There are goblins, hobgoblins, ogres, pig monsters, carbuncles, etc but the true monster is none of these things. The true monster is Studio Deen for animating yet another mindless and bad isekai.
Tomokui Kanata gets shifted off to another world after being murdered by a girl. Who is that girl? Why did she murder him? Who knows? After 4 episodes, it never explains anything. There lies a common problem; the lack of explanation. Why does he, now a goblin named Goburou, have the ability to gain skills by eating when nobody else seems to have that ability? Who knows. We can guess that it was
...
a skill given to him automatically when he was reborn, but by whom or why? Well.......I guess we are just supposed to accept it because it's a cliche by this point.
This skill does get rather silly when it shows him acquiring a new abilities by eating clothes. Yes, you heard that right.
The animation is stereotypically lack-luster, especially for any "action" that occurs. You know the type; generic, slow-moving, low-budget.
After 4 episodes, I still don't have any "attachment" to any of the characters, including the MC. That's not to say that they are "bad", but that they are "paper-thin". There's no reason to care for any of them, and the show doesn't even try to give you a reason to care.
I could forgive all of these things, and I have for a couple other isekai anime, IF it was at least entertaining. However, by the 4th episode my interest was waning due to all the faults listed above and the lack of entertainment and lack of an interesting plot. I have zero expectations of any character development. I really don't understand who the target audience is, because it's neither comedic, romance, or even an action anime. It just feels like a bunch of lazy ideas that were drawn out of a hat without an effort of "digging deep" and making something unique in any regard.
There are 8 more episodes left to be aired, but 4 episodes is enough to set the tone....and for once I'm glad to be tone-deaf.

This is an anime that isn't just bad, but it blatantly insults your intelligence and disdains you. I will explain.
The anime does have a few good ideas on paper, but it's like the skin of the body, but nothing on the inside. There isn't any bones, no muscles, and no organs. The show doesn't really dedicate itself in digging deep into any aspect. The characters are barely serviceable and what you know about these people from their introduction is largely the same by episode 12.
Yuuki, the main character, lives in a world where women have power by eating "peaches" from another realm, but
...
men can't access this power. The reason why men also can't be empowered is never explained.
Yuuki really does make Deku from Boko no Hero seem like deep character. Yuuki likes cleaning and wants to be a hero....and that's the "be all and end all" sum of his character. He eventually gets transported to Mato and is rescued from monsters by the female MC, Kyouka. They find themselves in a bad pinch and she tells him that the only way that they can be saved is if he becomes her slave(relating to her power). Somehow and without an explanation, Yuuki understands that to accept this offer he has to lick her finger.
No, you did not mis-read that. He licks her finger.
When the contract is complete, he becomes a huge white monster. It is never explained why he changes form. It also never explains why other creatures that are slaves of Kyouka don't change into another form.
Yuuki is later introduced to Kyouka's military division members. These are girls who barely have any background info and the show doesn't really explore these characters. So, we have a male with a complete surrounding cast of females......can you guess what happens? If you guessed that there is a harem trope then you would be correct. What makes it bad though is that the girls in this show want Yuuki for little to no reason. What a cliche.
Now, all of this is bad and I can mention other bad things about the show, but I will skip to the end and just tell you how this anime insults your intelligence and disdains you, the viewer. Whenever, Yuuki transforms to a creature by Kyouka's power he eventually has to be "rewarded". This is the requirement for Kyouka to use her power. It is never explained why she's the sole person that has such a stipulation to use her power. In any event, Yuuki's "reward" is always something perverted....and it feels like the show is trying to cover up it's shortcomings and laziness by adding these perverted things.
Of course there are perverted anime out there, but this show tries to represent itself as something serious.....but will try to distract you by such an easy way "out" to avoid from taking time to think about it's faults. That's insulting.

Wow, I've had to review so many bad animes lately that I'm surprised to not only come back to the positive side of things, but am able to say that this anime has far exceeded my hopes.
I will caution that the first episode is kinda slow, but that's because it's laying out the ground work. From the 2nd episode and on, I've found myself eagerly clicking on each episode.
There's been many anime that delved into the topic of racism or discrimination. However, very, very few anime are able to capture the resentment of the victims towards their "bullies" in such a believable way.
...
This is best shown by how Theoto yells at their new handler.
I will stress that this anime is focused primarily on discrimination and personal loss more than the fighting itself.
While the animation is great in the battles, it's clear that it's not a heavy focus of the anime. That's why you won't see long drawn-out fights or something along the lines of Code Geass.
The character interactions are often relatable and fun to watch in District 86. Even the characters that aren't shown as much....or even talk as much....still leave a footnote in the series. I'm also thankful that the show avoids cliche character personalities. Some of the characters you will see often, but not know a lot about them. In normal situations I would think it's because the story is lacking........but because of the way "loss" is handled and how Shin mentioned how many people have died....I think it was intended to subtly point out to the viewer how war can cause so much loss that it can feel pointless to really divulge too much into every character....because they could die the next day. If I'm correct in that, I think that is masterfully done.
This is indeed a show that is a hidden gem, despite it's high ratings.

When you watch enough school romcom anime you will be able to discern the "low effort" shows much more quickly than some other people. There are generally "flags" that get triggered. This show wastes no time presenting those flags.
1. A "weak" male figure who makes his romantic interest his whole world while blushing many times even at the very thought of her? He makes his crush his whole personality? Acts like a doormat? Acts like the stereotypical cliche?
2. The crush is the popular girl that is "out of his league"
3. The main guy's friends truly feel like background noise and look very generic....even resembling
...
each other with the bare minimum of design difference. And of course, they have to be jealous of the mc because they also are not noticed much by the female gender.
4. The show feels like an "introduction" that "hey, girls and guys can like each other more than friends" that's targeted to preteen girls.
5. The animation budget feels cheap or that the story doesn't require much budget for animation......... aka how much a character moves their bodies besides their eyes or mouths.
6. The show feels like it follows the same plot as hundreds of other shows that came before it.
Now, let me be clear.....
There are some school romcoms that may hit a few flags but excel so greatly in that stereotype that it makes it a whole new beast...even a unique beast in the same cliche, so to speak. One example is The Dangers in My Heart. THAT is one of the very few exceptions because the characters truly are unique in their own ways that's different of other main characters of other shows AND that their interactions are cute, but not cringe, and feel realistic for a first love.
This show is not an exception. It's of the same quality of "My stepmom's daughter is my ex"

I want to be clear from the start that I really wanted to like this series. The anime was hyped for years and during that wait there was certainly a lack of new action anime that was good. As the release date of the anime approached I heard people mention that it was a "typical power up" manwha that doesn't break any new ground. However, I still remained hopeful that it would be good.
After I saw the first episode, I got impatient and decided to read the manwha. I read up to chapter 59. There are THREE big problems.
1. The Lack of Excitement
A
...
big problem that I noticed very quickly is that the chapters felt very repetitive and the battle strategy usually remained the same, regardless of the obstacle. Not only was the strategy largely the same, but nothing in the abilities seemed that interesting.
It felt like I read dozens of chapters that played out the exact same way. I no longer cared if the MC gained a new level because nothing interesting came of it.
2. Motivation
The second big problem that ran concurrent with the first big problem is that in the first chapter it suggests that the MC's reasoning to become a hunter was to financially support his mother's medical situation. That's a noble cause. However, I found it very strange that not one time after the first chapter up to chapter 59 was his mother, or her condition, ever mentioned again.... not by the MC or by anyone else. In fact, once you reach the chapters in the 20's you might even forget that she is supposed to be the big reason why the MC is continuing to be a hunter, because he now has a one track mind of getting stronger.................less so of getting money...and much less so for the reason why he wants money. He does come to a point that he makes a lot of money but you never see him use it in the way that you would expect him to.
3. Lack of Character Development and Cast
After reading 59 chapters, I still barely know anything about the MC. The development of the MC to go from a weakling to being strong is handled in such a flippant way that I'm not surprised that the development from a meek/humble kid to a chad was completely instantaneous and without effort to explain it. Let's be honest here, we've seen plenty of anime/manga where a scrub gets overpowered.....but his personality towards his friends and non-enemies stays the same. It's unexplainable how the MC does a 180 flip in this regard. Frankly, it's insulting to the reader to just swallow that lazy writing.
Beyond these things, it doesn't even seem that the MC has a life outside of hunting or has any friends. I will go so far as to say that he doesn't even have a life. He has absolutely nothing going for him. This is not done for the sake of creating a "pity character who tried, but is alone". No, this was just laziness of character creation and development.
I've said it for years that a great anime/manga should focus on it's surrounding cast.....don't ignore it. This is exactly what Solo Leveling does. It ignores it. The MC's sister is largely forgotten, the girl teammate has been cast aside, the guy who wants him to finish 19 dungeons is barely shown, etc.
I spoke on the MC's mother and sister....but you might wonder where his father is. Is the father dead? Left the family? Working all the time? Who knows....because in 59 chapters it doesn't once reference him. You think there would be a mention of the father in some regard if the MC is supposed to be helping out with the household bills and his mother's medical care.
_________________________________-
In Summary
I can see what this manwha is striving to be, but unfortunately the people that told me to expect it to be "meh" before I started reading were correct. I do believe this series gets a lot of good reviews not because of substance, but because there is an influence of hype. When even "Arifureta" does this niche better? You've got a serious problem on your hands. The manga does make a minor improvement in the chapters in the 50's and maybe things will improve.....However, I've given it plenty of time to pull me in and it's lost the opportunity to do so now.

I think the overall idea for a "Modern day meets Medieval" anime sounds really good. This show had a lot of potential, but unfortunately it's very underutilized more often than not. The first couple episodes does a great job of getting your attention and showcasing how vulnerable people in medieval times would be when faced with a tank or a jet. However, the show seems to lose direction on what it really wants to "be" from the 3rd episode and afterwards. Sometimes there are glimpses that remind you how much of a threat the SDF could pose to the new world, but for the most
...
part it feels like Itami and his cohorts are sent on "busy-work" that is neither interesting nor deep. Amongst that busy work is a thinly veiled "harem" theme.......which I wouldn't mind so much if it was fun......but it isn't.
As for as Itami is concerned, the be-all and end-all of his character is that he is an otaku. He was in the special forces and even divorced, but those things aren't explored. Those are things that are lazily given to add some background info on him. You don't see any of his past, regarding the military or with his ex-wife. He does not have any kind of character development/growth and what you get at the 11th episode is the exact same thing you get from the 1st episode - a barely workable MC who pushes the "story" forward.
The other characters are mostly enamored with Itami for little to no reason. Like Itami, their characters' backstories/character development is equally barren. In fact, by the end of the season, you may have a hard time recalling the names of Itami's fellow soldiers or traveling buddies.
There are many things done in the show that should be explained. What is the Gate? How did it get here? Are there more of them? Is Japan studying the Gate on the other side? You don't get any answers to those questions. In fact, none of the characters even ask the questions or brings the subjects into focus. This lack of detail and explanation even works on the smaller scale. For example, what benefit is the SDF getting for giving away hundreds of thousands of yen worth of merchandise so it could be sold in the medieval towns?
The cliffhanger at the end of season 1 feels badly placed, especially because it's not exactly a very exciting cliffhanger that would make you excited to see season 2.

I wanted to like this anime. I really did. After watching so many new anime the last couple years that felt generic with cheap animation and boring characters.....I hoped that this anime would be a breath of fresh air. Weeeell........it misses the mark more than it connects.
The animation quality is respectable. You can see a smoothness in how the characters move around in social environments or in fights. The art design for the characters are a mixed bag. Some characters have a generic look, but some look like the creator really tried to draw a unique person.
For me, there are three critical negatives
...
that caused me to drop it after 6 episodes.
1. "Wait....who is this now/again?" That's what you might think several times within 6 episodes. Besides the main characters, side characters get introduced and then taken off screen barely long enough for them to be introduced. These characters are shuffled around like musical chairs and it definitely feels odd. I think the ultimate problem is that the cast is too big too early and nobody is getting the screen time needed for you to really digest their presence in this show.
2. The main characters are all together as one big friend group, despite being strangers 2 seconds earlier, for literally no good reason at all. I had to question why they were choosing to be together many times through 6 episodes, even before knowing each others' names. It just feels VERY forced, lazy, and unrealistic(yes, I know it's an anime, but still.........)
3. This is tying in with #1 and #2 regarding the big cast of characters. Nobody has any depth or character beyond the surface. I know that it's only 6 episodes so far....BUT somebody, anybody of the main cast should have a back story going on or a substantial clear motive that is reflective in how the show will end.
Oliver Horn? a talented fighter.........that's about it as far as we really know.
Hibiya? A very talented samurai whose hair changes white with a explanation from Oliver that will induce an eye rolling response.
Michela? A girl that is fairly decent in being aware of situations around them. Has some unexplored past with a side-character.
Katie? An girl that loves different beings in the world and has a crush on Oliver
Guy? A SLIGHTLY thick headed guy.........nothing else.
Pete? A tsundere who doesn't have a lot of magical background in his family.
That's it. And somehow these main characters are connected at the hip with each from the word "go" . The side characters are even less explained or cared for.
This anime has the pieces to potentially be good, even very good.............but the pieces are badly managed and halfway through this season(if it's 12 episodes) there is no improvement to be seen.

A school that that has a foundation of quirky contests/games? This sounds great as a description. After all, I REALLY enjoy Classroom of the Elite (a serious anime). I also REALLY enjoyed Baka and Test (a really funny anime). How could it go wrong whether this new anime was to be serious or a comedy, right?
Wrong. It is neither serious nor a comedy..... nor is it really anything at all..............At least not anything done well.
I know that there has only been 3 episodes thus far, but that's more than enough time to sink the hook into the viewer. However, I'm a fish not fooled by
...
the cheap and shoddy bait.
There are technically three main characters, Hiroto(male), Sarasa(female), and Shirayuki(female). I suppose it should set off alarm bells that none of them "grab" my interest in three episodes. They aren't cliches and they aren't "wooden boards" with zero personality, but at the same time......there's just something not that appealing about them.
The worst aspect is that the games in this anime are just not interesting and also have a lack of "pull" for me. I don't personally find a game of two characters running around town trying to collect digital cards that they can scan with their phone worth the time to think about, much less the time requiring a studio to animate it. Wait, no.....I take that back. The worst aspect is having a MC that you barely have been introduced to being forced into a game like that.
Since I do really enjoy the concept of schools that have contests/games it's saddening that I can't give this anime more than a 5.

At the 3rd episode I rated the show as a 7 with mixed feelings. As of episode 5, I have to lower it to a 5 and not recommend. Modified review below
I thought the description of this anime was right up my alley and I thought it would be a nice change of pace, even something unique. Why unique? Whenever an anime character(A) likes another anime character(B), they do not give up their crush until they "lose" to a rival in love(C) or unless some huge life changing/world changing reason.....until now. I like the idea of a character that is willing to think, "I've had
...
enough rejection". It will likely only be a temporary mindset, but it's refreshing nonetheless as long as it lasts.
The MC, the romantic interest, and the romantic interest's best friend are all likeable and personable characters that don't fall heavy into the cliche department.
For the negatives? The character aesthetic/model designs are very generic. There was one moment in episode 3 at the water fountain that I had a hard time discerning which character was the MC and which was the MC's friend. The only real difference was a slightly different shade of brown hair. The animation was "serviceable" at first, but let's call it what it was; it was meh. Somehow the animation quality has dropped even worse as the show progressed. I kid you not, that at the very beginning of episode 5 there are two girls hovering their arms over a school desk for no apparent reason, nor for anything relating to their personality. You would think it's a freeze panel or the the episode got paused.....or something......but then you would come to the realization that the studio didn't want to waste the time making the characters move if they didn't have to.
While I ALWAYS appreciate attention given to the side-characters, besides the romantic interest and Kei Ashida(best friend of the romantic interest), none of the other characters seem impressionable..............and almost all of them are nameless. In fact, as of episode 5, I still don't know who these random classmates are that are interacting with the main 3 characters. Who are these people? You know what? Forget I asked. I don't care and the anime has given me no reason to care.
The MC's sister, despite having ample screen time in the first three episodes, still feels lacking.
In episode 5 the show went heavy into the cliches. Truck-kun makes an appearance. The "I have a common cold that causes me to pass out" is present. The tsundere thank you response from the romantic interest. It's just.....really bad, especially mixed with boring and empty dialogue and terrible animation. I really don't think I can continue watching this anime. It's not even a "good time-killer anime". It's just bad and I feel bad watching it.

I geniunely appreciate the soft/comfortable approach in both visuals and plot of this anime. Akane is a very likeable MC. I suppose I found the symbolism of her holding on to her previous relationship and her broken locket to be well done and accurate to people in real life. After all, lots of people have a hard time letting go of previous relationships.
Here's the underlining problem.......besides Akane and Runa, the other characters feel kind of hollow. This includes the character that the show is named after, Yamada. I'm at episode 14 and there's really nothing known about the character besides him being a gamer
...
and a brief glimpse of his interaction with a girl from his childhood. I like mysterious characters, but I find mysterious characters with a monotone personality and lack of involvement with other people to be very hard to enjoy watching.
Which brings me to the question - Why is Akane, in episode 13, in love with him? She doesn't even know him that well. For Yamada's part, Akane is a likeable character, but it's not like she does anything in particular that's different from other people in order to make him take notice of her as being special. It just feels very forced and unrealistic. It would be like proclaiming your love to a gas station employee that you've made small chit-chat with three or four times.
There's not much of a climax to this anime and it's really trying hard to make one by including Yamada's classmate(the black haired girl) who was introduced very late in the game of love. We all know that she isn't a serious contender. She barely has any screen time and feels just as hollow as most of the other characters.
It's a very calming anime to watch and despite nothing major happening at any point(besides Runa accepting Akane)....it doesn't make me fee like it's a chore to watch it. I would love to give it an 8. I really would. However, the lack of substance behind any of the characters and their relationships makes giving it higher than a 7 to be overly generous.
