Gaikotsu Kishi-sama, Tadaima Isekai e Odekakechuu

After falling asleep while playing an online game, a man wakes up and finds himself transported to that game's world as his in-game character, Arc. He wastes no time adjusting to his new environment, but soon realizes that he is using the skeleton avatar he chose when creating his character, which forces him to hide his visage to avoid unwanted attention.

Arc goes to the nearby castle town of Luvierte, hoping to become an adventurer and take on quests to earn money. With his overpowered abilities, Arc embarks on a fantastical journey—exploring diverse territories, looting various monsters, and helping people get out of sticky situations. However, his seemingly innocuous actions may soon involve him in a brewing large-scale conflict that will forever alter the fate of the realm.

tl;dr: An anime with a really fun pair of main characters that are easy to root for, but with not enough going on beyond that.

This anime is about Arc, a guy that suddenly wakes up as an overpowered version of his MMO avatar. Yes, it’s not enough to just wake up as a powerful MMO character, but rather he wakes up with skills beyond what his MMO avatar was cable of. The catch is that his MMO avatar was a skeleton, which humans generally consider enemies. He wears full plate armor that covers everything so it’s not that hard to hide this, but the threat ... of discovery continues to exist. As such, he plans to live a quiet inconspicuous life despite how powerful he is. However, when he encounters an elf named Ariane he finds a cause worthy of standing out, freeing her enslaved brethren.

For the most part this anime flows a lot like the typical OP protagonist anime. It’s heavily centered around building up to moments where Arc is OP and saves the day. There are a couple things that help it stand out though. The first is that Arc and the main heroine Ariane are both great characters. Arc himself is incredibly simple, in that he’s just a hero being heroic for heroism’s sake without any sort of overarching goal or purpose. However, he does that in such a jolly and unapologetic manner that he is a lot of fun to watch. Also, while most OP isekai protagonists seems to lean towards the sin of lust with harems and all that, Arc’s vice is definitely gluttony in that he’s all about the food life, which is amusing seeing as he’s just a pile of bones that is for unexplained reasons able to eat and drink.

Ariane has the goal of saving her fellow elves from slave traders, which is easy to empathize and root for. She’s a very cool character as well, which contrasts really well with Arc being a dork so they play well off each other. She’s an elf that distrusts humans due to how they’ve wronged elves, but comes around to trusting Arc, and shows signs of being romantically interested in him. He’s dense as a brick though and doesn’t notice. In romance anime this can be frustrating as it’s hindering progression, but when it’s just a minor plot thread like in this anime I find it really funny. Also, she has a fantastic design that the anime uses really well.

The second thing that makes this anime stand out is the larger implications of the overpowered acts. As far as Arc is concerned, he’s just helping people. There are no larger implications to what he’s doing. Thus, the story from his perspective has a very simple black and white morality that makes it easy for the viewer to get invested in and to find the results of his actions satisfying. However, unbeknownst to him, there’s political intrigue happening in the background with three siblings fighting over a throne and two foreign nations backing different princes. Arcs actions have major effects on how this is playing out, which is both amusing and quite interesting. The added complexity here compliments the simplicity of Arcs journey quite well without getting in the way of it, which results in a pretty unique and interesting feel to the anime. I’m also very interested in how things will proceed once these lines fully cross.

With that said, the anime definitely has some major weaknesses. For one, there are no characters other than Arc and Ariane that were handled even remotely well. They’re all incredibly flat without anything interesting about them whatsoever. Arc and Ariane are great, but not enough to hold up the show completely on their own. Second, while Arc being overpowered is focused on quite a bit, the anime is not all that great at actually making Arc seem overpowered. He’s generally very slow to act, and even when he does act he takes a long time before actually doing anything overpowered for some reason. And in that gap things often go wrong in one way or another, or other characters end up helping him out, which kind of diminishes things. Thirdly, while the world building with the politics in the human kingdom and their relationship with the elves is interesting, it feels kind of half assed a lot of the time. I suppose this’ll be fleshed out better as it comes more into the focus, but as of now it felt really undeveloped.

The art and animation in the anime are pretty good. It uses CGI for the main characters quite a lot, but it worked a lot better than in most anime that do the same. The use of the visual motif of Arc with one glowing eye was really interesting and resembled Goblin Slayer a lot. Beyond that, I felt his character designs was somewhat boring. Ariane had an amazing design as mentioned, but she seems to be the only one as everyone else’s was pretty lacking. The OP was pretty interesting in that it was more like a montage with background music than an OP, but it worked well enough I suppose. The ED was more like a traditional ED but was only okay in terms of song and visuals. The ED’s visuals leaned on not so good CGI too much. The soundtrack was decent but not particularly memorable.

Mixed Feelings

This series is nothing special. I mean that in the most positive way possible. It does nothing to differentiate it from other isekai that have been created and continue to be created. The basic premise is similar to Log Horizon in that the MC wakes up in his game world, but instead of trying to get out or return to reality he simply rolls with it. The idea here is that MC does not really care about going home and instead wants to explore this new world and have an easy life while doing it.

Characterwise, this show is extremely adequate to lackluster. The main cast ... is ok but quite small compared to other rosters. With only Arc (the MC) and Ariane (Main Female Lead) to carry the vast majority of this show as it is now, there is little in the way of chemistry or banter that elevates it to higher levels within the isekai genre. While a third character, Chiyome (the ninja) joins later in the series, the problem is too little too late as her addition to the cast does little to nothing to expand the chemistry and writing within the show. If anything Chiyome and Ariane go back and forth being the same character which is disappointing for a show that already lacks any significant cast.
As a sidenote to the characters, the villains/antagonists of this show are easily the worst I have seen in a while. Most are introduced using poor tactics such as rape and slaughter in order to make the audience hate them but are neither a threat of any significance to the protags or used long enough to warrant ever being treated seriously. So in a show where the main cast is small and forgettable you have a villain cast that sucks and has no depth or level of seriousness to them. Great.

This show is boring for those who want anything serious or even competent. It exists as another isekai that is mediocre enough to be enjoyed in the moment if you have nothing to watch, but is easily forgotten as soon as the outro plays.

I think that many of us have seen this story before and we may also know what this series can be based on, it is nothing innovative to see a person reincarnate in their favorite video game, we have seen it before and it is a genre that can be said to be A point of being exploited by low quality series is coming, this is not the exception, it is not a bad series, don't get me wrong, I think that if you have not seen this genre before you will really like this first taste, but yes You already have a background, you ... are going to see this series as a mediocre series that does not innovate at all and is not very entertaining, as it is in my case, I could make this review simpler by saying that it is just a mediocre series of the bunch and that's how it is, I would recommend it... maybe, but only if you haven't seen series of the genre, but don't waste your time, there are many better and more interesting options.

Creo que ya muchos hemos visto está historia antes y puede que también sepamos en que se puede basar está serie, no es nada innovador el ver a una persona reencarnar en su videojuego favorito ya lo hemos visto antes y es un genero que se puede decir que esta llegando un punto de estar explotado de series con baja calidad, está no es la excepción, no es una mala serie, no me mal entiendan, creo que si no has visto este genero antes te va a gustar muchísimo esta primera probada, pero si ya tienes un antecedente vas a ver está serie como una serie mediocre que no innova en nada y no es muy entretenida, como lo es en mi caso, podría hacer mas simple está reseña diciendo que es solo una serie mediocre del montón y así es, la recomendaría… puede que si pero solo si no has visto series del genero sino no pierdas el tiempo hay muchas mejores opciones y mas interesantes.
