Kanojo, Okarishimasu

Kazuya Kinoshita is a 20-year-old college student who has a wonderful girlfriend: the bright and sunny Mami Nanami. But suddenly, he doesn't. Without warning, Mami breaks up with him, leaving him utterly heartbroken and lonely. Seeking to soothe the pain, he hires a rental girlfriend through an online app. His partner is Chizuru Mizuhara, who through her unparalleled beauty and cute demeanor, manages to gain Kazuya's affection.

But after reading similar experiences other customers had had with Chizuru, Kazuya believes her warm smile and caring personality were all just an act to toy with his heart, and he rates her poorly. Aggravated, Chizuru lambastes him for his shameless hypocrisy, revealing her true pert and hot-tempered self. This one-sided exchange is cut short, however, when Kazuya finds out that his grandmother has collapsed.

They dash toward the hospital and find Kazuya's grandmother already in good condition. Baffled by Chizuru's presence, she asks who this girl might be. On impulse, Kazuya promptly declares that they are lovers, forcing Chizuru to play the part. But with Kazuya still hung up on his previous relationship with Mami, how long can this difficult client and reluctant rental girlfriend keep up their act?

HEAR ME OUT I know i should not like this, The MC is one of the worst to date, the writing is pretty shit and most of the other characters are just down right stupid. But I was soo hooked. This show didn't let me go, i found myself watching multiple episodes at a time until i realized i was at the last

Art - 10/10 The Animation is actually phenomenal, Expressions of characters are exaggerated but it actually improves on the comedic values of the show.

Characters 5/10 Some real hit or miss characters, Many of the characters dont act as humans normally would. Especially the ... Main character, Mami and Ruki. But the characters are saved by Chizuru mainly.

Story- 6/10 There is not much of a story but the idea of a show talking about the "Rental Girlfriends" Which are an actual thing (I had no idea) is kind of cool, and its nice to see characters sort of self aware that it may not be a job for the future but its something that actually may help people out

Enjoyment 7/10 I enjoyed this way too much, I Found it pretty funny and the animation kept my eyes glued to the screen for pretty much the entire season.

OVerall- 7/10

Mixed Feelings

This one's a bit of a headscratcher. I was discussing the anti-popularity of the series with my girlfriend and we couldn't come up with a solid reason why 'Rent-a-Girlfriend' gets SO MUCH flak.

Don't get me wrong - it's a flawed and rather generic series. The characters are meh, the visuals are great, and the premise is just alright with its edginess. 'Rent-a-Girlfriend' can be summarized as a gorgeously animated rom-com with a shitload of clichés, chronically dumb characters, and rather cheap drama.

That applies to so many other series, though. And by some law of contradictions, it's exactly these hilariously bad aspects that make the series ... somewhat enjoyable. Yeah, it could be way better if the story/characters were better too. And yeah, I've heard about the non-existent plot progression; I sure as hell won't be devoting the time to read a 200+ chapter manga for what 'Rent-a-Girlfriend' constitutes.

However, as far as Season 1 goes, this dumpster fire was pretty decent. It has its awkward moments, its outright cringe episodes, and young people with raging hormones making hilariously shit (and sometimes unethical) decisions. Life's like this when you're a college freshman (and not only) sometimes.

I dunno. I guess the MC being a total wimp didn't phase us that much, I guess? In a way, he's more interesting than Self-Insert #N+1 you'd see in most rom-coms. The same applies to Mami being a bitch, Ruka being a pushy brat with a 'convenient' plot device justifying her obnoxiousness and Chizuru being, dunno, a semi-augmented Mary Sue I guess? All of these are generic approaches to plot building/character shaping but they weren't that atrocious.

If anything, the most irritable character is the grandma who is as toxic as a family member can get.

In any case, the first season of 'Rent-a-Girlfriend' was a solid 5.5 to 6/10. Perfect for whenever you have some downtime or want to watch something that doesn't involve a lot of thinking. I can't help but feel that quite a bit of the 'anti' reactions are slightly knee-jerky in nature.

Kanojo Okarishimasu is a complete waste of time, especially considering the current state of the manga. The protagonist starts off as unlikable, and unfortunately, there's little to no character development to redeem him (idc that the mc is bad, but make him evolve like fr). While I initially found the girls to be kinda interesting, they too suffer from lack of growth and ultimately become tedious and uninteresting.

The plot, if you can call it that, descends into utter shambles, with no semblance of progression or improvement. It's frustrating to see mangakas start with a promising idea only to become infatuated with their characters, refusing to ... let anything truly impactful happen to them. Real character growth requires facing challenges and overcoming obstacles, but this manga seems content to keep its characters stagnant.

It's a shame because there are moments of potential progress, only to be squandered as the story regresses back to its uninspired state. It's clear that the author prioritizes protecting their characters over crafting a compelling narrative.

In summary, Kanojo Okarishimasu is a prime example of wasted potential. Instead of delivering a captivating story, it falls victim to its own reluctance to take risks and push its characters to grow. Save yourself the frustration and invest your time elsewhere.
