Synopsis

Suletta Mercury leaves her planet and enters the Asticassia School of Technology at the behest of her mother. There, right and wrong are determined through duels between students, and the top-ranking duelist will receive Miorine Rembran as their fiancée—this prize being decided by Miorine's father.

When Guel Jeturk, the best pilot in school and Miorine's current fiancé, demands that his betrothed move in with him, Suletta disapproves, so Guel challenges her. Although she emerges as champion, Suletta is subsequently detained on suspicion of piloting a forbidden type of mobile suit—a GUND-ARM, or "Gundam"—which results in her victory being voided.

Miorine refuses to accept any more injustices and proposes another duel with even higher stakes. Now, Suletta must triumph a second time, otherwise she will be expelled and the Gundam Aerial that means so much to her will be destroyed.

Background

A short novel set before the events of Kidou Senshi Gundam: Suisei no Majo titled Yuri Kago no Hoshi was written by Ichirou Ookouchi and published on the anime's official Japanese website. The novel was used in the production of the opening theme.

The Kidou Senshi Gundam: Suisei no Majo - Asticassia School of Technology Radio Committee program hosted by the series' voice actors has streamed on the Onsen internet radio station since October 9, 2022.

Reviewing as someone who has never watched mecha animes before, let alone the Gundam universe:
[Unique, complex, yet fathomable storyline and world-building, characters with all unique personalities and backgrounds which are dived into, and main characters full of 'girlbosses' - inspirational yet humane. All comes together with top notch production and quality as an anime in general (again, not comparing with other mecha animes because I have not watched any other) with fantastic music, sfx, and vfx. 9/10]

As a fantasy genre enjoyer, all I can say is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury's world is totally unique and original, yet so complex which is why ... from its world-building alone, it deserves to be watched by whoever you are. Such well written lore not only for the world and settings itself, but also for each and every single character. There's no character that is an extra, in some ways, because even 'extras' are so well-portrayed that each of their single lines are so vital in whatever scene there is.

The fact that they also dive into the background, the motivation, the mindset - the soul of all the main/lead characters is also such a fine work. Although, this is also where Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury's imperfections lies. Maybe it's because the complexity of the world itself, that a lot of the character's backgrounds which are dived into and their personalities which are definitive and solid - seems unfinished, or have quite some loose ends. Nevertheless, unless you are SO into one of the characters that fall victim into this imperfection, you should be able to still enjoy all there is to their stories, their souls, as they're so well-written nevertheless.

Its plot itself is quite light yet casually brutal, and this is what makes Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury stand out from others. This kind of condition makes the anime all the more realistic, because that is life - it may be quiet but the next second can be a storm. But of course, that is to say if you accept such extreme twists in the direction of an anime, which might be a minus if you don't. However, all the twist and turns of the story is essential and is well-written, so do open your heart for them and enjoy the rollercoaster. It still contributes to me taking a point from my score for the anime, though, because I believe a nice mixture of lightness and seriousness/brutality is very much possible to be achieved in a more balanced way, maybe even in each of the episodes (which I've seen possible in k-dramas which often is romance-comedy yet also action/thriller at the same time) which the dynamic of the plot in this anime... is quite far from that. But like I said, open your heart and enjoy.

The production and quality is what I'd expect from such a big franchise, which is very high in quality and detail. I mean, it's all the craze in the model kit building community with all the unique mechanics and stuff, or so I've heard. Therefore, there's nothing to comment on, other than emphasizing how well-made it is. All the visuals, the sound effects, the music - perfection.

In conclusion, definitely a must-watch for fantasy anime enjoyers (even if you've never watched [or enjoyed] mecha animes before!). Unique and inspiring, a wonderful commercial creation.

Mixed Feelings

The Witch from Mercury certainly isn't the best anime I've ever seen, but it does a good job at setting up it's second season, and it's beautiful Gundam animations are something to behold. It may end in a way some may find underwhelming, but it assures a second season, which I think heavily entices you to continue watching. I know I'm going to! I think the sacrifices this season makes for setting up season 2 makes this one struggle to reach peak Gundam. It's no Iron-Blooded Orphans, but it's got similar charm.

The animation doesn't really shine until the fights happen. I also don't love that ...

I find that there are three aspects of a given anime that best indicate its quality: animation, characters, and story. The animation is excellent, however G-Witch’s execution of the other two categories fails miserably.

Please note that I am a fan of the wider Mobile Suit Gundam franchise.

Let's look at the macro issues in G-Witch's story (plot and world building) first

The story details the life of Suletta Mercury, a young girl who transfers into a space school that prepares its students for mobile suit (which are pilotable robots) related jobs.

Already, there are flaws with this premise. The show pays little attention to school elements despite ... taking place almost entirely in a school. Of course the plot does not need to revolve around school activities, but excluding it entirely is quite vexing. The vast majority of a student’s time is taken up by school (especially in engineering programs) so the show should at the very least dedicate dialogue to school related issues or triumphs even if just in passing.

The school itself is beyond unrealistic. It gives the title of Holder to any student who can beat the current Holder in combat with real Mobile Suits. Fights between students in Mobile Suits are called duels. Need I explain to you the cataclysmic safety and budgetary issues that having students fight in military equipment would bring. The show implies that this system is important so that the families that sponsor the school can flex their mobile suits, however, this is insufficient justification for such large safety and budgetary issues.

Suletta’s duels in the school form three different mini arcs which each span three episodes. Each arc develops an antagonist who then loses to Suletta in the last episode. The fourth mini arc does not follow this formula. Still, the formula is repetitive and quite lazy. To clarify, having formulas is not an inherently bad thing, but this formula is. In each arc, antagonists that are not the arc’s focus seem to drop out of the story entirely. Viewers cannot get attached to characters that are thrown away for stretches of the show without reason. If the story does even care about the character, why should the viewers?

The last of my gripes is about the last arc in G-Witch. Quite frankly, it comes out of nowhere. Firstly, the show’s plot did not build up to such an explosive arc. G-Witch went from kids fighting over petty issues to full blown war. The last arc did not happen “organically”. None of the central characters were even driving forces in the arc starting. If the last arc were completely changed no viewer would suspect a thing. That’s how little it fits into the story’s direction.

Then there's the characters. I will keep this brief because there is a great deal of subjectivity involved in judging characters. And honestly, I don't have a problem with side characters. I've gotten used to spoiled rich kids in anime with daddy problems. It's not interesting but it's not the worst. The main issue I have is with the main character. She is a contradictory mess. She has an immense amount of confidence when interjecting in other people’s problems, and can fight in a giant robot with no issues, yet she is uncomfortable when talking to friends. I know she does not have experience talking with people her own age but that should not matter. Being embarrassed and shy is a self-confidence issue but she is shown to have a ridiculous amount of confidence. I cannot buy into this character.

If you want a slice of life go watch a different show. If you want masterful characters go watch a different show. Good world building? Lol do not watch this. Good mech battles? This show is good for that, but watch any other Gundam first. Seriously, unless you are Gundam starved do not watch this show.
