Current focus: more manga than anime. I'm also reviewing less-known series that seem interesting.
Initially watched anime from 2007-2009, then 2013-2015.
For some reason living in Japan (2015~) made me watch/read less (3-4 series only over the years spent there). Guess I was too busy IRL! I left Japan last year. Been catching up on series ever since.
I got into josei manga thanks to some of my SO's recommendations. Since then, I lean Josei > Seinen > Shoujo > Shounen in terms of overall enjoyment.
I rate works based on how they compare to other works in the respective genre.
My top 5 short manga series:
1) Usemono Yado
'The Inn of Lost Things' is a melancholic, episodic-turned-into-linear exploration of human regrets (and desires).
2) Shiosai no Majo
Somewhat similar in its episodic nature and focus on melancholy, this one ventures into the realm of myths and fables. Characters come to visit and are served a meal related to their worries and anxieties. Nostalgic and soothing in an introspective way.
3) Haru no Noroi
This one's heavier and more traumatic, an exploration of inter-family dynamics and love. An extremely short read, it's a condensed punch in the gut.
4) Shiki no Zenjitsu
Same author as 'Usemono Yado' and as short as my #3 recommendation. These short-form stories have a twist to their brisk plot and explore anything from devotion to sorrow. Some duller moments, but an overall great look into the rich world of human emotions.
5) Natsu no Zenjitsu
Artsy and dramatic, tumultuous, torrential. These would be the keywords for this seinen with some josei undertones sprinkled in. If you're looking for an intense love drama that doesn't shy away from nudity and being explicit, this is it. The author's ongoing series, 'Kannou Sensei', is also fantastic.
