Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story Season 2

Arriving in Japan, underground golfer Eve wants nothing more than to play a match against Aoi Amawashi, the "Innocent Tyrant" prodigy that caught her eye. However, the girls, wishing to finally settle the score on who is the better golfer, will have to wait until the conclusion of the All-Japan Girls' High School Gold Doubles Championship. Now competing together for the Raiou Girls' Academy's golf team, Eve and Aoi decide to work together to claim a win for their institution.

For a chance at defeating their more challenging opponents, both girls must find a way to further develop their golfing styles. However, dangerous figureheads pull strings in the background, making this high school golf tournament much more serious than it appears. In addition, Eve's illusive past resurfaces, making matters between her and Aoi even more complicated than they already were.

Birdie Wing constantly creates the opposite effect of what theoretically should be a more dramatic story of two women who were trained within an inch of their lives to be good at one sport, are torn apart by circumstances, and their love and appreciation for each other is only rivaled by the need to destroy each other at golf. The series is a blast. I hesitate to use the term "life-affirming," but it sure as hell is more uplifting and entertaining than most things. And the more shady, morality-free villains who join the cast to either propose that beloved protagonist Evangeline become their slave or ... be straight-up murdered along with everyone around her, the more fun it is. I don't know how it works, but it does.

It's one of those inexplicable anime creations that if you describe it to people, "underground golf mafia" comes off like word salad. But it's absolute bliss if you take the time to watch it.

Mixed Feelings

After the golf-tastic first season that went all out, this season feels unfortunately quite lackluster. They removed the over the top, good parts that drew us in and replaced them with a generic sports anime.

Animation was okay, but I felt that many golf scenes were copy pasted animations.
Story wise I think the part with Aoi's mother lying to her was never resolved?

Eve's and Aoi's personalities also took a hit. Different to S1.
The backstories were nice, but nothing more. Them being somewhat related resulted in absolutely nothing? I think it'd have been better if season 2 did not exist.

Birdie Wing Season 2 is an absolute mess and it pains me to say that.

After finishing Birdie Wing Season 1 you get the distinct feeling that you watched the first half of a season rather than a full season on its own. Which is awkward but survivable, if the second season just finishes that promised arc. But unfortunately it is abundantly clear what happened here; halfway through production they were told they were only getting twenty-four episodes and were going to be cancelled afterward.

Maybe that's a bold statement to make but its the only thing that makes sense with how erratic the pacing is for ... Season 2. It feels like we cover two or three, maybe even FOUR, seasons worth of story across twelve episodes. Plotlines are powerblasted at you like a fire hose, threads that could take a whole season to play out are forced into one or two episodes. Massive timeskips jump over important sections of the story.

And most disappointingly all these choices absolutely gut the time we get to see Eve and Aoi actually together, which was the most appealing part of Birdie Wing. Most of the other cast also gets shoved off screen as quickly as they arrive and don't get to shine either.

It's truly a shame, had all these plots had the time to be fully fleshed out and not had the rest gutted it could have been a really fantastic anime. But we can only review what we have, not the fantasies of Birdie Wing getting the three to five seasons it needed.
