I had a feeling that was going to happen. Sano can't leave, he's too...well I don't even know what importance he is.

If I said I didn't shed a tear this episode, I'd be a liar. This is what true friendship means, this is what the Revolution meant, this is what atonement is... I can't even describe what I'm feeling right now. Kenshin, Sano and Katsu, I'll never forget. The Sekihoutai, and Captain Sagara are watching over you... I'm literally having a hard time forming speech, this really hit my weak spot. The entire episodes OST just made it overkill for me.

5/5

Glad to see Katsu reform his ways and Sano and Kenshin on good terms again, they need no words, the bond they share reflects through their eyes. That final picture of Captain Sagara...

This storyline is deeply political; it's about the legacy of the revolution and what should be the legacy, but it doesn't actually touch any of the politics (and I doubt it has the brains to).

Kenshin isn't a supporter of the government regardless of the fact that he helped bring it about by fighting in the civil war. Regardless he stops Sano and Katsu from attacking the government. The only reason he gives for this is that Katsu's bombs will involve innocent people. This is in-character, but I don't know if I buy his reasoning. I don't know anything about this Internal Affairs building (which is or was presumably a real place), but from what we're shown of it, it's pretty isolated, with a large yard and a high wall between that and the street. How could bombing that affect innocent people, either through flying debris or though the spread of fire? I imagine isn't even anyone working there at the middle of the night.

The ending makes it seems like an argument against violence has been made, but it's not actually there. It's just a conventional shonen anime "battle of best friends" with a tight-lipped Kenshin and then Sano and Katsu start rambling about being wrong about everything.

The series is struggling against its real-world setting. Obviously, the Meiji government wasn't toppled by another revolution, so Sano and Katsu can't be allowed to actually do anything of the sort, but that makes it the story's job to give a good explanation of why not. It doesn't.

I think Kenshin has tried to change things by means of violence and it has backfired for him, so he doesn't want others to make the same mistakes.

But generally, yeah it's a shonen, simple enough for young boys to understand. There isn't going to be any deep political stuff here afaik so if you're looking for that you should look into some seinen material.

Yep, felt the same. The filler's entertaining enough fluff, but I hope the show doesn't just revert back to that (still don't know what to expect from the upcoming mega-arc).

There's one thing I really haven't been able to understand about the series thus far: why are there so many against the Meiji government? I didn't know anything about the Meiji Revolution or its surrounding history before watching Rurouni Kenshin, so I've learned as I've gone along. As I've learned, all research only really points to how beneficial the Meiji Restoration was for Japan and how mandatory it was to help Japan flourish.

Why, then, are there so many in the series who so adamantly detest it? More than just a few samurai who find they don't have the skills to fit in a world that no longer needs them, but honest people like Katsu who find the government to be corrupt. The series hasn't done a good job at even showing why or how the government is corrupt, aside from some douchebag police officers in one of the early episodes. Did the people at the time truly question the purpose of the Meiji restoration?

Furthermore, even if the government is corrupt, surely the anti-imperialists have some idea of how corrupt the Japan was under the Tokugawa Shogunate as well. Was the point of the Meiji Restoration not to pick the lesser of two evils? Why, then, do they wish to dethrone the Meiji government after helping restore it through elimination of the Tokugawa Shogunate? And what do they suppose they would replace it with? Pure anarchy?

It doesn't make sense to me.

I don't know much about Meiji era either, however there are some things that I can relate to and answer in my own opinion. The thing is, when you overthrow a government, you don't overthrow it to "pick the lesser of two evils", you do it to have something that's not evil at all. In this regard, these people have put their lives at risk to drive the evil out, only to find out that all their efforts resulted in the evil just being replaced by another sort of evil. Kenshin is a representation of people who have tried to drive evil out by force, and have been since convinced that you can not change something like this by pure force...

I can tell these because something very similar is going on right now in my home country...

Aww, that was sweet and sad. But I'm so glad Sano's friend didn't die or something, everything ended on good terms. ^^ That pic of Sagara at the end added to the feelings in this ep.

Underage people drinking! Kaoru can't stand alchohol xD
That was hilarious. And so cute :3

Sano got owned by Kenshin, again. Without his sword, he didn't stand much of a chance. And I'm sure he knew it, he was looking forward to be stopped by Kenshin. It was his only way out after all.

Wow, what a great episode. I nearly cried, I was close. Man the scenes of Kenshin and Sano fighting, very deep and touching. And Katsu too, caring and worrying for his loyal friend it and the backstory and the politics were the icing on the cake. Wow, just wow. Dare I say, this might be one of the best episodes I've ever watched of ANY anime. Wow, was thoroughly surprised by how great this episode was. Gave me feels, didn't cry but I did have feels for sure. 100/5 episode. Amazing.

I finally understand that Kenshin is afraid of another violent revolution. He wants things to be further reformed, but he doesn't want to see anyone die. The episode was great.

Considering that he specialises in fist fighting and used to have that huge sword, Sanosuke sure looks meager.

Glad Sano is finally done with getting revenge on what happened to the Sekihotai, it really is just an unfortunate happening of war, nothing can be done, really....

All it takes was Kenshin's pretty face for Tsukioka to be like "ok, I'll stop questioning you." Trololol. This was a good episode.

i really just want sano to get his sword back. i'm glad his friend learned a lesson and is trying to publish papers but it'd be better to do it under a pseudonym, like franklin did with poor richard's almanac.

one of the best episode so far.
The comedy , the serious, the conscientiousness ... loved it !
Morpheus: The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work... when you go to church... when you pay your taxes.
It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

Neo: What truth?

Morpheus: That you are a slave, Neo.

This episode was so beautiful. Even without knowing too much about the contextual history, it's obvious how fraught the situation is for many people. Kenshin, who thought he was fighting for something better, only to be wracked with guilt and reminded at every turn how this government also treats its citizens unfairly. Then Sano, who thinks redemption is in vengeance. Two close friends trying to cope in wildly different ways. And it played out in less than 25 minutes, with a cute drunken interlude, to boot. One of my favorite anime episodes.
