Deception can be scary. Is the world you live in really what you perceive? Do you believe in what you see or see what you believe? What is the truth and what is the lie? Is anyone benefiting from the lies and who is struggling from the truth? If everyone believes in a lie, does the lie become the truth? What happens if what you think is wrong has been the right one all along? Will you switch sides, or will you stay?

Billy's first RPG or DnD campaign. highschool, Japan but with 1 type of monster and some humans that fight them....

None of these will always make for a bad show, they aren't even necessarily a bad setting.

But even the best of them, may not be as interesting due to the sheer number of times we have seen similar settings play out.

So come with me, and I'll show you some shows or movies that have a one of a kind setting that chances are you have never seen before.

Note: shows like ID:invaded are here because the characters go to many unique settings despite the main main setting not being that special, in this case, the unique stuff are the ID.

Also, Subscribe to APolygons2 on YouTube or I will shoot your waifu!

In the dawn of the digital age, many creators have expressed their hopes and fears about technology and its influence on human society through science fiction anime, creating many interesting interepretations of what our future could be (or even what our present is) with regards to the ever accelerating integration of technology into our lives.

Some of these anime may explore technological revolution in a military or political context, some others in intimate personal dramas. Some are hard, realistic, grounded sci-fi with a lo of genuine scientific backing and others are bordering in fantasy. Some of these are true cyberpunk, and others are entirely opposed to it. Some of these works are pessimistic and fearful about tecnhology, whereas others present hopeful and idealistic possibilities, and some others simply present a grey future with as many advantages as disadvantages. But the main connecting aspect here is the exploration of sci-fi as a fundamental theme and the exploration of te philosophical, sociopolitical and/or psychological consequences of technology whether directly or indirectly, seriously or lightheartedly.

Common tropes & themes: artificial intelligence & meaning of being human, technological implants/bodily enhancements, virtual/augmented reality, social media & deep internet, space travel & space war, extreme capitalism and urbanism in the digital age, personal relationships between humans and androids, discrimination and opression between humans and androids, psychological/physical deterioration due to use of experimental technology

Notes:
- For Blame! read the manga instead
- For The Animatrix, watch The Matrix movies first
- For Blade Runner: Black Out 2022, watch the Blade Runner movies first

These anime show at least one of the three sentiments expressed in the title. Some are very obvious, some are not. In the case of the anti-fascist ones, they don't always have literal fascists for villains, but their characters will show behaviours opposed to those of fascism.

When I say visually insane, I'm not talking about anime with high quality animation, I'm talking about the ones that have chaotic, psychodelic, stylized, experimental and overall unusual styles.
If a show has multiple seasons I'll just add the first one.

Whatever story might be being told, however familiar or unusual the story itself may be, they tend to have a setting that's easy to understand. Contemporary or historical non-fictional, futuristic sci-fi or cyberpunk, fantasy settings with swords and sorcery, etc. While there can be changes these settings to make them unique, they still remain familiar.

Sometimes, however, we're thrown into a setting where things may look superficially familiar to some degree but are elsewise alien, unusual or anomalous. Worlds where the rules aren't entirely clear at first. "Bizarre" is a hard metric to measure, but if you like worlds that get weird, then this list will probably have something for you.

While most of the sterotypically elitist anime released between 1989 and 2006, there are still modern anime that are considered as "elitist".
