Yes, it's that bad.

It has no purpose other than to be gore fanservice incest torture porn. That's it. And if that isn't enough to give it the 1 it deserves, it even does that badly.

It failed to achieve its goal, and its goal was a morally reprehensible one from the start. I wish this were an "it's so bad its funny" series, but unfortunately it's an "it's so bad it makes me physically ill that the people in charge of making it are profiting from it" series.

Nope. People just like to exaggerate things. The Censor were the biggest problem people had with it.

And after it was rated low, it was sorta of a trend to try and get it as low as possible.

It's not really just the censors that make it bad, but the fact that it's 4 minutes long and has no cohesive storyline going on.

Exactly. I don't see how being uncensored would change the fact that Pupa is badly written, badly voiced, has poor artwork, and is an all around hot mess of gratuitous gore and monster incest.

It having a 4 average is still too high in my opinion. I went in without worrying about the censorship, and I even saw it in HD, but it was just horrible. I was expecting it to be a bit bad, but this was just completely pointless and forced. The gore wasn't that well done or worth it alone for watching it. No character acted sensible and could be connected with sensibly. The plot elements were never explained and the focus shifted from going into the cannibalistic virus, to just presenting a rinse-and-repeat relationship of the two siblings.

The opening's pretty good, but that's about it.

I dont think the problem is only the censor...I mean, the show entirely was shit. I read the manga and although it wasn't the best thing it tells you what's actually going on which the anime fails massively.

It short enough that even though it was bad, at least it didn't waste much of your time. Gore was good if watched uncensored, and semi-decent soundtrack.

I actually gave it 6/10. Come at me elitists.

The gore looked like purple goo half of the time. The only actual disturbing scene was probably the stabbing of the newborn. And if 40 minutes is short enough to be considered snack-time, than why is Mars of Destruction at a 2 average when it is only 20 minutes? Mars of Destruction was as stupid and pointless as Pupa, but at lest Mars of Destruction was very conventional in its plot which made it actually slightly fun to watch, along with the stripped orchestra tracks since their copyrights are out of date.

Pupa focusing on attention by gore is more cheap-feeling with literally no explanation or justification for it, along with the gore not even being that good. You don't have to be an elitist to see that. I rated Sword Art Online a 6/10 and Mars of Destruction a 2/10 as they have things to them that rises them from of 1. Pupa has nothing that notable though to even make it a 2 in my eyes.

Pupa is rated very low but I don't think it should be. Length and notoriety are key factors in why it has been given such a bad rap. I don't think Pupa deserves a 1.

From this year, I actually think Minarai Diva and Glasslip are worse anime, because if those were shown at my anime club, people would sleep or demand to cut the screening short. Those type of shows are tedious and boring. We played Pupa at my anime club last night for Halloween and it ENTERTAINED because we were laughing and making snarky comments. I think we were more entertained with Pupa than the first three episodes of uncensored Terra Formars. Terra Formars had too much pointless talking, and the action scenes weren't animated at all. Episode 6 of Pupa had more action than episodes 1-3 of Terra Formars.

Pupa just has the notoriety. There are plenty of anime that are worse than Pupa, but this show had the pre-airing hype and failed to live up to it. As for length, I don't think Mars of Destruction and Skelter Heaven are the worst anime of all-time either. Again, those could be shown at the anime club for some laughs. I'd rather sit through Mars of Destruction than all 13 episodes of Glasslip.

Length doesn't affect me that much, and most of my criticisms to it don't even involve length. However, it might involve the terrible handling of its length, which would translate into a genuine bad trait. The show is debatably a 2/10 for me, but what I have rated as a 2 on my list I feel were more worthwhile viewings than this. Therefore, a 1/10. I can't name one good thing the show had to it.

And "notoriety" has nothing to do with it for me. I went into it expecting it to be at least somewhat good. I only heard people complaining about the 5-minute- length. That isn't close to enough to make me hate something so I decided to watch it randomly. It wasn't at all enjoyable like how Mars of Destruction might be slightly by it's dumb-fun style (which is barely anything). Pupa has nothing of the sort.

You can explain your reasons for giving it a 1 and no one can refute them. It's your list, after all.

http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?q=&type=1&score=1&c[0]=a&c[1]=b&c[2]=c&c[3]=d&c[4]=e&c[5]=f&gx=0&o=3&w=1&o=3&w=2

However, I was looking at the big picture. From that link above, Pupa is the lowest-rated TV show on MAL. Currently, more than 46k people have it on their list. This is by far more popular than any of the other shows rated below 6.00 except Glasslip. Pupa got a combination of pre-airing hype along with word-of-mouth, grabbing a number of people who have watched it only because it's the "worst anime of the year".

What Pupa has going for it is that there are so many ratings that the trolls who gave it a 10 are drowned out, so its score is more accurate than the sea of garbage shows out there that only have a few hundred ratings. For example:

http://myanimelist.net/anime/1200/Gun-dou_Musashi/stats

If you don't know what this show is, check out the opening on YouTube. This show is so bad that no real fansubber has dared to touch it. But no one has heard of it, so the 25% who trolled the rating and gave it a 10 are heavily weighted.

I think if enough people actually went through the pile of garbage anime and rated them appropriately, Pupa wouldn't be on anyone's list of "worst anime of all time". Neither would Mars of Destruction. It's just that people can't be bothered to watch truly horrific piles of vomit like Gun-dou Musashi, Run=Dim, Super Milk-chan, and Cosmopolitan Prayers. Those shows are only rated higher than Pupa because of obscurity. It doesn't help that none of those are on Crunchyroll, either.

I still think that for 2014 anime, Glasslip and Minarai Diva are worse than Pupa, but there will be people who can't give Glasslip less than a 5 because the production values were fantastic. And no one bothered to watch Minarai Diva in the first place.

I originally gave Pupa 7/10, but the ending was too shitty so I lowered it.

I rate more subjectively than objectively, so as long as it kept me entertained, it would be at least decent. But to each their own I guess. I gave School Days 10/10 and Durarara 3/10. I have no regrets about either.

Oh ok. If you talk on the wide scale of things, maybe it doesn't deserve a 1/10. I wouldn't know for certain though. My rating scale changes as I watch more content, as the more things I watch, the more complicated rating becomes which makes me shift scores.

Towards the whole of MAL: many people have many different rating scales, and there is a large percentage that only uses 1, 5, and 7-10. It takes some thought to use the other numbers, and many people don't even want to bother, or have looked at GameSpot and IGN too much and got the impression that anything below a 7 is horrible and a waste of time. It starts from being too big of a fan of something and feeling bad of giving something too less below a perfect score if the person enjoyed it to an extent.

The average scores of many anime on MAL isn't that trustworthy and I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's much more reliable to look at high-compatibility lists and see what they think. Obscure anime aren't too relevant in the total scores, as you can imagine all of the popular ones are the ones that people bother with. The obscure ones ratings are controlled by the percentage of MAL hipsters and the random few who just want to see the past of anime.

Just because of that, however, I wouldn't say Pupa will certainly not have a 4/10 or lower. A 4/10 itself is being extremely generous in my eyes already, an it could possibly stay at the bottom with all of the obscure ones.

I will really be surprised if Glassip is that bad. You've now made me want to watch it. I'd also check out that obscure one if it was subbed. From watching some of it here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixLJYNnCF1k), I think I would still enjoy it more than Pupa. Looks like a 3/10 to a 2/10 for me. And if the lacking quality is the main degrading factor for it, why does Voices of a Distant Star have this rating?

http://myanimelist.net/anime/256/Hoshi_no_Koe

(I would call that the most overrated anime I've seen)

Firstly, I used to think objective ratings were impossible, but now I see what the issue was with the word. The issue is it's like saying "wet water". Every rating is subjective and objective to an extent, so using either word as an adjective is being redundant most of the time.

Anyways, my view on Pupa isn't solely objective. The things I critique directly affected my enjoyment, so while your higher enjoyment of it isn't wrong, what I say isn't particularly irrelevant to enjoyment itself.

Pupa kept me vaguely interested enough to watch the whole thing, but that could just be because I was watching it all put together in one episode. If I had to click a few clicks for each next five-minutes, I would've never finished it.

Still haven't seen School Days. It started with a bunch of hate, but now I see more praise than anything. I won't go in with any expectations of either.

As long as you haven't been spoiled, at least of the ending, you should enjoy it, or hate it thoroughly. School Days is rated low because people can't tell the difference between a poorly crafted character, and character they don't agree with. It's like me hating Anohana because it made me sad. The show is just doing what it was meant to do, with a satisfying ending.

Sounds to me that whether or not this deserves a 1 or not its still bad enough to not be worth watching. Even a 4 or 5 is something to skip after all. But I've got to say the average score of this anime leaves me simply aghast. Yikes.

No, it's not that bad... it's actually worse.

I can understand MAL not including a 0 score, since in 99.99% of cases it would only be used for trolling purposes. However, this is one anime that might actually deserve it.

I had to see this trainwreck because it got so much "negative hype" -- I was hoping it might fall into a "so bad it's good" kind of category, where it's worth seeing just to revel in its overwhelming crapitude. But, no, this is actually "so bad that it's actually bad."

The *only* good thing is that it was just 36 minutes wasted. So, there's that, at least.

I have a strong stomach for guro/vore (eheheheheh), and incestuous undertones have been encoded into much of anime for years now, so I don't comprehend how people can take this lil' anime so darn seriously. I'll admit I found it strangely mesmerizing. Yeah, it's all kinds of bad, but I really wasn't looking for horror or a laugh. I expected... well, I expected what it was, and I basically got it!

Honestly, I kinda appreciated the whole sister-literally-eats-brother gimmick. The whole thing just ended up feeling like some sort of gory animesque arthouse film where the acting's BS and the chronology doesn't make sense. Reminds me of Nijigahara Holograph but like 80 times worse and vaguely, slightly funny. I still like it. It's a shameful pleasure, I guess. Like eating your brother!

~This anime makes me feel like I'm literally eating my own brother!~

Nope, it's not that bad.

The animation and production values are good. The artwork is good and original, almost like the original Steins Gate visual novel (which many VN fans would say had better artwork than the Steins Gate anime). The voice acting is decent. And it also has an original plot, unlike most of the uninspired anime plots out there.

The biggest flaws with the show are that it is full of distasteful gore and torture, the plot is paper thin (which isn't surprising given its short length), and the characters are unlikeable. Basically, many find it sick and morally reprehensible, and it's too short to justify something like that. And it also doesn't help with the internet meme culture always exaggerating everything to astronomical proportions.

I wouldn't say it's a good anime, but it's not a very bad one either. It's just about okay. And it's at least better than a lot of uninspired harem, ecchi, hentai and pedo garbage out there. There are lots of anime that are worse than this.

i don't think its bad. i gave it a 6. the show was able to keep me entertained throughout. i don't get why people say it has no plot. it tells a good story of a brother protecting his sister. he made a lot of sacrifices for his sister(although a bit extreme...). i like the design of yume too, she looks a bit like yui from k-on with different artwork. i guess i could understand why people don't like this. it's not a show for weak minded people.
