but I’m fine with the love we have for each other and they are really no practical reason to get married at the moment. I would never ever accept to have a ceremony so our marriage would be: get the papers, get married in less than an hour then go home. I already feel pretty much married to him and growing old by his side is more than enough with or without the marriage part. From @kiss: And following the previous question, when are you gonna have some cute little kiddos? :3 That’s not gonna happen ever. We’re both not too fond of kids and we want our family to stay as it is. We both know what each other want and it’s not a life with children. I know it sounds lonely for some people, but we’re happy with that kind of life. From @kiss: I was pretty sure you had the offer before, what changed your mind on accepting the interview? To be honest, it looked really fun to do but it was making me nervous. I just recently started getting nominated for it and seeing some of my friends doing the interviews kinda gave me the push I needed to do it. From @kiss: I know being a girl on MAL is tough, how do you handle friends or people who end up falling for you and confessing? Any funny anecdotes you'd like to elaborate on? Well, first of all, people thought I was a guy for the longest time even though it was clearly written that I was a woman on my profile. Plus, I’m really dense so people might’ve tried to seriously flirt with me in the past but it probably went right over my head and I don’t have any memories of it. I never received any confession either. From @kiss: I've been told you have cataracts, leaving them alone will lead to severe vision loss - do you have any plans on getting them removed? Why are you bringing the old memes here, I’m literally shaking my head right now. I might be a 30 years old grandma, but I don’t have cataracts! From @kiss: How does it feel to know you've single-handedly given me the best shoulder and back work out regimen I could've asked for? You know, with all the office work you’re doing, I thought it would be nice that you get a bit of exercise so I’m glad you appreciate my role as the worst Rainbow Six player of all time. Remind me to destroy the armour before you get any the next time we play. :> From @Navi_HelloWorld: Why are you still here on MAL? Because I’m still having fun obviously if I ever stop having fun I guess I’m going to leave the forums but keep updating my MAL account because I don’t see myself getting tired of anime or manga anytime soon. From @Navi_HelloWorld: When will you add the new spoiler? Hmm, I want to make another one, but I kinda ran out of inspiration for them. If I make a new one, he has to top the fourth one in terms of memes. From @Navi_HelloWorld: What is the best drink to get drunk? It would probably be a stinger. It’s a great cocktail with cognac and crème de menthe. It’s a bit expensive to make so I haven’t drunk one in a long time, but you just kinda get drunk happily and there isn’t much of a hangover to it. It’s hard to explain, but yeah it’s a good drink. If you just want to get drunk easily: make a mix of vodka + orange juice or rum + coke. Best way to get wasted fast and not be broke the day after. From @WiseOne: How does it feel being a longtime user of MAL? My poor Ojisan, like I said earlier I’m not actually one of the OG users of MAL, I don’t really feel any different than the new users I guess. I just recognize a few more people when I go on the forums. From @ituhata: Do you amuse yourself by imagining what’s going through peoples minds as they click on the buttons that do nothing? Ohhhh yes, I do that all the time especially when I get comments about them and the people are so proud of having gone through them all. They’re a little trolly I know, but I really hope that they have fun despite all the weird things they may experience along the ride. From @ituhata: Why are you so infatuated with pointy chins? Who wouldn’t be? Pointy chins are glorious and should be seen as one of the wonders of the world. Look at them! They’re so… pointy! From @Tangerine: Is Tangerine still the best name ever? Okay, I have a list of best names ever and Tangerine is still pretty high up there. It’s just so simple and cute, I love it. From @Tangerine: Also, Am I famous too? lol jk Are you asking me to nominate you? From @code: There's a rumour going around that you enjoy rapping. Can you elaborate on this? What is your favourite song to rap? I wouldn’t expect anything less from you Code… I’m not sure if I enjoy rapping or just how funny it sounds when I rap. There’s only one song I can pick as a favourite and it’s the world success that is “Rappin’ for Jesus” by Pastor Jim Colerick. The lyrics are the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard. You have been on this website for almost 10 years. Being someone experienced here, what's your general impression on MAL's evolution across the years? To be honest, I don’t feel like the website really changed at all or it didn’t feel like it to me. I remember a bit when the profiles changed, but it had barely any importance to me because mine was almost empty and I didn’t really care about it. I started seeing more changes and they started to be more important to me as I became active so I just have a bit less than two years to compare. I really enjoyed all the activities the MAL admins and mods are preparing throughout the years. They’re putting a lot of efforts to make them interesting years after years. I’m also happy that they finally decided to include Discord as a way to talk, it’s much more agreeable than the old irc chat. The MAL Supporter thing is probably the biggest change I remember recently and I’m not too sure if it’s a bad or good thing, but as long as it helps keep the website alive, I’m okay with it. Do you have any anecdotes you'd consider the worth of sharing? I’m really not a good storyteller. I can reminisce on past memories with the people who were present, but I have a hard time explaining what happened in an interesting way to people who weren’t part of it. You just have to know that the MAL forums and their users made me an excellent kidnapper. A lot of my anecdotes would revolve around that. What on earth was up with that "Body Rolls" set? I always wondered the reason behind it. What? You didn’t like my glorious Body Rolls set? I’m a bit sad now. Well, I knew it would make a hell of an impression and may traumatize a few people, which it did and it was very amusing. I just wanted to create something funny for April fools and I guess I succeeded. The music video is great and really funny, you should all go watch it when you’re done reading this. Interviewer's note: I never said I disliked. It was just... unusual '-' And for those who wonder what the video is: How does being in a community in which you mainly find adolescents and young adults? I don’t really mind, I just talk to everyone the same way. I watch my sailor mouth more when I talk to adolescents though and there are certain topics I wouldn’t talk with them. That’s about the only difference it made for me. Where did your love for Alfred Hitchcock stem from? I’ve always loved movies a lot and I like thinking about how a movie is made. What is going on behind the shots? How did they make that effect? All that kind of questions go through my head when I watch a movie and if you see me really enjoying a beautiful scene, I probably have sparkles in my eyes. The first Hitchcock movies I’ve watched was “The Birds” and I just couldn’t believe the creativity that went into some of the scenes. Hitchcock tried so many innovative things in his movies, it’s incredible. I get hypnotized when I rewatch or watch any of his movies. How was your spell at Antiquity Manga Club and The Moonlit Clearing? What do you like the most about both clubs? What is managing them like? Both are very different clubs so my experience with both was also extremely different. Antiquity was already more or less dead when I joined so I just interacted with a few people, but it was a very relaxing place. TMC was made in the hope that it would become a huge club with a lot of members and interactions. I liked how calm Antiquity was, it was just a relaxing place with a few regulars dropping in the chat. When I started managing it, it was only stressful because it was my first time being an admin anywhere on MAL. The only things I had to do were making a poll for the monthly manga and announce which one was chosen. I just had to read and talk with the few remaining members. TMC grew at a rhythm I never expected and I guess that’s one of the things I liked about it, it was lively and always changing. I was finally able to share (maybe I forced it a little~) my love for bad movies with other people in that club and those were the best simulwatch I organized. I was also able to become more creative with photoshop and tried all kind of things while making cards. Managing the club was really hard though. The more users there are in a club, the harder it is to make all of them happy. I wanted the other admins and officers to feel at home and give their own ideas, but it never really worked too. I feel like some of them were intimidated by me. I think the club is still doing really well and I’m happy it does. Do you see yourself leaving MAL in a near future? I see myself taking a few breaks, but leaving completely? No, I don’t think so. I like the community a lot and it’s just a place I enjoy spending my free time on. Is there something unasked you would like to talk about? I’m very surprised by the lack of lewd questions from my friends, I’m proud of them for once. Any feedback on the interview format? Not really, it’s a nice format and it was fun. Can you recommend us 3 members who we can choose from to interview next and briefly explain why you would love to read their interviews? @code - I’m really surprised he hasn’t done one yet, but now that he’s an interviewer I feel like he really should do one. @kiss - He’s pretty well known on MAL and I’m 100% sure his interview would be interesting. @SinisterOne - She’s a complex person and usually has a lot to talk about. End of the interview. Thank you for your time~ |

| Great interview, and I agree - I'm disapopinted in the lack of lewd questions as well. Not sure why I didn't think of any (( er... well... actually maybe it's good I didn't, would hate for some people to get wind of them. . . .. . )) :unamused: Still curious as to what you actually do for a job, and would've liked to see you elaborate more on your MAL history, but well, you know me, I'm just nosy :> Glad you ended up returning and glad to have you as a friend - need more people in their THIRTIES to even out all the little ones ..... yes... thirties :weary: |
