Witch Watch

In ancient times, some witches married their familiars, who had taken human form, giving birth to a lineage of ogres. One such ogre is Morihito Otogi, who while appearing completely human, still retains the inhuman strength of his bloodline. Nico Wakatsuki is a young witch and Morihito's childhood friend, but as part of her education, she had to go to the Witches' Holy Land to train and part ways with Morihito .

Years later, just before Morihito's first year of high school, Nico returns home with one goal in mind: to claim him as her familiar. While most witches choose a cat or a bat, Nico has her heart set on Morihito in more ways than one. Although seemingly oblivious to her true feelings, Morihito and Nico end up living together under the same roof with both of Morihito's parents elsewhere. While reluctant at first, Morihito accepts his new role, determined to help Nico seamlessly fit back in with human society and protect her from fated disaster.

C R E A T I V I T Y. Is the word that define this anime.

This anime remind me of those classics western cartoon, like tom and jerry, with its comedy. You never knew what dumb out of pocket stuff they gonna pull out, and its genuinely refreshing in the anime comedy space right now. With the support of very well done and perfect for the show good animation and sound directing. This is one of the best comedy show this year.

FULL REVIEW:
First of all, let me address the creativity. The comedy creativity in this show is, lets say unique in the anime space. ... It is not parodying other stuff, it is not just character interaction, its not just sexual, but most of it is from the playful vibrant animations, sound design, and the most unserious random out of pocket scenario ever in anime. [Creativity and Comedy 10/10]

Next is the directing. This play VERY well to my point above. The pretty good vibrant and lively animations, make this show not pale. With also the goofy and somewhat classical orchestral style of sound directing, is what make I said its kinda like tom and jerry or Mr Bean. The animation is good most of the time, and they also know when to spend the budget for the extravagant scenes and goofy scenario. There's some simpleness yet funny comedy that I can't quite explain to it. [Directing, animation, sound direction, music 10/10]

Now about the characters. While on the surface they are pretty stereotypical, and pretty basic. One is carefree happy go lucky, and one is the gloomy serious type. However, they work VERY WELL in this anime. Perfectly crafted for the style they are going for, making for a very enjoyable time watching they interact etc. Some of the love and fan service scenes is also a nice sprinkle from time to time.

Now for other stuff. Pacing is quite well, with around 2 - 3 core scenario per episode, perfect for these type of comedy anime. Writing is also pretty good and felt natural.

Overall, I enjoy this anime quite a lot. The creativity of its comedy is pretty refreshing, the directing and production is such a pleasent candy to the eyes, and the writing and character are fun and satisfying.

Mixed Feelings

Effort. That was the first thing I noticed about this anime. You can definitely tell the studio either knew or hoped this show would attract a big audience. And honestly? So far, the quality’s been consistently solid.

The animation is impressive. It’s clear they invested a decent budget into it. While it’s not flawless and you can spot a slight dip in quality as the episodes go on,it’s nothing too distracting.

My praise doesn’t stop at the visuals. The music slaps. Sure, getting YOASOBI to do an opening or ending theme is probably the most mainstream way to “boost” an OST, but let’s be real—those two always ... deliver. And they didn’t miss here either. That song is absolute FIRE. Combine that with the stylish and unique OP animation, and you’ve got yourself a chef’s kiss.

Now, about the story and themes—Witch Watch is kind of a mixed bag, but in a good way. At its core, it’s a romcom that leans heavily into comedy. Sometimes it feels episodic, with that 4-koma structure vibe, but then it’ll hit you with plot threads that suggest it’s building toward something more serious. It’s set in a modern world, but with witches and magic. Our witch protagonist ends up befriending a good-looking guy who, surprise, turns out to be an ogre. She still attends school, even though her future’s already basically decided. Why? I dunno,efficiency or some shit.

Both the witch and the ogre end up in a class full of peculiar teenagers just like them. There’s a guy with a body like a Greek god and clothes that look like they’ve been through five boss fights. Another guy’s constantly battling a stomachache. One dude lives in the comment section wars, while another starts them. Basically, it’s a whole crew of peculiar people,so peculiar Miss Peregrine would be jealous.

Oh, and yeah—I forgot to mention: our two main characters live in the same damn house. Why? Again, probably efficiency or some bullshit like that. Not complaining though—it adds to the rom aspect of it.

You’ve probably picked up by now that this anime is heavy on the comedy. And personally, I find it pretty damn funny. But humor’s subjective, right? So I can’t guarantee everyone will vibe with it.

It leans hard into gag humor, often riding the “haha so random” train. That kind of humor isn’t for everyone. On top of that, it loves throwing in references to other anime or manga. I think that is hilarious, but if you’re new to anime, a lot of those jokes might fly over your head. So no, this probably isn’t the best starter anime. But if you’re into gag-based comedy, “my magic failed and now everything’s fucked” scenarios, or other media's references, then this show will absolutely deliver.

Overall,Witch Watch is just straight-up fun. It’s got chaos, charm, and some surprisingly good animation backing it all up. The humor won’t hit for everyone, especially if you’re not into random gags or anime references, but if that is your thing, you’ll be eating good. Not perfect, but definitely worth watching if you’re down for a good time.

Preliminary (21/25 eps)

This witch soared in her first cour. But the 2nd cour has been a crash landing.

The art work has been OK but hardly inspired. Pretty much cookie cutter from many recent animes. No originality to be found here. The animation was never much to impress, but I give them credit. It hasn't tailed off as badly as I suspected it would.

The character designs are typical high school comedy cliche. The addition of more and more characters to the household only seemed to make matters worse. Smooshing all these characters together seems highly contrived at this point. Maybe we could shoehorn a couple more ... characters into Morihito's place, and call it a occult hippie commune?

It thinned out what was already a thin premise. Everyone gets shortchanged by the writers. In particular is Temu, who seemed like she was going to be a central character. She could have been developed into someone truly interesting. But she kinda pops in and out at irregular times, and in the long run is little more than a poor running gag for the writers to fall back on.

Plot? There is no steenking plot! Which might not have been so bad, if the writers had focused on Nico and Morihito, like they did early in the first cour. But the writers stuck to a formula that becomes very tiresome after a while. Someone has a problem. Nico has a spell. Spell backfires. Supposed hilarity ensues as the cast tries to fix her fuck up. Everything comes up roses. Rinse and repeat. Sometimes as many as 3 time in a single episode.

The voice acting is not bad, but as time rolls on it becomes more 'meh.' The delivery sounds way off now, compared to the first cour.The VAs seem to have lost interest. As most of the side character performances are quite dull, there is little to recommend the directing.

Sadly this title seems to continue to disappoint. It started off well and I'd have given the first cour a solid B. But the writing and direction have slid so badly in the second cour, I've almost dropped this twice now. As it sits currently, I couldn't grade it any higher than a 68/100 for a D+. I'll finish off the season, but only to see if the producers can keep this from falling into failing territory.
