Trigun Stampede

On the planet Noman's Land, reporters Meryl Stryfe and Roberto De Niro traverse the desert in search of the infamous outlaw Vash the Stampede. But the man they find near the desolate town of Jeneora Rock is a far cry from the lethal terrorist they expect. In reality, Vash is a passive and carefree drifter; he is a proponent of peace, beloved by the residents of the town. His inaccurate reputation actually stems from the widespread atrocities committed by his twin brother Knives Millions. Still, Vash is dubbed "The Humanoid Typhoon'' due to the tendency for violent chaos to follow in his wake.

Chaos soon arrives in the form of bounty hunters seeking the high price on Vash's head, and their violent pursuit poses great danger to the town and its precious power plant. Thanks to his gunslinging prowess, Vash is able to resist most of these nefarious forces. Yet he must soon face off against the ultimate evil: the unstoppable destructive power of his malevolent brother.

The concepts of “pacifist”, and “$$6,000,000 bounty on his head” made the synopsis one of this series' greatest strengths.

I find it difficult, to talk about “Trigun Stampede” without spoiling anything. It's a series that contains the importance of its message behind the very synopsis, and it isn't at all what the series is about, but it's the climax itself. Everything comes back to the synopsis, the situation the main character puts himself in, the constant sadness, and the tragedy that follows him. Everything comes back to the fact that he is the embodiment of something greater.

Even if the beginning sets up our main ... conflict, the story doesn't touch upon it that fast. It leaves us in the dark for a while, to deliver the actual story a little later on. We begin with small adventures. Our main character meets the main cast, everybody tries to deal with some smaller, and bigger goons, and it all seems pretty simple. It's slightly episodic in nature, and it definitely bored me towards the midpoint. However, I knew I should stick to it a little longer. This is a story about learning the past, learning what truly happened to get where we are, and how that shapes the character's future.

There's a revelation about our character, something that changes everything, and the narrative becomes this philosophical debate between environmentalism, society's slow suicide, the fatalism of human nature, and if one good person does represent a horrible world. I started feeling this attachment towards Vash, a feeling that slowly crept through my back, and made me stare at a pinnacle of ideals, and how they can slowly break a person.

Are we our ideals? How long can we go? We can preach all we want about changing the world, about maintaining as many present lives as we can, but what does that do for the future? Should we defend the now? Even when everybody hates you? Would I manage to take the blame, and suffer for the sake of those who want me dead? It's so poignant, and so beautiful to see a person who just can't let go of the good in people. All against the one who sees only the hatred humanity produces. Perfect foil, and a great narrative to follow it.

The animation's got the “Studio: Orange” signature. Beautifully rendered, and expressive animation that bursts with emotion, and character, with amazing fight scenes that you can't look away from. If there are arguments to accommodate for CG animation, this is one of them without a shadow of a doubt. The shot composition had this greater than life feel to it, where the desert, or the scenery, buries the characters in a never-ending space of sand. The mouth, the faces, eyes, and the kind-of bubbly movement adds much more personality to each frame. There's some 2-D around there, but it never fights with the CG, only done in simple moments.

I wish I could give it a better rating. If it weren't for the boring episodes that lead to the reveal we had with our character. The first episode, and the reveal onwards, were probably the only points where I wanted to keep watching. Excellent quality, that can easily be left away due to a bad follow-up to the great intro. The other gripe would be the problem with some characters. My lack of attachment to them, even with their slow development, that's most likely left for future seasons. I needed a little more from them, but with our main guy, Vash, and the main villain, as well as his emotional connections, amazing.

A great soundtrack, with these massive piano motif. Lovely animation and presentation, cinematography, voice acting, story, and lessons. Wouldn't know if to call it one of the greatest Christ allegories, since maybe I'm missing the point. It just felt so beautiful if seen from those lenses. This is a series that deserves love, and I'll be watching more for sure.

7.5/10. Right behind that wall of greatness, but currently unable to break beyond it.

Mixed Feelings

what made the later half of the original trigun so shocking and really made you feel for vash was how before every episode had such a happy and optimistic ending. you really do become deluded with the same idea that vash has that no one has to die and when that's ripped away it hits both you and vash like a train. the good guys in stampede almost never win. it becomes expected that something bad is gonna happen and when it does, i feel nothing.

a huge part of the original that's mostly absent here is the legend that follows vash the stampede which is ... pretty much absent here. the entire first few episodes of trigun are building up the mythos surrounding vash. how he's the greatest gunman on Gunsmoke who trouble follows wherever he goes. there is none of that here. vash is just a cool twink guy who just so happens to have a bounty on his head because he looks a lot like the real culprit. vash in stampede never has a single *moment* like vash in trigun has that makes him rise above all the other cool guys in anime. he never scares a group of bandits away with a kid's toy gun, he never takes all the bullets of every gun in a saloon, he never chants "love and PEACE!!🤞" what he does do is beat up guys real good. he beats up a group of bandits and he kicks a fist out of the air and i can't say im impressed because i can get this out of literally any anime protagonist.

wolfwood is just an asshole here too. kinda lame. and meryl isn't a cool action girl anymore. she's basically just "dumb girl." kinda lame.

basically the only above average thing about stampede is the gorgeous animation that maaybbeee makes it worth watching but eh.

Take Trigun, but remove the "juice", the "rizz", the "it factor", and then you get Trigun Stampede.

The original Trigun is something I remember in a hazy fugue state of late nights in a buddies basement in my late teens. Maybe we all had just played too much Halo,everything smelled like stale weed and sweat, and we just wanted to kick back with a DVD copy of a grungy looking anime from the 90's that had sick guitar riffs.

Basically I remember generally liking Trigun, but not being particularly attached to it.

So when the remake was announced, I said to myself "neat, I could revisit ... Trigun". My gf agreed, because she also sorta remembered Trigun from when she was a teenager.

And so we sat down to watch the first episode, watched the whole thing in Japanese, and as soon as the credits rolled, went online to see if Johnny Young Bosch and the rest of the English cast was coming back for a dub. As soon as that was partially confirmed we decided to wait for the dub to satiate our nostalgia driven Lizard brains.

-8 months later-

I'm hungover, it's Saturday morning, I don't want to move. So watch all twelve episodes of Trigun Stampede and am left with the question of who was this for? People who like the original will be put off by the anime soft boy redesign of Vash and the new CGI aesthetic (or they've moved on in the last twenty years). And people younger then thirty think of the original as "boomer" anime,and don't have any built in interest in the thing being rebooted.
So where is the market for this new version?

Story: Stampede is the cliff notes version of Trigun's story, and doesn't really allow for much in the way of world building, it just hurries along to million knives without much of a thought as to why we should care.

Characters: Vash became a standard sad anime boy protagonist, which is too bad, because his dichotomy with million knives becomes really dull when they're both just a collection of standard anime tropes.
Nic and Meryl are mostly the same, but don't have much time in the story to allow them to be interesting.
I despise Roberto De Niro. He is the worst part of the show. He is such a bland replacement for Millie, the washed up jaded reporter character is so played out that I could guess most of his lines before he said them.

Tone/Atmosphere/World building/etc: I like Dune, I like Dune a lot.Not everything needs to be Dune. I get that space westerns got played out after Trigun went off the air, but changing it to Dune just hollows out the charm of the original and just leaves it as another chosen one heroic journey. It's just so bland.

The CGI:......... Honestly looked pretty good, I generally still prefer the look of the original, but that's mostly nostalgia probably. The CGI gets a little dicey during the final fight, but other than that, it looks fine to good most of the time.

So to wrap this all up, if you want to experience Trigun, probably just watch the original. Yeah its a bit longer, but it a least has an identity of its own and its a solid 7/10.
