2.5-jigen no Ririsa

After a disastrous romantic confession, Masamune Okumura finds solace in the fictional world of anime and manga. Now a second-year high school student and the president of the Manga Research Club, Masamune spends a peaceful existence watching the adventures of the angel Liliel, his favorite character.

In the beginning of the academic year, Masamune’s life is turned upside down when he meets first-year student Ririsa Amano, a passionate cosplay practitioner. Despite Masamune's initial reluctance, the determined young woman manages to convince him to become her personal photographer for the production of a collection dedicated to their common favorite character: Liliel.

As Masamune enthusiastically discovers the world of cosplay and photo editing, he is unexpectedly reunited with his childhood friend Mikari Tachibana, who has become a model in the hope of impressing her beloved upperclassman. Realizing that modeling is not enough to intrigue the hopeless otaku, Mikari decides to join the club and become a cosplayer herself, all to finally have a chance at winning Masamune's heart. However, Masamune's love for fictional characters may not be capable of extending to those who impersonate them.

2.5 Dimensional Seduction is a story of 2 degen otaku, they don't know what the hell they are doing, but they love the same (fictional) Jump character. One loves only a 2D woman, and the other wants to cosplay as that 2D woman.

Maybe loving Lilliel a little too much, I mean seriously, what an odd situation to end up stripping in front of people just cause of shared otakuism.

But it is that connection which snowballs into a great interpersonal journey, not just for themselves, but also for the people they meet, because certainly there is some joy newcomers bring ... to a field some may be jaded by from their own experience.

Did I mention this is a shonen? Yeah this is a weird rom com cosplay battle shonen.

This is not a story about "will he, will she".
This is a story about how Ririsa handles her time trying to share her formerly lonely love of her favorite character with others. And how Okumura can come out of his shell to aid his new friend in sharing that same love. Maybe they'll fall in love, but for the time being, they're both a bit too stupid for that. After all, the world of cosplay is just so expansive!!! Making photos is fun!

But also this series is surprisingly adult. Some real nuggets of wisdom for introspection from some of the adult characters. Hey, an otaku fantasy, people supportive of their hobbies haha. But seriously, after the first "major battle", what 2.5D Seduction had to say about the aftermath made me know this was something special.

The manga is an interesting thing because there's bonus chapters added in the physical release that are great character moments/interactions you won't find in the web version. And so it comes into question how much the anime actually would cover, and well, select bonus chapters were adapted so this is a pretty nice feeling of seeing some of the more fun interactions in animation for certain characters.

The show is so pretty. The show can't obviously measure up to the great faces Yu Hashimoto draws in the dramatic moments, but everything else is so good, and the anime original expressions are pretty great too. The production value is amazing. This show premiered late eps in its early screenings.
And original additions like original animation for the series Okumura and Ririsa love, Ashford Chronicle, just raises the enjoyment level so hard. They cooked at JC Staff.

The voice acting is so good, and of course, the big standout is Junya Enoki, who plays Okumura. The man can yell. Everyone is so good of course, like MAO as Mayura. The cast has grown a pretty good amount since then and well, it's all so good.

The OPs and EDs are STELLAR. 1st OP and 2nd ED focused on photos, and 2nd OP and 1st ed focused on fun character interactions. They cooked, they are feast for manga reader eyes and ears.

2.5 Dimensional Seduction is a great adaptation of one of the best ongoing manga out there. Which is why it's a real shame there's like most negative reviews talking about JC Staff "censors", people talking up the "whole point of the manga" when it's clear they haven't read much of anything. Not every series is Dress Up Darling just cause of a shared cosplay premise or even because there's some ecchi in it.

And that's like on top of details we've gotten from the mangaka himself on Twitter about details of this series creation. The 2-3 volume schlock project that turned into something else by a challenge from his editor to leave the clubroom. As the series itself is toned down anyways afterwards. It's all very fascinating stuff released each week, the mangaka musing about back when those moments were made.

The anime adaptation of 2.5 Dimensional Seduction comes off, as a product of love, but also how Yu Hashimoto would do it if he could do it again with the series as it is now. We are heading to the whole reason this show is 24 eps right now and well episode 16 is the encapsulation of everything one comes for this series for, pure otaku love.

Cause 2.5 Dimensional Seduction is about love, and to love things with full force.

I can't call 2.5 Dimensional Seduction bad, but it definitely falls short of what I expected given its potential.

The biggest issue? Censorship. Specifically, of the, ahem, scantily clad scenes, which are pretty much the entire point of the manga.

Now, if you're adapting an ecchi series, shouldn't it be faithful to the source material? The main problem here is the PG-13 rating, which limits the very thing the manga was built on—cough borderline soft-core porn cough. Sure, some PG-13 anime push boundaries with ecchi content, but this one censors most of what made the manga popular: provocative cosplay that's, let’s be honest, one slip away from ... naked. If the anime waters down all the fan service the manga relied on, what's the point?

If your source material is ecchi and borders on soft-core porn, targeting a very specific audience who’s there for that, then it makes no sense to give the anime a PG-13 rating that limits it away from what the anime is. You’re setting yourself up for failure when the very thing fans want to see is censored. Why would fans who know what this is about bother watching a version that censors what they came for?

And, do you expect the characters in an ecchi series like this to have deep, intriguing personalities? Not really. That’s not what the manga focused on—it was all about nudity and erotic scenes involving the characters. I read a decent few chapters, and I can safely say the manga is about 70% "fun" material (😉) and 30% story. That’s what it was designed for.

However, the anime flips that, giving us 70% story and only 30% suggestive clothing. But when the original story was pretty much just a setup for more dirty and scantily clad scenes, you end up with a show that feels weirdly out of place in a PG-13 format. It just doesn’t work as well when the anime has to focus on story rather than the ahem "visual appeal" that fans were actually there for. So, what we get is an awkward, toned-down version of a series that’s supposed to be all about pushing those boundaries.

In the end, it’s not that 2.5 Dimensional Seduction is bad. It just feels like it’s missed the mark by trying to straddle the line between ecchi and PG-13 without doing either particularly well. When a manga built on soft-core nudity and erotic cosplay gets watered down for a broader rating, it leaves me wondering: why bother adapting it at all if you’re going to censor the thing everyone came for?

This really should've been a R-17+ or a R+ considering what it came from. And while I don't necessarily dislike the anime, it just isn't the same as the manga.

6/10, I gotta look at more of this manga for... research purposes...

It's rare for me to do something like this, but i feel like i want express my opinion on this anime. When i first discovered this manga i find nothing special along with the anime ( from watching the first 2 episodes ). However putting more time into reading the manga, i've discovered one of the best written, character development, and well drawn scene/character expressions ever. My manga list is small compared to the many animes i've watched, but i usually don't add mangas I've dropped. When i first learned JC Staff is animating this, 2 things came in mind, they could go the ... railgun route and gave a shit and try adapting and animating it or go the index 3, dal 3, and many recent adaption route, rushed to shit or power point ur way through. 2.5 Seduction falls under the power point presentation route, the anime itself is just basically power point slides. The expressions compare to manga, doesn't fit nor capture the amazing dialogue thats being told and it completely ruins the many amazing scenes from the manga. The current arc we had, the one that showcased Nagomi, was completely butchered. In the manga it 100% captured the emotional thoughts and past exp that she went through and how both parties were effected by the current situation, meanwhile in the anime we just get a power point presentation with the dialogue. The only thing great about this adaptation was the dialogue and JC ruined by making the expressions, camera angel, and animating the scenes complete shit. I truly believe this series deserves more notice and eyes on it, but with the way the anime is going, it'll 100% fail to capture the beauty of the summer comikt arc and main male character 1st major character development right after the arc. The ppl that read this and is planning to drop or want to watch this show, pls go show the manga love. This is a very slow paced series the first 20 maybe even 30 chapters will probably won't capture u, or u may feel like its aight, but give it time. I was invested within 40 chapters, and when i finished reading the summer comekit arc as well as the main male characters first major character development arc, its been nothing but banger after banger.
This Series i truly believe is one of the best series, and i do put it above Dress up darling in terms of the cosplay genre.
