Jiisan Baasan Wakagaeru

Shouzou Saitou and his wife, Ine, have been married for nearly sixty years. Though they have not become wealthy or been able to go on a honeymoon in all that time, their love has remained steadfast. The couple spend their days peacefully tending to an orchard of apple trees and receiving visits from their loving family.

While tending to the apple tree they planted on their wedding day, which had snapped in half during a typhoon, the couple notices a golden apple hanging from one of the branches. They decide to eat the apple back at home, and the next morning, the couple awakens to find that they have become young again!

In their new but familiar bodies, Shouzou and Ine are able to live life as they never had before: they engage in more modern activities together, such as participating in a sports festival and playing video games. As they revisit the memories of their young love, the romance between them is rekindled, inspiring similar feelings in the younger members of their family.

"Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again" is an anime with a simple title and premise, yet it exudes an amazing amount of wholesomeness, warmth, and life motivation.

The story begins with an elderly couple waking up one day to find themselves young again for some inexplicable reason. Realizing they haven't truly experienced life to the fullest, they embark on a journey to embrace this newfound gift and enjoy life to the fullest. While the premise may seem straightforward, it's the progression of the story that truly sets it apart.

Rather than solely focusing on the romantic moments between the rejuvenated couple, the anime delves into how those ... around them react to their transformation. This adds depth and dimension to the narrative, making it more than just a love story.

While the animation may not be top-tier, it is colorful and serves as a suitable backdrop for the compelling storyline. The characters are well-designed, particularly the main couple who exude both charm and adorableness. Forget about MILF or DILF, here you have GILFs! The female characters are especially cute, especially when they make those ᓀ‸ᓂ expressions.

Each episode presents new surprises and heartwarming moments, ensuring that the story remains fresh and engaging throughout. Overall, "Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again" is a delightful romance story that not only showcases cute romantic moments but also celebrates the beauty of marriage, true love, the wisdom of the elderly, and the importance of cherishing time spent with family.

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (3/11 eps)

The basic plot is that an old married couple discovers a fruit from the first tree they planted, which grants them youth and allows them to live young again. What will they do now that they are young, and how will others react?

The art is standard; the main characters look okay in their youth, retaining their grey hair but being young beyond that.

The characters are more or less one-dimensional, with no signs of a need to develop them.

The episodes are similar to one-off episodes, so you can watch any episode consecutively without needing to watch it.

It was not something I found ... a strong interest in, the plot is good, but when everyone seems to fawn over them including the daughters like the grandpa for being attractive, it was a little odd.

If you are looking for a chill anime without any real need to dive deep this might be your cup of tea, for me, it did not catch my interest enough to continue.

I really do wish I could say that this anime is good, because the actual idea of an older couple becoming young sounds like it could be funny, entertaining, and even maybe provide some serious reflection of their lives. However, it provides none of those things. Even worse, there is a lack of explanation for certain things in this anime and you're just supposed to accept it. You're not supposed to think deeply, or maybe at all.

Important questions that a reasonable person might ask, like "How did you get young again?" are never asked by the couple's family or associates. It feels like ... the show doesn't want to explain anything or be bothered to give much effort.

Nobody seems that astonished at the couple getting younger. The surrounding cast responds like, "Oh, wow! That's cool. Anyways, what are we eating for supper."

The elderly man(now turned young) is lusted for by his own daughter and grand daughter. I know it's supposed to be "tongue in cheek" and not taken seriously, but it overall feels needless and cringe.

The way that the episodes are set-up it makes me feel like the anime is episodic as a comic strip, like "Daily Lives of High School Boys". However, DLoHSB is actually entertaining and even funny(with better animation).

I can't really figure out who the target audience is of this show. It's not a "terrible" anime, but it is one that is thoughtless towards anything beyond the first few minutes of the first episode. Nothing is taken that seriously. Nothing is that entertaining. Nothing is that funny. Nothing is that engaging. I wouldn't even think it qualifies as a slice-of-life anime because it doesn't feel like a real story of characters going though a progression of any kind. What a waste of a unique idea.
