After reading the manga ''No longer human'' a small adaption of the book with the same name by the author Dazai Osamu. there was this saying that really bothers me.
''Why do we have to eat?''
- so that we won't die.
''So we work in order to eat, because we don't want to die''
It just makes me think how sad and small we all are, we work in order to have happiness. You don't even know what you ate last week do you? why is it? because it's normal to us right? It's normal to eat and drink for us.
isn't this sad in a way? We work to not die, but why do people don't want to die?
We seek to know the unknowable, yet still nobody wants to die. I don't get humans, why do we bully if we our self are afraid.
I don't quite get why I made this topic, but feel free to respond.

Mirotokiwa, I suggest you put your shoes on, hail a cab (or call Uber) and get your ass to a bar. You're thinking way too much. And nothing inhibits thinking better than alcohol. Cheers!

Every time I see something this, instead of being thought-provoked I can't help but shake my head and think "What you're only realising how little your existence means now?"

Subconscious willful ignorance dictates that people believe they're important, sort of like how a fat person tells themselves that fat is beautiful, because in human-nature running from the painful truth is far easier than accepting it.

A pair of eyes appear disguised,
I take flight and stay high in paradise,
With bad luck, snake eyes, a pair of dice.
I'm paralyzed, she speaks twice, a pair of lies,
It's parallel, apparent hell of parasites.

I read No Longer Human after watching Bungou Stray Dogs and now it's one of my favourites.

I think Dazai was definitely different from most people. What would usually be basic survival instinct to us, would be a chore to him. He struggled to understand what it meant to be alive. But the thing about existential nihilism is that you are either liberated or tormented by it. He clearly belonged to the latter.

And now I had become a madman. Even if released, I would be forever branded on the forehead with the word "madman," or perhaps, "reject."

Disqualified as a human being.
I had now ceased utterly to be a human being.

For most people, eating is not about "not dying", it's about living. It's about having the sufficient macronutrients, vtamins and minerals to kicks ass in doing what you want.
Also there's no meaning in living. Everybody dies. Fearing death is cowardly. It's going to happen anyway. The only sensible thing you can do is just buckle up and enjoy the ride while it lasts.
I HAVE TWO RULES:

RULE ONE: I'M ALWAYS RIGHT
RULE TWO: IF I'M WRONG, REFER TO RULE ONE...

That is a really good point, we also cant make our own food or use chemical processes to keep ourselves alive.
The real question scruf is why do plants turn sunlight into food if they are just going to die anyway?

We need energy (calories) for our bodies to preform their functions and to move the mass of our bodies and anything else we need to move. The reason we don't want to die is that it would prove us to be too weak to pass on our genes and would dishonor our famiries. After reproducing we must continue to survive until our offspring reproduce themselves. After becoming grandparents our evolutionary duties are completed, but until our social duties of careers and/or volunteer work are done we will still maintain the will to survive and will have no reason to go until that happens. Many people will die soon after they retire, but many others will keep living afterwards as they may do volunteer work or babysit their grandchildren. Retired citizens are essentially "Not in Education, Employment, or Training", but some people may still rely on them for different things.

Basically the reason we want to live is for other people. Some may kill to survive, but it's only certain people who are worth surviving for.

Nope its not sad. Everything happens for a reason and life is what you make of it. Our lives revolve around far more than sustenance...!

We are a species which can have great affect on the planet. A mundane existence is one which just perpetuates (birth, grow, reproduce, repeat etc). A wasted existence is one which does not improve the world nor perpetuate so that a better person may be born. A great existence is one lead for good (one which improves life on this planet, like building a wildlife sanctuary or improving human rights or simply bringing happiness & joy to good people around you etc).

What kind of existence do you want to live?
Because right now it sounds like you are feeling rather empty inside (like you don't have much going on in life at the moment and are getting into a depressive rut etc).

Mirotokiwa said:
I don't get humans

Lol you realize you are one of those right?

Mirotokiwa said:

Bully- how?
I wouldn't call having a will to live "bullying" yourself unless you lead a very self-loathing existence (even then its not you're will to live that's bullying you but rather its your lack of will to continue that is the real demon).

Mirotokiwa said:

No that's cool. It seems like you're just going through some philosophical "pondering life" in general stuff at the moment. And there's nothing wrong with that- IMO its better to question existence and the universe (than to live life without a single thought or concern to the bigger picture of things etc).

By the sweat of thy brow, thou shall eat thy bread!

Why don't we want to die? Why do we have to work, and eat to live?

Because paradise in the garden of Eden was too hard for humans. They had to muff it up, and so needed the curse of the ground from God in order to be saved.

Everything, every creature works to eat/drink so not to die. They hunt, they dig, they fly, they go from one flower to an another, climb.. We are no exception.

We don't wanna die because we don't know what's gonna happen next and we only know this realm. No creature would willingly die, they fight. It's just how livings built, in order to survive and go forward. I don't think it's sad at all, I think it makes things more valuable.

We work to be happy and healthy, and in our short lives that is not sad, that is good. Who knows when any of us will die, right^^

Fuck off.

Ahem.

OT: Being alive is an arbitrary term. It's not actually a real concept, same as human morality. Practically nothing separates a living animal from a functioning robot. Dying is not the problem, that's such a meaningless thing really, millions of your cells die every second OP. Just because something meets the requirements to be considered alive, doesn't mean it's life holds any actual value. The problem is causing sentient things to cease functioning. This is a reason why vegans exist. Plants aren't sentient. So they're okay with eating them. But then again, insects aren't sentient either, it's also possible to make a lot of animal products without hurting animals... Yea vegans don't make any sense actually.

Anyways, what justifies us eating other animals? There are a lot of reasons you can come up with.

1. It's naturally how the human body is made to operate.
2. As the most superior lifeform with the highest level of sapience, our lives are worth more than all the animals we eat.
3. All of the animals and plants in this planet work together, competing with one another to create a complex ecosystem of life. Everything has the right to kill and eat another living thing. This is the law of nature, and every living thing on this planet agrees to this law the moment they are born.

You don't really need a reason. I eat animals because they taste good, not because I think it's morally correct. But that's okay.

Life is meant to be experienced and enjoyed. That means the things on this planet with the most intelligence are the ones to experience and enjoy this world the most. Whatever is the most intelligent thing in this universe, is therefore the most valuable. Humans are the most intelligent animals so far, we're smart enough to question ourselves and the world we live in. But that unfortunately leads to angst since humans are at that fine line of "sapient creature, but still a filthy lowly animal" phase. We're just smart enough to recognize fundamental problems in our existence, but not smart enough to fix them. But don't worry, human profess is going well enough. There's no need to worry since at the pace humans are going, we won't have to cause suffering in order to survive in the future. Or the technological singularity comes and humans get replaced terminator style. But that's okay too, that means a superior creature that deserves this planet more than us now exists.

Anyways I probably could've said something that made more sense but I don't care. Fucking stop being a pussy.

We eat in order to survive. Survival is an instinct, and in some cases, it has become a chore. Survival is just a continuous cycle of hell, and you should take it as you will. We have to work because if we don't work, we can't provide for basic necessities, and when that happens, we aren't able to meet our primary needs, which leads to unhappiness, sickness, and death etc.

Have you thought about reading into antinatalism? You're on your first steps into pessimistic philosophy! That's great and I love this philosophy. I suggest looking that term up.

Pessimism often gets distorted as "boohoo life sucks" but it can go deeper. I think googling it will give you interesting reading material.

I knew you were talking about "No Longer Human" by reading the title. Dazai Osamu suffered severe depression and PTSD so his views aren't extreme or strange because of what he was going through. I liked the novel but the eating part from the chapter one didn't really get to me, I guess he was more depressed by how eating turned into a ritual with his family rather than the act of eating itself.

Hmm my opinion, Surviving is human nature it's normal for us.
We aren't cruel, what cruel is is the world. Cannibalism, eating other animals is normal by the rule of nature.
But I love hearing other opinions about such topics and reading them. It's lots of fun ;)
