SheyCroix - Watching which animes you watched since 2016.(What a job)
Well hello everyone. Today I am here to present my interview with SheyCroix. I can easily say this is one of the most intresting interviews I made today. Reading it was a fun ride.
I hope you too will like it. Now let's start.
Interview conducted by: sasalx
Could you tell us about yourself?
That would be confidential 0= but I will try to give out general info xD
mm I'm a twenty-something y/o creature. I finished college (did a MBA) and am currently working odd jobs and/or on my own since the field for which I studied sucks here if you don't have enough experience and/or money. My birthplace is in the Caribbean and I speak, or at least understand pretty well, two languages : Spanish and English. As you can see so far I don't like giving out real info that could be used to identify me online, so please be understanding =)
What else? I really like the colors green, purple and black. No real reason behind that. I also like to isolate myself sometimes. I find it rather refreshing to be alone for x periods of time.... but not too prolonged since humans need interactions with others to keep our brain healthy and sane. Talking about that I have few acquaintances I can call friends since I'm not the type to enjoy socializing that much anymore. It tends to be a bit of a job to do, mostly since you have to worry about appearance. Yeah, I know this is something that shouldn't matter but sadly I was raised like that. Not something that I can change overnight. But I have a contradicting fact related to that. I enjoy flirting! How weird can I get, right? xD I mean, I like writing with people and flirt jokingly. I enjoy conversations like that. I also like to look at people I consider pretty/beautiful/handsome. Not the typical, but those that fit my preference (which are a bit hard to describe).
Changing the topic my family is rather medium sized and most of the members are female. I don't live with my parents but I don't live alone either. I'm single ♥ I don't have pets since I have a sad history regarding them. Interested? Well the thing is that most of them have died by external factors T_T One died hanging from her collar, another one was hit by a car, another was devoured alive by two dogs, another was crushed by a huge glass, another bitten to death by a pit bull..... such luck, so why bother getting hurt any longer. Not worth it.
Oh right, I like experimenting and trying out new things (to a certain extent) as long as they are safe. So when I was younger (middle/high school) I went through several musical phases and lived the part. Being a rocker, a bad emo copy, Rastafari (superficial), a rapper, with urban music and many others. That ended with me liking many musical genres...
Then the rest is pretty boring. I don't know what else about me would be interesting to share.
How did you choose your username?
When I first came to the online world I was half-innocent and simple minded. One of the first thing I was told to do was to adapt an alternate self. Another me that would only belong to the online world. That being should be totally different from who I am, made up of about 75% lies and thus should have a different name that would contain (hidden) a part of my real name so as to be reminded to not get totally lost there. SO given all this I came up with this username < SheyCroix > which contains abbreviations of my name mixed with French and another island.
Could you give us a brief history of your time on MAL?
Sure. As you can check in my profile (please go, give me some views) I joined back in 2011. I don't remember how I stumbled upon the site. Once I had my account created I left it there on it's own since I didn't use it that much. I came back for a short time during 2012 and I think I started to actively use it in 2013. I still managed to keep track of my lists since I have a local list too. Then during 2013 I started joining lots of clubs.
I was of the idea that the one being part of the most clubs was cool... wrong! I came to realize that was a waste of time and left all of them. But since I wasn't the type to check the forums often I got bored of just coming to the site to only update my lists so I started joining clubs focused on particular interest of mine. Most of them were BL clubs, the reverse harem one, those related to types (shorts club, NYA, LA, YATP, and so on). While getting involved there I discovered the card requesting fad that was going on and became involved with that too. Then I started to crazily request cards from all the clubs I joined and made a small collection. After some time I tried my hand at making crappy ones.... but later on I got tired of that too, stopped requesting and left the clubs that focused on only that.
After some (more) time I left all clubs in which I wasn't actively participating (yet again). During that time I tried my hand at being an admin in several others (clubs). At first it was mostly deliveries and newsletter related things. Then back in 2015 I created a challenge of my own and joined the 2015 Anime Watching Challenge as a participant. The challenge I created is still running in two different clubs but the original one was closed since there was a difference in opinion with the direction the club wanted to take with their new staff.... and I was made to leave. Sadly, but I think they are still doing good so good luck if you ever read this. I enjoyed my time there. When the challenge closed there I thought of stopping and not continuing ... the challenge ran for a year there so it was a bit sad and I started looking for alternatives. Maybe running it on my blogs or looking for a new club. There was when I found the Anime Watching Challenges club. It was rather small back then, pretty new too. That was around April 2016 and the club was created on February same year. The fun thing is that it was a random chance! I remember the creator of the club (Riho) contacted me via PM, which made me learn of their club. Then it was like a ray of hope which till this day I'm grateful of getting. (Thanks for the chance!)
Then about this challenge I made it's interesting, I mean it's been running for almost two years. I have the links on my profile, under < promoting > so check that out too ;D
So after being a participant for the 2015 Anime Watching Challenge (AWC) I got pretty excited for the one that would take place the following year. I was really looking forward to it... if I remember correctly I saw here and there comments that the same person would run the manga one, but there was none for the anime version. The staff were busy and it wasn't getting enough attention (management wise) or something. That made me reach Kineta and Luna to tell them I wanted to help with the challenge and well, the rest is recent story. I hosted the 2016 AWC pretty much alone which around November-December 2016 backfired and became hell. There were so many entries!!!!!! so many finishing the challenge... thankfully I got a huge helping hand from fellows inspectors from the AWC club and I managed to finish during early January 2017 (replying all revisions and such).
So thankfully I'm also hosting this year AWC with a new helping hand from a fellow user. For this year tsuyokunaru (hosting manga version) and I prepared a lot for it, to make it more interesting (even if at first some strongly expressed their distaste) and I can say I'm happy with the result. I do admit at first I felt different but right now I'm enjoying this~ So if you aren't taking part you should hurry and sign up! What are you waiting? xD
Any users you like/dislike? Why?
Of course. I would lie if I say there are none in both.
There are many friends here with whom I have a great time chatting any other day. I won't go on mentioning but since here in MAL you can find many different personalities it's rather fun keeping a longer conversation with most of them. But outside of MAL, using others apps. Let's admit it's rather inconvenient to chat here. As for finding them they come from some of my clubs, random encounters or from some of the challenges I take part in.
As for users I dislike is not that strong of an emotion since it's wasted energy, but there are some that I rather avoid and that makes me look for a way to move from that page faster. Again, I won't go mentioning them (it would be an honor for them) but as for a reason it's rather simple. It's people that have insulted me before, trying to be a smart***, a party popper, someone that can't take advice from others and get mad, those that if they don't get things their way they get mad, those that simply avoid you without reason and so on. There are many that qualify for this.
How did you get into anime/manga?
As most would say I started watching anime when I was young, without really knowing that they came from Japan. When I learned what anime was I started with some well known : Naruto and One Piece. Given I was most interested in other things it was a casual watch (also our internet connection sucked back then). After things got better and I started surfing the web more MAL became one of two reason to watch more and new things. The other was another website.
As for manga, like I said before, I wanted to try new things. I think the first one I started was One Piece... but then my manga career became BL oriented so let's not talk much about it hahaha.
What other hobbies do you have outside of anime/manga and MAL?
That's a bit hard to say. Those two takes most of my time. Others things I enjoy is playing video games (Android, Xbox 360 and Wii), board games, cards games, puzzles, Letter Soup games, Sudoku, reading, listening to music, trying new candies and looking at pretty/beautiful/handsome people xD oh and watching sports from time to time and looking at the sea.
How do you feel about how the site is run? Especially in regards to the moderators and admins.
Since the site changed companies it has gotten better. Now you can see there's more improvement, or rather, actual improvement compared at how it was before. In general it's a pleasant experience to be here. Yes, there are some things/features I can complain about, things I want, but I will leave that for the Suggestions forum. As for the mods/admins there's not much I can say, really. Not enough interaction to complain. From those few I have interacted with they are really nice fellows and they do such an awesome job, donating their time to make this site better and one that most can enjoy. I can only say "good job and keep it up". You guys have my moral support =D
You mentioned odd jobs. Can you exlain those jobs? Pretty sure people wonder what kind of jobs are.
I can't mention all of them. It's stuff people ask me to help with and I get paid in exchange for doing so. They vary, yes, but they are safe jobs and tend to be legal. Just in case I refer legal in the sense that I could be asked to rip a movie or something. Nothing extreme. As for the safe ones it can be driving as a taxi, staying with someone during their medical appointment, babysit and stuff like that.
One day Kineta said you can be a mod. Would you accept it? Why?
I would politely decline. I don't have the passion to deal with that much sh... work. They have lots do to and have my respects. I have enough already hosting the Anime Watching Challenge and others activities.
Do you think you will stop participating forums on MAL in near future? Why?
I do hope I can stop using MAL in the future. I don't think it will be soon since I don't see myself not watching anime anymore, but I have considered this. Maybe it will start with me being less active and participating less here and there until I can finally say goodbye without regrets........ but I will probably be a grandma before that happens. I might even end introducing my kids, their spouses, their kids, their kids spouses and so on. I do hope to live that long xD As for the reasons since I don't want to spend most of my time online in the near future. My family and those around me might need more of my attention.
How did you come to the position of running the Anime Watching Challenge, and how is the position like?
By @jyuushimatsu
I briefly mentioned this when talking about my time on MAL but before the 2016 AWC started, I started looking for information about who will host the challenge, when would it start and all that. While researching here and there I didn't find anything that it would continue or that someone took charge of it. By then I offered my help to prepare for the challenge or whatever was needed, but kinda ended in charge of the anime version haha.
If you want me to be honest it can be time consuming. We have many, many participants. If you have experience in the forums you know we have very polite users and at the same time the obnoxious folks. So, if they participate in the challenge I have to communicate with them once they finish their challenge (not always).... Not everyone has the same patience and understanding. Not everyone take this as a mere challenge. Not everyone understands that I'm just another user and I have things to do. So, you can pretty much imagine. Last year was very chaotic, specially the last few months. Last year I was insulted, but at the same time I received lots of support and positives vibes from the participants. That was one of the things that motivated me to continue hosting this challenge with my friend tsuyo (the one hosting the manga version). So far this year had a bit of a bumpy start since the format of the challenge changed, but most of the participants enjoy the challenge and that's enough to make us happy.
Do you see yourself continuing to run the Anime Watching Challenge for the next few years?
Maybe? It all depends on what happens in the coming years. This challenge requires attention all the year and being the one hosting, even if I get help, I have to be constantly active. I do hope I can continue
What makes you participate in the anime and manga challenges every year?
By @DeadlyRaven
Mere personal interest. I'm already used to completing challenges (given I participate in the Anime Watching Challenges club) and the fact that I'm hosting the anime one and my friend host the manga one... Also most likely that it will feel weird not taking part. It's only been three years since I started participating (probably since the challenge started).
