Synopsis

After surviving the brutal challenges of Idofront, Riko now possesses a White Whistle, allowing her to descend into the Abyss's sixth layer—The Capital of the Unreturned. Alongside Reg and Nanachi, Riko begins to explore the uncharted domain, where the ruins of the promised Golden City are located.

As the trio starts to adapt to the harsh environment, they soon encounter dangerous creatures and treacherous landscapes. Their expedition leads them to a village inhabited by strange beings known as "hollows." Despite the creeping sense of unease that welcomes them, the three venture onward to uncover the mysteries of the settlement and long-lost legacies of the forgotten adventurers who once descended into the horrors of the unexplored Abyss.

[THE FOLLOWING REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR MADE IN ABYSS SEASONS 1, 2 AND DAWN OF THE DEEP SOUL YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED]
Made in Abyss was a series that exuded great potential from the moment it began. It hinted at a refreshingly original and unique setting that was not burdened by the conventions of traditional fantasy worlds. It was very easy to get drawn into the early chapters from the sheer ambition of its premise. Though the longer it went on the more abundantly clear it was that this series was nothing more than a wasted concept. Any potential this story previously had has been ... completely squandered by mediocre worldbuilding, haphazard writing, one dimensional characters and egregious emotionally manipulative tropes. The Narahate Village/The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Arc is where this series completely fell apart for me in both the manga and anime.

You may have seen Made in Abyss flaunted around by its fans for how strongly it establishes its setting but truthfully, its worldbuilding was mediocre from the very beginning. The danger and atmosphere are set up well enough with compelling art direction and scenery but it doesn't bother actually exploring any of it. The series totally broombrushed through the entire first 5 layers. We quickly descended through the early layers hardly learning any substantial details about them which completely undermined what made the premise so intriguing in the first place. Naturally the stories pacing would slow down drastically considering there are only few more known layers left but this arc just grinds the story to a halt. The issue is that it barely moves forward the actual plot and sidelines the group's initial goal. Riko mentions her mother maybe twice the entire arc. At the very least we get a bit of info on Reg's potential origin and why he ascended but its not enough to warrant how much the story slows down. So the actual exploration takes a backseat to character relations and more flashbacks. The main problem being that Made in Abyss' character writing has always been one of its worst aspects.

The two main leads are not particularly endearing or interesting mostly just serving as eyes for the audience. Riko is an average naïve and cheerful child protagonist. Reg is a typical amnesiac character with so little known about him even up to this point, its hard to care about him at all. So the two main characters are the least interesting within their own story and lack any development or growth which is certainly a bad sign. Though there is one character whom I managed to find interesting, that being Nanachi. They are the only character in the main trio who has an established backstory, distinct personality and actual character growth that they go through during the 4th layer's arc. They manage to help the group in ways that feel natural and not like they're just some plot device. So there's at the very least one compelling character within the main trio. That's at least something right? The problem lies in the fact that Nanachi's character arc had basically been completely resolved in the first season and the Dawn of the Deep Soul movie. I felt they had no real role in the remaining story and dreaded how they would be handled in this newest arc. Unfortunately exactly what I feared would happen happened, less than half way through this arc her character evolution is completely destroyed.

There are a lot of jarring story decisions the author made during the entirety of this arc. One of the most egregious being the decision to tactlessly bring Mitty back, destroying any sense of tragedy her arc had. Fans have defended this by saying she is a just soulless imitation created by Belaf when that clearly is not the case. Belaf himself described it as a perfect (right down to the soul) copy of Mitty that he sacrificed various parts of his body for. Nanachi had so little of a role in the middle of the story the author brought back Mitty just to immobilize her with little regard for how it completely undermined the permanency and emotional impact of their real death. This is what I meant when I said her character evolution was destroyed. Nanachi was just given the exact same arc as she had in the first season by bringing Mitty back into the story and killing them again arbitrarily for the sake of cheap unearned sentiments. The initial death of Mitty with Reg and Nanachi saying goodbye has lost all of its meaning since just they decided to do an emotionally blunt rehash of the exact same scene. It does not further characterize Nanachi in any way and only exists for them to be dormant during the middle of the arc. It shows the author can only write conflict for Nanachi if Mitty is somehow involved which just makes her such a stale character at this point.

There are so many other things I can complain about but my main issue is just how cheap its "emotional payoffs" always are. To put it bluntly Made in Abyss is, and always has been, blatantly emotionally manipulative. Emotional manipulation can be described as a story taking a cheap shortcut to emotion has hasn't been earned by the narrative. Let me ask you something. Did you care about Prushka, Mitty or Irumyuui because they were well-fleshed out rounded characters that you gradually grew to like over the course of the show? Of course not! They are barely characters. You care because the show uses gratuitous violence to elicit a response through the cheapest shock factor imaginable. Rather than properly building up a character in a natural way over the course of a story so that the audience can actually grow to be emotionally connected with them, they lean on basic human empathy to elicit emotion rather than developing an an actual interesting character. If you don't view introducing a character last minute then expecting you to care about them by subjecting them to gratuitous violence as anything other than manipulative I don't know what to tell you. The main issue lies in just how thin the character writing is. I was willing to give Mitty's death a pass because even though I had little reason to care about Mitty as a character she served as leverage for Nanachi's backstory and established their motivations but that's been completely ruined now. Prushka was an infinitely worse retread of the same arc. It was definitely worse with her considering how little screen time she received and her lack of any believable chemistry with Riko. Then we arrive to Vueko and Irumyuui which is the worst iteration of this by far. We are now subjected to gruesome flashbacks for a character we didn't even know existed outside of their brief appearances in the first episode. She's an even more out of left field and rushed character than both Prushka and Mitty.

It keeps playing the same cards over and over. We have been presented the exact same manipulative narrative arc three fucking times in row. With the only difference being escalation to the point of being so comically fucked up its impossible for me to take seriously anymore. The displays of violence in the last two episodes are just so juvenile. Faputa is a one dimensional character driven by revenge and the fact they try to redeem her and tease them joining the group after they genocide the entire village is just asinine. Some may still see potential in the future of this series but I see it as nothing more than tarnished potential.

The kid gloves are off. Although some people still do, we can’t pretend this is the happy go lucky journey down the Abyss that we thought this show was going to be back when Season 1 aired all the way back in 2017. One thing that hasn’t changed since then is my undeniable intrigue I have with this series. The adventuring, the stunning scenery, the immaculate OST, the characters, basically everything resonated with me, and with this season of Made In Abyss, that was no different.

In my eyes, Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou is a pure masterpiece and something that has won my heart. Honestly, I would not mind ending my review after that, because this anime needs no introduction and I do not even need to write 2,000+ words about nothing only to show you how beautiful Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou is. No, this anime is not about breathtaking landscapes, music, or great animation. On top of that, it is not an anime about children’s sufferings. Unlike the 1st season, Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou ... is a long journey. A journey not only for the anime’s protagonists, but also for the viewer, because you will literally drown in the sequence of the events, never-ending twists and everything that will just keep you in a never-ending state of distress.

Maybe you might remember how the first season started. Life looked, although a little unusual, it was quite normal. Yes, it was not easy, but, at the same time, it was predictable. It flowed evenly without unnecessary distortions. But then comes a turning point, the call of the abyss, and our heroes begin their descent. The deeper they go, the more happens to them, the more difficulties and sufferings they face. The higher the stakes, the higher is the reward. However, will this reward be a blessing, or a curse? No one knows. It is your journey and your journey alone. You, together with Nanachi, Reg and Riko, will find it out.

We are almost there. On one of the lower floors, we begin to see the true face of the abyss: the world unknown to many human eyes and minds, the world, in which hell and the fulfillment of any desire is a reality; a calm, peaceful and almost heaven like life are a part of a single whole. Many were ready to conquer it, the closer they were, the more the abyss tried to destroy their soul, just like the devil. There is no need to worry about monsters, because there is only one real enemy to beware of; the abyss, because the abyss gifts and blessings, which turn life into hell, are worse than death in the jaws of any monster.

Story aside, which perfectly depicts what discovering the new truly is, by that I mean the idea that some people might feel bad about what is depicted in this anime, because finding something new, where humans have never been to, where monsters will devour you the moment you are inattentive, where you know nothing about the people, their customs, the language, the food, possible illnesses you might get, you know nothing; it is a bet and the best case scenario is that you will be crippled for the rest of your life, or you will just die without a single trace. This is what discovering something new truly means, it is like a drug for some: you want to see more, to be where no one has ever been to and you will never get rid of it. This is what the anime perfectly, absolutely no question about it, depicts. Amazing writing and world building that make you feel yourself like a member of the team, travelling in the deepest parts of the abyss, to find the Golden City.

Indeed, I can praise the story more and more and I would love to say more, but this is not my journey. It is yours and you, if you are ready to be attentive for 12 episodes, will never forget that experience. But let us talk about the characters. What I love Made in Abyss for is that in its new season it not only introduces a number of the new characters, it also does not forget about the protagonists from the 1st season. Made in Abyss gives the viewer a chance to find out more about Nanachi, Reg and Riko and to find more about those, who wanted to conquer the abyss. Some of the new characters will be loved, some will be hated, but there is no character that is boring and badly written. It is an open secret and an absolutely obvious fact for the viewers that every character is written and made with a huge care and this care is not possible to miss; the anime’s staff made a superb job.

There is no need to say that, because it has little to no importance and contribution to the brilliance of the said anime title, but think of it as a small bonus; animation wise, the anime has perhaps the most unique animation style I have ever seen in my life. Never before have I seen the combination of both cute and, at the same moment, super terrifying animation style, because the animation made me terrified for the trio of protagonists and it is nothing but a proof that it did its job perfectly well. Because of the animation, watching the anime on a big screen simply makes you charmed by the beauty of the world of Made in Abyss. I am just speechless.

It is still not enough for this anime, because I can write a whole book only to share my feelings about this anime and I would not mind it at all, but I will not do that. Not just because of spoilers, but because of one single fact: I want you, the person reading this review, to set off on a journey in the deepest parts of the abyss and to discover its charming beauty all by yourself. I am not going to give you all the answers, nor am I going to analyze anything for you. You are to be the explorer, you are to make the choices, you are to try to guess the true meaning and the author’s message behind this anime. Will you manage? I do not know. But you sure are not a coward. Ready for a challenge? There is no time to waste, start watching Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou today.
